I recommend finding a medical herbalist if you don't want anti depressants. They are fully trained and give really good advice. Mine took a full medical history and made up a herbal prescription that took into account not just my mentally health but also other issues I had like IBS. I couldn't take the tablets the doctor gave me because of the side effects and the herbal medicine worked better.

The problem with buying over the counter herbal stuff like St Johns Wort is that it can have as many interactions with other things as prescribed medicine but they don't put that on the label.

Depends what the cause is of your depression and how deep it is. I had low mood (rather than full depression) for about 6 months. Turns out I was anemic and Vit D deficient. It is worth asking your GP for a full bloods work up and taking it from there. There is no reason to take multi vitamins unless you are deficient in something, but it would be worth checking out properly as it could be thyroid or other things.

However, I would say that there are some things where medication is the right thing to do. So discuss with your GP and take it from there.

Heights vitamins and probiotics. Amazing!

If you don't want medication, I'd recommend focussing on exercise, healthy diet, and maybe some counselling.

I agree with this. Along with vitamins, Getting out for a daily walk really helps with mental well-being. There have been studies to show how walking and exercise can help with depression, anxiety and stress.

Make sure your home environment is clean and comfortable too.

That started off looking as a miracle drug to me as it could help with a lot of my symptoms, then I saw i couldn't take it as I have autoimmune conditions. Does anyone know of anything similar?

If you go out in the sun for 20 min - 1hr with good exposure (don't burn!) you will make more vit D than a supplement, at the moment (need supplements in winter).

Vit D is part of the thyroid pathway, so if your levels are too low, one of the symptoms will be tiredness and depression.

Nothing works as a magic if you don't decide to control what thoughts you allow to entertain.

Hawkins0001 · 26/07/2023 11:58

Usually multi vitamins, then vitamin b complex
Then cod liver oil/fish oil ones

As for brands you want to go for the best you can afford, Terra Nova and higher nature.

For magnesium supplements, a chelated supplement is more effective than an oxide as it’s better absorbed.

A multivitamin is ok but be aware that some vitamins will affect the absorption of others (in good and bad ways).

You can’t go wrong with a vitamin D supplement, liquid iron if you’re menstruating, B12 and omega 3.

I also agree that good nutrition and exercise are way more important that supplements. Also talking therapy if it’s available to you.

Making a note of magnesium.

Are gummies suitable for vegetarians? I’ve always swerved them.

Yes the ones I mentioned before are vegetarian. I’m vegetarian.

Rummikub · 27/07/2023 13:22
