Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

I did @absolutelyknackeredcow thank you - suddenly got really busy with work this afternoon then managed to limp through to 6pm... and like you and @needtogetfit21 I closed on 600.

Mini tomorrow, with c25k running club tomorrow evening but I am treating myself to toast made with the BEST bread (Aldi's malted bloomer) tomorrow morning before I go to work!

Rest of the family is chomping on steak, mini baked potatoes and green beans. I don’t even eat meat but the smells are making me so hungry!!!!

Less of a loss than I was hoping for which means I'm about a kilo above my fighting weight AND I've left my lunch sandwich at home so chances of a successful mini receding! GODDAMIT.

So soon after I posted I caved in and ate Sad so in fact it was a NFD.

Not the end of the world.

Cycle has arrived and I feel pretty rotten but taking it easy today. Will aim for mini tomorrow as I'll be at the gym.

Out Friday night , will need to have mini's on Saturday or Sunday to damage limitation.

NFD yesterday so hopefully back on it today. Need to get 2 fasts nailed or at least 1FD and a mini. So far this week I only have Mondays 900cals mini under my belt..

Out for dinner tomorrow.

Sorry I keep blasting on about my upcoming fasting plans for the week, it keeps it right in my head !

@needtogetfit21 well done for the scales victory and pushing through for a mini today

I ended up with a mini as well (prob slightly over a mini) at 927 because I was blowing up air mattresses and nearly fainted so realised I needed to eat! Also I made banana muffins last night, should have had one then because I couldn’t resist today!

I haven't eaten yet today. Its going to be spagetti bolognaise and a packet of popcorn. Will update in an hour!

Hope everyone has hAd a good weekend! I've not feeling too well these last few days, have had migraines in the evenings and waking up with earache and sore throats. So I've been sticking to NFD's at best. It's just too hard to crack on when I'm not feeling my best and the kids (4&2) are demanding too.

Gonna fast Tuesday and Friday this week, might even do BTB with Saturday but see how I feel. Other days sticking to 18:6 except Thursday cos I’m going out for both lunch and dinner with friends!! Hmmmm maybe I should def make Fri/Sat BTB!!

I'm aiming for a 3 faster this week but none next week as we are away for half term
Scales are not being kind ..and I'm just about maintaining
I'm going to have a sober November though and really watch food ahead ofXmas so hopefully I will get on the straight and narrow then

Thanks @needtogetfit21, @KobaniDaughters and @absolutelyknackeredcow. Today's my fast day and I've eaten 2 small bananas already!!! Not looking good so far, but we'll see. I hope you feel better soon @needtogetfit21, nothing worse than feeling rotten, without comforting hot chocolates and creamy soups. @KobaniDaughters I could never fast on the weekend, you're amazing to be able to do that. Enjoy your holiday next week @absolutelyknackeredcow. I pile it on so easily with alcohol, I tent not to waste my calories on it any more. I drink on Christmas eve until boxing day then don't buy any more.
