Extended fasting, anyone?

I like to fast for 48-72 hours most weeks. Works well for me and then I minimise carbs the rest of the time (weekends not so much).

I'm almost at the end of my longest ever fast of 156hours (14 to go) and I've lost about 10lb. Based on my last long fast, I expect 3-4lb of that to go back on once I have refed but half a stone or so should be in the bin!

Curious if there's anyone else on here who's a faster?

Where do you buy your ingredients please?

Almostalwayshappy · 20/04/2023 08:52

@Seeingadistance oh sorry - need to read posts with my glasses on! @KittenThatGotTheCream Where do you buy your electrolyte ingredients and do you sip all day or drink that amount in one go? Many thanks.

We’re not in the UK so I can’t help with links, but DH buys potassium chloride, Epsom salt and pink Himalayan salt in large bags / tins from eBay and baking soda from the supermarket. The upfront cost will be similar to buying a large pack of ready-made electrolyte powder, but it will save you lots of money in the long run if you exercise or fast on a regular basis or need to take supplements to avoid leg cramps.
DH usually makes a big batch of dry electrolyte mix every three months or so. The potassium can be a bit lumpy, so a mortar is useful if you have one. Half-decent kitchen scales would also be useful.

I’ve actually found it much easier to just have a mini plastic box of electrolyte mix on me and have the appropriate amount with a glass of water as and when I need it rather than carry around a bottle of electrolyte water. On an OMAD day, I have about a gram in the morning (eat in the evening). During a fast I take around 4 grams per day or slightly more if I do any strenuous exercise / sweat a lot. Start small and definitely don’t take more than a gram at a time as any more will probably give you the runs, although some people are more sensitive than others.

Almostalwayshappy · 20/04/2023 16:17

@KittenThatGotTheCream Thank you for the info on electrolytes - really useful.

xraydelta · 20/04/2023 16:32

@KittenThatGotTheCream thank you so much. I am going to make a note of all of that x

Oh thank you kittenthatgotthecream

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 22/04/2023 20:38

How often do you do a fast if more than 24 hours?

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 22/04/2023 21:33

I do an 84-90 hour fast once a month, max. 16:8 on all other days. (Sometimes it’s more like 20:4 due to work.)

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 23/04/2023 06:06

Thanks onceagainwithfeeling
I've been using OMAD (so, 22/2) during the week. I'm now missing it after a rather indulgent, but not bingey weekend
I've managed 58 hours as a longer fast so far. Looking forward to the next one and the time saved is amazing

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 23/04/2023 21:25

Starting a (hopefully >24 hour) fast
Anyone else?

Hi!
46 hour started at 8
(don't plan to eat until Tuesday evening )

Planning to try 2x 46 /week for the next few & see how I go, had been doing a longer & a shorter fast/week & the fasting was great but the eating days have been a disaster 🙈

MistySkiesAreGone · 24/04/2023 00:13

I lived on soup for 5 days when I got Covid and felt great by the end of it. Then ate all the crap and Covid came back on day 11!

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 24/04/2023 07:48

koala good luck for your fast
Yeah, I find my eating days a bit chaotic at times. OMAD helps, but I tend not to stick to that at weekends 🙈

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 24/04/2023 07:49

misty that's weird isn't it
I hope you're okay now

Thanks!

My lunch & dinner on days following long fasts were merging into 2 meals separated by constant grazing 🙈 hoping that breaking my fast with dinner tomorrow will remove that possibly..

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 24/04/2023 21:32

Koala ahh. I definitely find it easier when I break with dinner. I must practice having lunch or even breakfast without becoming a binge machine

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 25/04/2023 14:44

I'd planned to fast until tomorrow dinner time but struggling today so i think I'll stop at 45 hours and eat this evening
Strange how some days are tougher than others

Koalascling · 25/04/2023 23:53

We matched Toast!

Sunday dinner to Tuesday dinner here too.
Pretty easy one & breaking for dinner has been more controlled that recent lunch breaks so maybe this is the way to go - I just always feel the extra night is so many hours for just missing one meal 😂 (I don't eat breakfast)

It's funny how variable the fasts feel isn't it?
Usually I realise a hard one is in that 5 day premenstral eat everything zone. Previously I've found if I have more carbs prior to fasting it's harder (although usually at the beginning of the fast) and if I don't make sure I'm well hydrated the later part of a fast gets harder - I've mostly solved with a wee bit of salt in my morning pint of water on fasting days.

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 26/04/2023 15:21

Well done koala
Yea, it's really interesting how some days are so different from others
I'm just OMAD today and that's ok but I don't think I'll be ready for a long fast soon.

Koalascling · 26/04/2023 17:17

Still matching....Today is an unintentional OMAD 😂
I'm planning another 46 from tonight (eat Friday dinner) but I'll see how I go as I don't usually like a longer fast after OMAD...

CheeseDreamsTonight · 26/04/2023 17:50

Hello all! I'm doing hormone linked fasting with a 36 hour fast at some point within the first 10 days of my cycle. I am hoping to do a 48 next month. Excited. The benefits are massive

Casuaala · 26/04/2023 18:15

Have you seen Dr Mindy Pelz's work? I'm sure that's the time she says we shouldn't fast longer than 12 hours.

Yes thanks I have. I go easy but I have a lot of weight to shift so I'm more focused on Dr Fung/TFM therapeutic fasting protocols just now.

toastandmarmaladeandtea · 26/04/2023 19:09

koala that's what I was thinking of
Eating again on Friday
I suspect I'm premenstrual (sorry if tmi) but I'm also peri menopausal (also tmi?) so it's hard to tell
I ate a bit chaotically this evening but I'll see how I go now until Friday dinner
Good luck
Hello cheese

Koalascling · 26/04/2023 20:20

Hope it goes well Toast funnily enough your pre & peri comments apply to me too although the peri stuff seems to disappear when my fasting is good (which might make sense w.r.t. insulin resistance?)
