Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Today ended up not so good on 747. But it was my third fast day of the week, and I've had a cold. Good news it's starting to lift, so next weeks efforts should be better! Looking forward to the weekend!

KobaniDaughters · 10/10/2021 07:54

Not bad for a third FD @Beautiful3

Second one for me and closed at 497 so that’s awesome for the first week back on it. Really helps I’m working 2-8pm every day though!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2021 13:20

I definitely find busy days help fasting @KobaniDaughters

Anyone joining me tomorrow? I am 2b and mini on Weds I think. Planning a bit pot of lentil soup and a bit of freezer clearing of things like heck sausages for my packed lunch sandwiches!

Beautiful3 · 10/10/2021 18:52

Thanks @KobaniDaughters, well done on your fast. I find the evenings hard so prefer not to eat until dinner time, otherwise I can't seem to do it! I'm with you tomorrow @harriethoyle we can do this!!!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2021 19:20

What have you got planned for your meals @Beautiful3? Tomorrow I'm going to have a heck chicken sausage sandwich in a thin and either canneloni or lentil soup for the evening depending on whether I get to the supermarket during the day or not... should be c. 600 ish.

Evening all, been a tough week here but I'm back and raring to go.

Since I started a month ago I've lost 4lbs although I've sts this week.

Gym tomorrow so NFD, hoping to make some healthy food choices

Hoping for a b2b on tue/ wed and a mini at some point later in the week

Due on my cycle on Wednesday too though so that might muck things up a bit..

harriethoyle · 10/10/2021 20:15

@needtogetfit21 I ALWAYS see a disappointing (or no) loss the fast week of my period. But the next week always goes back to normal!

OP posts:
needtogetfit21 · 10/10/2021 20:25

@harriethoyle I was actually expecting a gain as I haven't fasted all week so I'm quite pleased. I have tried to be careful and drink lots of water and probably did have some mini's

harriethoyle · 10/10/2021 21:12

Yep @needtogetfit21 hydration is key! Excellent damage limitation

OP posts:
needtogetfit21 · 10/10/2021 21:22

@harriethoyle usually I would get really upset at sts despite knowing I hadn't fasted and I would let this derail me but nope not this timeGrin

KobaniDaughters · 11/10/2021 00:23

Ooof TOTM is always a killer for me too!!!

Beautiful3 · 11/10/2021 12:16

@harriethoyle jacket spuds for me later. Should leave me enough for an apple or tiny packet of popcorn too.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2021 18:55

Hi all - looks like some excellent losses today ! I'm on Day 1 of a b2b - it's TOTM and I feel like a whale so hoping that I make it
Also might do a third this week as I still haven't got back to my target weight following my summer hols !

harriethoyle · 11/10/2021 19:01

@absolutelyknackeredcow I'm b2b as well and a mini on Wednesday so we can do it together!

We're having an open house at the weekend to finally celebrate our elopement with some friends so I want to look super slinky in my new frock Grin

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2021 20:00

Beautiful3 · 11/10/2021 21:34

Todays finished on 543. Wednesday should be my next fast day.

KobaniDaughters · 12/10/2021 07:16

Aw @harriethoyle congrats belatedly on the elopement and happy partying at the weekend!

FD planned fir tomorrow (Tuesday)

absolutelyknackeredcow · 12/10/2021 08:13

Had a dry piece of toast this morning and then a cup of tea for day 2 of b2b
Feeling ok but it tends to hit me later

Beautiful3 · 12/10/2021 11:48

Well done, losing 4 lbs is great! @needtogetfit21

needtogetfit21 · 12/10/2021 12:01

Thanks @Beautiful3 ! Technically with my tdee the most I can lose a week is 2/3 of a lb but I've noticed the first few lbs come
Off quicker (every time I restart 😳)

@harriethoyle congratulations!! If you feel able to we would love to see you in your new frock but no worries at all if you don't want to share Grin

I did a sort of mini yesterday with 900cals.

FD today and just had an M&S soup. Going to have a chicken shammi in a warburtons roll at 4ish and that'll be me

Feeling every groggy and tired today so just taking it easy. Cleaned downstairs this morn. Cycle due tomorrow the joys !

harriethoyle · 12/10/2021 12:11

I am fricking STARVING 😳 No idea how I'm going to get through to teatime and I've literally just had lunch. Argh!
