Extended fasting, anyone?

I like to fast for 48-72 hours most weeks. Works well for me and then I minimise carbs the rest of the time (weekends not so much).

I'm almost at the end of my longest ever fast of 156hours (14 to go) and I've lost about 10lb. Based on my last long fast, I expect 3-4lb of that to go back on once I have refed but half a stone or so should be in the bin!

Curious if there's anyone else on here who's a faster?

Just ordered some electrolytes which I will use when I next have an extended fast
Thank you for the recommendation

MN is a discussion site, I'm as entitled to give my opinion on this thread as you are. Wind your neck in.

This is the Fasting Board!

We are not and cannot be responsible for people who may have eating disorders. If such discussions are distressing or harmful for them then it is their responsibility to avoid this very clearly labelled Board.

And I'm giving my opinion on fasting, HTH.

No roek wind YOUR neck in. You're being offensive, disrespectful and disruptive. All you're doing is making ill informed comments and derisive remarks.

Actually as someone whose ED was CAUSED by fasting diets I am my comments are informed. You might not like them, you might not agree with them, but they're not "ill informed". I didn't have a prior ED which meant a subsequent relapse when fasting, fasting literally caused my ED.

I work with those in ED recovery now and this is not an uncommon story, either.

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 16:27

What I have found, today, having had breakfast of porridge, banana,
Tsp coconut oil and a handful of nuts (and one of those instant coconut lattes at work - oops) is I felt quite shaky around 1130. That went away when I ate an orange and some almonds but I'm assuming it was caused by the after drop from sugar spike from the latte 🤷‍♀️

Almostalwayshappy · 19/04/2023 16:58

@RoeK

I'm very sorry to hear about the fact you lived with an ED and the fact you are now helping others is a testament to both your strength of character and passion about the subject. I completely understand your motivation in posting and your posts are now available to anyone who reads the thread. Your views have been heard. I have found great benefits in fasting (menopause and autoimmune problems) and will continue to do so. I don't feel this the right thread for debate as it is was started with the intention of supporting those who do want to fast and have done the research to make an informed decision about whether it's right for them. It might be worth starting a warning or debate thread yourself and leaving the rest of us to it.

How do you know that everyone who is fasting on the thread is making an informed decision. I have no doubt that someone with an eating disorder would do extensive research on such things but that doesn't mean they're not unwell.

My point throughout this thread is that you have no idea if you're supporting someone who is genuinely fasting for health reasons so someone who is very unwell.

This exactly.

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 17:14

I think you should contact MN and report all the diet threads rather than policing us

RoeK · 19/04/2023 17:17

I do report. I'm not going to stop posting on the thread, and you can't make me.

Almostalwayshappy · 19/04/2023 17:17

@RoeK @NerrSnerr I agree with you both - we can never know the MH status of anyone posting on an online forum and there is always a risk with this on this and many other MN threads. For your peace of mind, do report the thread to MN HQ - they are experienced in striking the right balance. I feel confortable continuing to post for advice.

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 17:19

Please stop. It's unnecessarily disruptive and it can't be doing you any good
I will try to just ignore and continue with the excellent support I've received here

RoeK · 19/04/2023 17:29

I'm fine, thank you, but I wasn't fine eight years ago when repeated 5 day fasts lead to me being hospitalised. If my comments make one person re think this "diet", then great.

muppamup · 19/04/2023 19:11

@RoeK Sorry to hear you had such awful issues. Sounds like you weren't the right person to try this method and it absolutely isn't for everyone.

On the other hand a lot of other people find it highly beneficial and manage it without ending up with serious health issues as a result. For many people who have tried every single diet going this is the one thing that does work for them.

I would say anyone thinking of trying it should research carefully, check out the communities, keep a careful watch on their health and mental health. It would be a shame if some people missed out on a potentially positively life changing thing because they were too scared to try it or research properly. But of course no-one should undertake it lightly.

I was enjoying this thread until now.

If you are aware that you have disordered eating, and that fasting is dangerous for you, then please don't feel you have to post on this thread. This is providing support for those of us who do choose to fast and a place to interact with each other.

If we were all to remain silent for fear of upsetting or triggering others online, there would be no MN! Many people have problems with alcohol, for example, but I've not seen anyone suggest that threads where people discuss drinking are shut down for fear of encouraging others who might be reading to drink to excess.

Disagree . The alcohol support thread doesn’t encourage people to drink ..it is there to help and support people who are trying to recover from harming themselves!
I have read this thread and it is clearly encouraging people to starve themselves and congratulating people who have achieved this .
Would these people be comfortable if their teenage child was starving themselves for days on end ?

summersanchez · 19/04/2023 21:04

Fasting is not suitable for children
Do you head to the sex and relationships threads and admonish them for their subject matter arguing that they would t want their kids to have sex or get married?
Seriously
Fuck off

Conveniently ignoring everything regarding starving yourself and congratulating one another for doing so...

Defensive much?

Of course I'm fucking defensive in the face of constant haranguing.

RoeK · 19/04/2023 21:32

Suggest discussion forums probably aren't for you if you don't like opposing opinions.

You mean you had a nice thread going egging one another on to starve yourself and congratulate one another. Even mentioning electrolytes to avoid side effects (arrhythmias among others)

Then the voice of reason came along and you don't like it.

The thread doesn't belong to you. If you don't want to engage with it then, respectfully, no one is making you.

But I've told you I'm in recovery from an ED that caused me to be hospitalised, caused by fasting, which is a completely legitimate contribution to the thread, and you tell me to fuck off? I can only assume you have other stuff going on because you would have to be a pretty nasty person to do that otherwise.
