Glad to see an update OP. Sorry to hear about the Section 2.
They will try different medications to see what works. Hopefully this first one will work for you. I have a friend who is on it, and he does not have schizophrenia.. he has psychotic depression. Medications treat a particular symptom rather than a particular diagnosis. I hope it helps with your symptoms and you begin to feel like yourself again soon.

HikeForward · 30/03/2021 21:03

Apripriprazol is not only used for schizophrenia, it’s a mild anti-psychotic used for many types of psychosis. It’s often the first one they try for a first episode of psychosis as it has the fewest side effects for most people.

Apripriprazole can be used for psychotic depression, bipolar mania, schizotypal personality disorder, mood disorders that cause intrusive thoughts and/or paranoia, drug-induced psychosis and psychosis when they’re unsure what’s causing it.

A diagnosis or schizophrenia is rarely made in 9 days. It tends to be considered when all other types of psychosis have been ruled out and they’ve observed you for a long period of time, usually in the community not just hospital. Often schizophrenic patients don’t respond to first line anti-psychotics so medications like clozapine are tried instead. Try not to jump to conclusions, they’ll tend you what the diagnosis is once and explain your treatment plan once you’ve come out of the psychosis.

Hope you feel better soon OP, thinking of you.

Good to hear from you op. You do sound more clear thinking today but these things take time so bear with it. We all understand what a disturbing time for you this is and wish you well. Am glad hikeforward has been on again and hope their information is reassuring. Sleep tight. Will be in touch again.

ismiseeire · 31/03/2021 04:21

Hi OP. How are you feeling now? Hope you are feeling a lot better and that the spiders and aliens are a thing of the past.
Is the food good in there? Can you buy yourself chocolate treats or crisps? I presume you can't have visitors because of Covid. Can the nurses do a 'treats' run for you?
Can you watch films on Netflix? I search for Family Films when I'm feeling a bit raw. I like to see happy things. That or comedies. Nothing that will upset you. Not worth it. Take all the meds they give you. Sleep is so so important. Try to eat fruit if they offer them at meals too.

ismiseeire · 31/03/2021 04:28

Something else you could do is try to start to follow the Soaps. I think Emmerdale is at 7pm every weeknight and Eastenders and Coronation street are on maybe 3 nights a week each. Or they used to be! If you have a communal TV, try to settle down to watch those. If you get into them, you'll start to look forward to watching them. I know that concentration span becomes that of a gnat with mental illness, but while you're doing well, it might be something to help you over the next few weeks.

MaitlandGirl · 31/03/2021 05:10

Abilify (one of the brand names of Apripriprazole) is what my wife takes for Bipolar ad Schitzoaffective disorder (basically schizophrenia but without the specific brain wave patterns - I think).

She like it and it suits her really well. The side effects are limited and it works.

Good luck and I hope things start to improve soon. It’s a scary time watching someone you love go through a mental health crisis so I can only imagine how scared and confused you must be.

Whereso · 31/03/2021 13:48

If (and it's a big if) you have schizophrenia it can be well controlled by the right medication. It wouldn't mean your life is over as you know it.

I have a family member with that diagnosis and she copes well in the community on medication, so please don't panic. You will be well looked after.

Roystonv · 01/04/2021 20:20

How are you doing today op? Hope things are going well for you. Sleep tight.

ismiseeire · 01/04/2021 20:37

Hi OP. Thinking of you.

Roystonv · 04/04/2021 14:34

Hope you are doing ok op. A happy Easter to you.

XenoBitch · 04/04/2021 18:18

Happy Easter OP. Did you get any easter eggs? Wards usually make an effort for these things. I hope you are getting a lot of rest.

DarlingWithoutYou · 04/04/2021 18:58

I take it for OCD, so don't panic that gets used for schizophrenia. Different doses are for different things.

Hope you're ok OP, come and update us soon.

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/04/2021 20:25

Hi OP. I just wanted to check in to let you know I’m thinking of you and hope things are getting a bit better.

Roystonv · 09/04/2021 21:07

I am still here too; I keep checking the thread. Do hope you are settling in now, getting help and feeling better.

Appleandmangojuice · 10/04/2021 14:49

Hi all

I want to say thank you so much everyone for continuing to check up on me, it honestly takes me back that so many women on mumsnet have been incredibly so kind to me. Flowers

I have posted twice of a update and unfortunately my post have been deleted by mumsnetHQ so not sure if I had said something I wasn't suppose to..

But without saying too much to risk my post being deleted again.. I am still in hospital - trying to talk lots to the nurse letting them no how I'm feeling..

My mums says I'm moving forward but sometimes it doesn't feel like that though..

I saw my 3 boys yesterday my youngest who turns 2 15th April is talking so much it fills my heart with so much joy.. I can go home for a few hours on his birthday and my birthday (16th april) I will be 28 and although I'd hope I wouldn't be here on my birthday it is something I can go home for a bit...

I'm being reminded that this process can take some times and may not help my situation and that we may need to try a different tablets...

The most important thing is my family, they have been incredible supportive and continue to reinsure me (and you ladies) that I am safe and I will get better..

I hope everyone is having a good day today.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 10/04/2021 17:53

You're doing great, OP.
Thanks for telling us about your experience. I have bad mental health issues myself but luckily have a psych.

Terrysmyorange · 10/04/2021 18:12

Hi OP you are entitled to an Independent mental health advocate (IMHA) they can are independent from the hospital and not part of the clinical team. They can really help support you at review meetings, asking for s17 leave which you are entitled to and ensuring the correct procedures are being followed and you are being listened to Thanks

Roystonv · 10/04/2021 20:19

Lovely to hear from you and so glad you have seen your family. Enjoy the birthdays. Your Mum is right that these things can't be rushed. You are doing so well so make use of everyone there to help you and keep going for your boys.
