Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

Oh wow well done @prettybird

I only managed 14hrs today - but tomorrow is a new day and will just try again Grin

Dinner is chilli con carne 😋

StuntNun · 04/05/2021 16:53

Nice one PrettyBird and good luck tomorrow MasterOfOne. I'm 22 hours in and my DH is kindly making something I don't like for his dinner so I won't be tempted! The kids are having pasta bake so that's definitely out. DS2 made it in school in Food Technology so I hope it's nice. It's not the kind of thing we usually have as DS1 has autism and doesn't like different textures mixed together.

I managed 25 hours in the end but caved after a stressful Microsoft Teams meeting. Almond muffin and bone broth to break my fast not thinking about wine not thinking about wine not thinking about wine.

Another week of 23:1 eating - one meal a day.

I've been doing OMAD for about 4 weeks now. I think I might have a day off this weekend to try and shake things up a bit.

Not sure if I'll have a carb meal or just a nice big low carb meal with berries and cream. I fancy a breakfast out but nowhere is open for that yet here.

@StuntNun - does your practitioner only deal with eating issues?

StuntNun · 05/05/2021 19:02

Veneto she does all sorts of stuff. I can send you the link if you like.

Met friends today for a walk. One group was late arriving so I had a latte whilst I waited. Then another after the walk. I was starving by 2pm. I am so all or nothing! Had a piece of cheese as I knew I had a run later so a 9pm dinner.

StuntNun · 07/05/2021 17:48

16:8 is going well again and I'm managing two meals a day with no snacking. I'm starting to think my period really f*cks things up for me appetite-wise. And a surprise NSV (Non-Scale Victory) today - one of my skin tags has fallen off. I only had two and the other one has been there since I was a child so I suspect that's a fixture. But apparently skin tags are a sign of insulin resistance so I'm sure it's a good sign that the recently developed one has gone.

All quiet on the fasting-front!

I've been keeping on with the OMAD over the past week. I've extended my eating window a little though. I've eaten berries and cream for dessert quite a few times. I think that's my tipping point between weight loss and staying the same weight. Sigh.

I did run another 10K on Sunday (gained 1kg as a result!) so my fitness is definitely improving.

I'll give it a few more days and then I think I'll be ready for a day off plan.

Hope you're all well and whatever plan you're following is going well.

StuntNun · 11/05/2021 13:55

It is a bit quiet. I'm struggling at the moment so I've been back on breakfasts which the messes up the whole day for me. I just can't motivate myself at the moment for some reason.

Hello all,

Like you , I have been really struggling as well. My mood has completely tanked and lots of personal issues creeping up as well......

I know what I need to do..... I think I just need to work though this little crisis and get right back on IF and watching my carbs....... it just seems really hard right now Sad

StuntNun · 14/05/2021 07:00

Sorry to hear that MasterOfOne I'm sticking with 16:8 for now although it's been hard. It's best if I'm out of the house in the morning because then I'm distracted and there's no food available anyway. If I'm at home then the kitchen is too tempting. I much prefer working in an office to working from home. Yes it's more convenient with not having to travel and you can wear whatever you want, but then there's the never getting away from work because it's always there and you feel the added pressure of housework. In the office then my lunch break was an actual break but at home I'm trying to eat while loading the dishwasher and putting the washing out.

Hello! I’m really interested in the muffins (although I’m only in my first week of this). I have almond flour and ground almonds. Will almond flour work do you think?

StuntNun · 14/05/2021 13:26

I got better results with ground almonds than with almond flour. I also increased the cheese amount by 50% and add pepper and smoked paprika. IMO oregano works better than chives.

Is anyone fasting this week? I'm sticking to 16:8 as best I can - trying to keep busy in the mornings.

I had a (mindful) break from LCing / OMAD this weekend.

I had a mixing meal on Friday, along with some cheese, nuts and a snickers...

Saturday I finished the cheese.

Yesterday I had lunch (salad and low-ish carb apart from the balsamic dressing), with two lattes. And a low carb dinner with some salted almonds.

My weight is up 0.7kg from Friday. But down 0.7kg from Saturday!

Back to OMAD from today. Maybe the weekend shakeup will have done some good longer term. I didn't enjoy Friday's meal which teaches me that I don't need to feel I'm missing out there. I can make a nicer meal myself!

MasterOfOne · 18/05/2021 10:08

So jumping right back into it! Starting with reminding my body how to fast, so aiming for 18hrs today and will break with a ham and mushroom omelette. I am not low carbing and WILL need a glass of wine tonight. Have put on a couple of KG :( really sad about that but know I can lose it again one I am back in low carb no alcohol mode.... but one thing at a time Grin

VenetoResident · 18/05/2021 17:04

@MasterOfOne I gained 3kg over Easter. It was gone with a week of LCing. Good luck with your 18h fast.

I've had THREE lattes today (no venti-Starbucks horrors though!) so although no food has passed my lips, plenty of calories have and I'm STARVING!!!

MasterOfOne · 18/05/2021 17:16

Thank you! Got to 19hrs and feel OK, if a little fatigued. I had a nap to stop me from breaking fast early.

God I miss costa coffee latte.... but my bank account doesn't lol 🙃

StuntNun · 01/06/2021 10:51

Who is still fasting? I'm starting fasting after dinner tonight, hoping to make 48 hours. I have dental work scheduled tomorrow morning so I think it will be easier on me if I don't eat lunch or dinner afterwards. It's also a new month and I aim for an extended fast at the start of each month. What's everyone else up to?

prettybird · 01/06/2021 23:03

I'm sort of 50 hours into a fast Hmm. I say "sort of" because I unthinkingly had a glass of pink Cava yesterday afternoon (out on the patio with visitors) and then a glass of English bubbly (leftover from Sunday) after rugby training in the evening Blush

It only occurred to me afterwards that the alcohol meant I'd proven my fast ConfusedBlush

I'll have done Greek yoghurt in the morning, before doing The Shred (and rugby training again in the evening).

StuntNun · 02/06/2021 13:30

Dr Mindy Pelz did a video on breaking your fast with alcohol on her YouTube channel. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ANMYq7fazzk I'm not sure it's really recommended though! Grin

I'm only 19 hours in and feeling a bit irritable about fasting. But my varicose vein is starting to become more prominent again so I need to sort that out at least. Fasting flattens it out but only for a few weeks and then it comes back again.

OP posts:
prettybird · 02/06/2021 15:51

I managed it through until 8.30 so that was about 61 hours Smile not counting the alcohol Wink

Enjoyed tea with milk and some Greek yogurt with cinnamon to break the fast and then did Level 2 of The Shred at about 10.

StuntNun · 02/06/2021 18:34

Very impressive!

44 hours in and I've just had some bone broth because I have a killer headache (from driving, not from fasting - I think I clench my teeth on long journeys.) I'm visiting my DM though and she can't understand fasting at all so I'll be expected to have dinner tonight. That'll be just about 48 hours though which is a good long fast.
