Anyone who hates the winter thread

Is anyone like me and dreads the winter months? The dark nights, the cold, the rain, the snow and generally the pure drudgery of the winter months? I get no joy from crisp leaves, twinkly lights, hot chocolate or having to wear layers to keep the cold out.

I was diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder in 2016. I don’t take anti depressants but do use a light lamp.

Does anyone want to keep me company? I’m probably in a minority but I love wearing flip flops, light clothing, being in the garden and the long days of summer. I count down the days until the winter solstice when the days start getting longer..

I loathe winter!! Love the summery days, the flip flops, the light dresses.
I do like Christmas so that’s good and keeps me going through Nov and Dec. But after Xmas is the pits

Yes! Jan through to March / mid April is absolutely the worst. 😩

I love autumn but I hate winter. I love the light too much. Cold, dry, crisp days with bright sunshine are where I'm comfortable but the minute those grey skies set in I immediately feel deflated and flat.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/08/2022 12:21

I don't like winter. Cold, dark, dismal mornings

HilarityEnsues · 28/08/2022 12:25

I don't think I hate it as much as some on this thread, but I always prefer Spring, Summer and half of Autumn. I just don't get why cold, damp, shivery conditions could ever be nice? Perhaps it's because we don't have snow so there's no prettiness around our winter.

That said, this year I am going to try to enjoy winter. One of my children is traveling over that time so it will be different, there's just two of us at home (another child) so I want to make it special for that one. I am not a massive fan of Christmassy things and tend to avoid them but this year I'm going to go to them all if I can and see how I feel!

One of my daughters uses a light box and it helped a lot with seasonal depression.

LindaEllen · 28/08/2022 12:30

I've always been a bit low in the winter (makes sense psychologically - we love light and there's not much of it!) but 8 years ago something happened mid September that made life very difficult and unpleasant for quite a few months afterwards (and things were never completely the same even when things calmed down).

Now, as soon as I can sense autumn in the air, I can feel the gnaw of anxiety because it just reminds me of 'that' time. It's horrible. I absolutely dread winter now.

And yes I've spoken to someone and I'm on ADs which have helped, but even so.

Leafy3 · 28/08/2022 13:38

@LindaEllen I know exactly what you mean, I had the same. I used to love autumn but I'm never able to enjoy it now.

This has been the longest, worst winter ever. Today, the onset of more bloomin' grey made me crash and I went to bed at 3pm.

I was the same. Got the dog out for a walk (still in my winter coat, and I even needed gloves) then went back to

bed. It's so bleak, and there doesn't seem to be any let up in sight. Sad

EyeC · 23/04/2023 20:21

Yep!

Completely agree this grey wet weather and chilly seems to be going on forever it is destroying me I am getting soaked every time I leave the house it is so depressing

JustlookingNotbuying · 24/04/2023 07:59

We just don’t seem to have any nice spring weather anymore. I remember lovely sunny springs when I was younger. It’s like we have a constant grey blanket pulled over the U.K. most of the time.

userxx · 24/04/2023 08:02

The sun is out here, pretty sure the rain will hit later but for now its lovely.

lyingonthebeach · 08/05/2023 15:11

It's May. And still that ghastly grey and damp! I really feel as if I am sinking........ how much longer is this going to last? None of my coping strategies are working and I feel depressed and angry most of the time.

Yesterday was a bit of a lift with some blue sky but today is back to the soul sapping dreich.

Think I'll go to bed now and try to ignore it.

megletthesecond · 08/05/2023 15:57

I've been very irritable too lying.
I forced myself to go for a run earlier just so I could be inside and warm all afternoon.
This weather is taking the piss.

lyingonthebeach · 04/06/2023 16:40

I have moaned here - and felt better for it- but I just want to say that we have sunshine and blue sky today. And I feel like a different person :)

I hope you all feel better too, Let's make the most of..................................

Was just thinking how good I feel for spending the afternoon quietly in the sun!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/06/2023 17:54

Spent the afternoon soaking up the sun like a lizard on a rock. This is more like it!

Vicliz24 · 04/06/2023 18:14

Absolutely it is !!!! I hate winter with a vengeance. This can continue till Christmas for me .

JustMeBeingMe2022 · 04/06/2023 23:26

I lay in the sun and enjoyed every second of it. The summer haters will be closing the curtains and fretting for winter to come back no doubt.

Me too. I'm already scared about next winter and how it will make me - and my adult children - feel. Last winter was bad and went on for ages, I felt very low and can't beat the thought of going through it again.

SoupDragon · 05/06/2023 07:53

It's not just the warmth, it's the lovely light evenings as well.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/06/2023 08:50

Turned cold again where I am. I'm in a vest, cashmere jumper and a fleecy hoody to walk the dog, and I'm still a bit chilly.

SoniyaJonas · 06/06/2023 09:57

You're not alone in disliking the winter months and experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), but there are also others who share your love for summer, flip flops, light clothing, and the longer days, and they can offer companionship and understanding.

lyingonthebeach · 06/06/2023 18:00

Definitely! The Summer Lovers Supporters Club :) When I was really struggling with the cold and the grey, being here for a rant and knowing I was not alone made a massive difference. Sending warm wishes. x
