Anxiety and Propanolol - I’m feeling nervous.

I’ve had a rough 18 months with my health which has now led to me having a diagnosis of anxiety.

I was prescribed Propanolol last week and I still haven’t mustered up the courage to take my first dose.

I’m anxious to take something that may help my anxiety. It’s nonsensical.

I guess I’m scared of side effects, or maybe I’m scared that it won’t make any difference.

Part of me is scared that I need medication for anxiety just to function normally.

Anyone else been in the same boat?

What made you take the leap and take that first tablet?

I was also worried about starting propranolol, but it’d absolutely fine, I take one 40mg per day and another if I feel I need it. Allowed max 3 per day.

Only side effect I get is feeing cold and I take it in the morning as it stops me sleeping if I take it at night.

Be brave! Take that first pill

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 18:23

Hi guys I am on 80mg and reading all your comments makes me think wow I must be really bad as I was on 40mg years ago and have just started 80mg yesterday and I can’t see at difference yet but I am also starting (two days in) on sertraline which are really hard going side effects so maybe that’s why the propranolol aren’t working at min but you should try take if ur first one it really isn’t a bad medicine to take no side effects for me anyway but I know people are different but go for it they did help me years ago 👍

Llh1979 · 08/01/2021 19:11

I started on sertraline before the propranolol and only lasted 2 days as this is what started my panic attacks in the 1st place I couldnt cope with the side effects
Good luck with it

Llh1979 · 08/01/2021 19:13

I'm allowed 2x40mg but only take 1 I split it in half so take some of a morning and some at night I find it takes the edge of the attacks but isnt making me feel better if that makes sense
I get really cold hands and feet since I've been taking it

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 19:15

Hi @Llh1979
I have read a lot how rough people get off sertraline but then how they get past it it’s amazing I’m in two minds to keep going but ppl say that most antidepressants give side effects , did u end up taking another brand ? If don’t mind me asking

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 19:17

@Llh1979
Propranolol defo only mask things a quick fix they good at the time but yes totally agree don’t fix the problem

Llh1979 · 08/01/2021 19:25

No I'm trying to stay away from antidepressants as I seem to be sensitive to them yet when I was on them 2.5 years ago because my mum was passing they worked wonders I felt sick for a couple of days starting them but that was all so really dont know why I reacted the way I did this time
I've got a feeling I'll have to try something different though

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 19:39

@Llh1979
Yea I’m not a fan but I surpose I was literally at rock bottom and just horrible to be around and physically always ill , yea they are hard to find a good one and it’s hard to keep going through side effects for nothing

Llh1979 · 08/01/2021 19:42

This is all making me physically ill 😢 the constant nausea and diarrhoea I've lost weight because I have no appetite which again the nausea cause panic attacks it's such a vicious circle
I had a good few days but was always sat thinking when will it all be back its such a vicious circle
Anxiety is no1s friend

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 20:07

@Llh1979
You are so right it’s defo a vicious circle and so hard to get out of , it’s just so draining , but it’s nice to have ppl on here and know we are all in same boat and there is light at end of tunnel even though it might seem far away , we can do this though , have u always suffered wiv it ?

Llh1979 · 08/01/2021 20:23

No I've never suffered before it all came out the blue after acute stress over a 2 week period I keep looking for a magic pill and know there isnt 1 but i dont know what else to do about it all
It's nice knowing others are in the same boat but then think why do we all have to suffer
I also think mental health is such a taboo subject but it effects more than we realise

Kir5tyTwiggy · 08/01/2021 20:47

Ohhhh I’m totally with u on the magic pill , and yes no one ever wants to know about mental health , ppl say u can talk to them but most ppl just get bored of u (not all ppl) and I totally understand it must be hard for the person listening to but to have mental health issues is so hard and something no1 ask’s for but we can do it sites like this are make me personally feel like I’m not alone and to just help each other and do u have family that can talk to

ThornAmongstRoses · 08/01/2021 23:26

I still haven’t taken my fist one Sad

I seem to come up with a new excuse everyday as to why not to take it. I always say, “I’ll take it tomorrow” but I never do.

I don’t know what I’m so afraid of.

Llh1979 · 09/01/2021 08:55

I can talk to my hubby and a couple of friends but that's it my siblings just tell me to get a grip and sort myself out as it's all in my mind and yes while it's all in my mind I cant seem to be able to control the thoughts
I'm starting a NHS panic course in about a month I'm hoping it helps

Llh1979 · 09/01/2021 08:56

Could you not try splitting the tablet and gradually build it up I promise its better than panic attacks

ThornAmongstRoses · 09/01/2021 10:24

I don’t have panic attacks - I just have times where I get anxious.

I’ve been on beta blockers before (which I think propranolol is a form of) so I’m not worried in that sense.

Maybe it’s psychological and I just don’t want to accept that I need medication for anxiety - it’s about society stigma possibly? Sad

Llh1979 · 09/01/2021 10:54

Mental health is such a taboo subject and it really shouldnt be as more people suffer with it in some form than anything
I've always suffered with anxiety but its normally very well controlled until this last bout which was caused by 2 weeks of acute stress I've now been ill with it for 6 weeks which I think is leading me to depression I really didnt want to go on an antidepressant but dont thinkni have much choice at the moment

Kir5tyTwiggy · 09/01/2021 11:22

Hi guys
I had my 3rd tablet last night of 25mg and took it at 7:30pm instead of 10:00pm and I have woke up much better today side effects are definitely better today going to take a propranolol as I have a bit of anxiety due to being asked to go out of house to meet a friend for a walk but I thought I wud just give a bit of positivity this morning so glad I feeling a bit better today though 👍 hope u guys have a better day

Llh1979 · 09/01/2021 12:29

Fab news I'm going to speak to my GP about a different antidepressant im not ashamed to take them I just want to be well again

GigantosaurusRex · 09/01/2021 13:13

I'm in day 4 of sertraline, at half dose but yo up to full dose tomorrow. I've had a few waves of nausea but otherwise I can't say I've noticed any difference as the anxiety was already pretty grim. If anything I feel relieved that I've bitten the bullet and started it.

Llh1979 · 09/01/2021 13:46

Good luck on your journey I'm going to ask the doctor for a different 1 as sertraline wasnt my friend this time but it worked great last time

avocadoinasidecar · 09/01/2021 13:51

@gamerchick

I can't see anything at all in them that would have a sedative effect either Hmm maybe your body is on such high alert, removing the adrenaline effect might help your body relax. But that's all.
It reduces your heart rate and can make you feel very tired.
Kir5tyTwiggy · 09/01/2021 15:43

It’s mad how different it makes ppl feel , but yes @Llh1979 go for it get a different antidepressant and hopefully it work better for u , u will never know if don’t try 👍😊 how are ppl’s day today ? I’ve got a bit of headache since been out , but Barr that I’m ok

ThornAmongstRoses · 16/01/2021 10:29

I’ve made the firm decision that I’m going to take my first tablet tonight Confused

How is everyone else??

My husband and I both take propanol for anxiety from time to time.
10mg is a low dose and it's a very safe medicine.
I think it just blocks the adrenaline a bit so you don't feel the physical effects of anxiety so much.
