Emetophobia - terrified of this sickness bug

nellyraggbagg · 03/01/2008 22:21

This sounds so stupid, but I'm completely terrified of the children (not to mention DH and me) catching this Norovirus that's doing the rounds. I've been emetophobic for as long as I can remember, and it has become even worse since having children. Every time they open their mouths, I'm terrified they're going to say they feel sick. When I go to bed at night, my last waking thought is: "Oh my God, what if they're sick in the night?" My DH is working away a lot at the moment, which makes matters even worse (he is good at dealing with sick, thank goodness!!) I have dealt with both children being sick (I have found that manic cleaning helps very slightly to take my mind off the blind panic), but am rigid with fear following newspaper reports of this current bug. How will I pick DS up from school if DD and/or I get it? My Mum is miles away, unfortunately. And what if DH gets it? I don't know how I'd cope if he were sick. Please, please help, someone - even if just by saying that I'm not the only person who feels like this!

Hi ladies, Hope you're all ok. DS had another 'V' bug last week, and I remained calm throughout and nobody else caught it. Can someone please reassure me that they will get fewer bugs once they are older? cos at the moment I feel like we are getting one after the other.

Anyway, my new mantra is "the reality is never as bad as the expectation" I keep telling myself that and it seems to be true

Dottoressa · 24/06/2008 12:46

AD - how do you do it? Please send some calm vibes my way!!
Well done, you...

wiggleit · 24/06/2008 13:16

Upsydaisy1 · 27/06/2008 12:40

Hello, you will probably remember me as Funnybunny - have changed my name!

I do keep checking this thread from time to time to see how you are all doing. And it does give me such comfort to know that I am not alone.

Most of the time I manage ok. My DC1 had a sickness bug 7 days ago and I managed really well. However my other DC was sick last night and now I feel like a quivering wreck. I can't eat, can't sleep, can think about anything else expect that this is some dreadful bug that we are all going to succumb to.

Is there anyone there to put this into perspective please - before I go crazy with anxiety. What is the liklihood of my dc2 catching this off dc1 and harbouring it for 7 days - does this mean we are all in for it???

Dottoressa · 27/06/2008 16:23

Funny - you poor, poor thing. I would be the same in your shoes, but all I can say is that I'm as sure as I can be that you can't harbour a tummy bug for that long. It would seem to be very, very unfortunate coincidence - but how horrible for you all the same.

Let us know how you get on. Keep washing your hands!!

Upsydaisy1 · 27/06/2008 22:54

Hi BB, dc1's last puking session was last Thursday night at 10.00pm and dc2 was sick from 6.00pm last night to 10.00pm but was absolutely right as rain this morning. If I'd let him he would have eaten the entire contents of the fridge.

Oh, BB... I do feel for you. You are a better woman than I am - I don't think I'd dare go back tomorrow. When do you break up? My DS breaks up on Tuesday, so I am hoping to avoid school bugs until then!!

Good luck tomorrow, and hugs from up north. xx

wiggleit · 01/07/2008 12:25

OMG bb!! How are you holding it together? You are so so fab and brave. The treatment you are having is obviously working well.

There is an awful bug going around, a couple of my friends have had it. Just praying that DD doesn't succumb! Don't know what i will do. (I'll have to leave home!) (not kidding either!)

My DD doesn't break up til the 18th.

Hi Dot! Hi funny (upsy) ..you've been missed! Hey Notalone, where are you buddy? You haven't been on here for a while. We will arrange our meet up in a couple of weeks if that suits you chick. Miss you!

Hi to everyone else! xxxxx

mumtoo3 · 01/07/2008 14:40

hi all

bb - thats awful fingers crossed you avoid it keep us updated x

i thought all the tummy bugs were settling down for the summer, do us emets ever get a break!!!

hope everyone else is well,

Dottoressa · 02/07/2008 17:02

BB - how are you doing?? Hope you're okay, and staying strong...

DD has a nasty poo today, so I am now in anxiety-mode! She has been a bit funny for the last few days (though DH thinks I'm imagining it. Humph). I am definitely worrying, whatever he says...

wiggleit · 02/07/2008 17:29

Hi Dot, i would be worrying too hun. How old is your DD? Mine's 7 and she's had the runs now on and off for the last few weeks...thinking maybe it's a food intolerance thing so atm we are keeping a diary of everything she eats and any symptoms she shows. Hope your DD ok.

bb - how's things with you oh very brave one! Hope you are ok hun xx

Hi to everyone else! xx

Notalone · 02/07/2008 18:31

Well I am back but wish I hadn't looked now. I had reassured myself it will be ok cos it is summer but it isn't at all is it?

Wiggleit - how are you? I gave blood today and as part of the screening I was asked if I had taken any meds in the past week. I had taken stemetil cos I felt ill Monday night and the nurse admitted she was an emet too. There are more of us than we think hey?! What bug is going around our way then? One of the women in my team was sick today and another was off today with sickness. The one who is off reckons it is from a dodgy bbq but I am wondering if that is too much of a co-incidence or not. How is your DD now? xx

BB - you are so very brave. The school sounds like a mare at the moment. How are you coping with it all?

How is everyone else. Dot - did you used to be someone else? Welcome back Upsydaisy! How are the rest of you?

Nelly!!! Where have you gone????

Dottoressa · 02/07/2008 22:41

Hello ladies,

Notalone - Yes, I was Nelly in my previous incarnation!!

Glad you're still lurking. How interesting that your nurse was an emet, too. I came across one in the school playground, which was slightly reassuring. She said that she threw away her children's clothes if they v-d on them, rather than having the v in the washing machine!! (She also said she didn't dare tell her DH this...!!)

I really don't know how anyone can even look at a bbq.

Wiggle - my DD was four last week. I've been watching her v closely for signs of illness for the past few days - she's been uncharacteristically grumpy, and then had this funny poo. But she did eat her tea, which is always a good sign (she says optimistically...)

Hello everyone else, and a big wave to brave BB!

Notalone · 03/07/2008 19:57

Thank goodness Dot - I wasn't sure and thought you may have upped and left us! Did your DD have a good birthday? Any more news on the holiday front? I can understand where your playground friend was coming from. I have done the same myself

wiggleit · 03/07/2008 21:46

Evening all!

Notalone! You're back! Hi babes. There is a sicky bug going round our way, a couple of my friends have had it, one was actually sick with it and the other just felt sick. The one that just felt sick was ill for 5days though!
well done for giving blood, i used to but it made me feel funny the last time i did it and also someone passed out so i haven't been since! Hope to meet up with you soon hun. xx miss you!

bb hows things with you? Don't even know how you managed to go to work after what happened! Hope all is ok.

Hi Dot, Hope your DD is ok. My DD very tearful tonight, still sobbing in bed now (She's left her fave teddy at her friends) She's inconsolable! Just hoping its not a sign that she's coming down with something!

Hi upsy! How's you?

wiggleit · 03/07/2008 22:01

As for the secret emets, there are a few out there aren't there? Funny about that nurse being an emet? However did she get into that profession?
My DH was telling one of his friends the other day a little bit about me and he said his daughter was exactly the same. It's a small world out there...half full of secret emets!
Tried to explain it to my mate the other day (the one who felt sick for 5 days) because we had 2 nights out planned and she was still wanting to go on them! No way could i risk that! She had no idea that i had this phobia and didn't really get it i don't think but at least now she knows for future reference. Felt embarrassed explaining it though.
As for the clothes thing...yep, done that! Would throw anything away with v on it! I bet we've all been guilty of that at some point.

Anyway, they were just some after thoughts i had after i'd typed earlier! I'll get off now and stop me whinging!
