Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

Morning All,

Very good week of between 20 - 24hr fasting. Today aiming for 24hrs but if I am feeling OK I'll skip dinner and head into a 36-40hr fast.

Have second vaccine jab tomorrow morning so prepared to have a very sedate weekend.

Have completely fallen off the exercise wagon and need to get back to it, esp for my mental health.

Have a great day peeps!

StuntNun · 23/04/2021 12:50

OMAD does work for some Veneto so no need to change things around unless your weight loss stalls.

@StuntNun - thanks for that! I'll KOKO!

@MasterOfOne - how did you go? 24 or 36. Maybe I'll try 36 one day. I think I'd be scared of getting a bad nights sleep from being hungry. Is that likely?

I'm really enjoying the exercise I do - a yoga class twice a week and running three times a week. I do feel like it's helping the toning and maybe the weight loss a bit.

I bought a bag of pet food the other day that weighed 15kg. I couldn't carry it. Yet I was running with an extra 13kg in January!!! No wonder I was struggling. It's a lot of weight. I really advise everyone to go to a pet shop / supermarket and pick up what they've lost.

VenetoResident · 25/04/2021 08:22

Reached my (first) target weight - a healthy BMI!! Really happy. 13.6kg off since January. Even allowing for a week off and a 3kg gain over Easter it doesn't feel like it's taken that long.

MasterOfOne · 25/04/2021 09:15

Whooooop whoop @VenetoResident what an inspiration!!!

Made 24hrs from Friday- Saturday but then had my jab yesterday and feel (still feel) pretty rubbish.

Still - a whole 1.2kg down this week - my face is like Shock
That's 8kgs since is started IF - I am so so pleased and really hope I can get to healthy BMI in thr next 8 weeks or so.

VenetoResident · 29/04/2021 06:57

Everyone's quiet! Hope you're all ok.

@MasterOfOne - feeling better after the jab now? I have my next one next week.

MasterOfOne · 29/04/2021 08:47

Much much better thank you!!

It's been a good week averaging 18- 20hrs, it now just seems normal not to eat until 5ish now, but I have gone dirty and have a splash of milk in my tea now during the day - makes a huge difference, and I am happier for it Grin

How are you holding up?

MasterOfOne · 29/04/2021 18:17

Nearly 24 hours today Grin breaking fast with a cheese ham and mushroom omelette 😋

VenetoResident · 30/04/2021 19:30

@MasterOfOne - well done! How did it feel?

I've done OMAD so more or less 23:1 every day. Wednesday was a bit longer because we had a late lunch on Tuesday after my first ever 10K!

I've had lots of berries & cream Mon, Tue & Wed so not much of a loss this week. But I lost 1.4kg last week so I have faith in the random whoosh!

MasterOfOne · 30/04/2021 21:17

Really no problem @VenetoResident work has been crazy so with back to back meetings it's relatively easy to get to 3/ 4om without eating. The dirty fasting ( splash of milk) has meetings it more enjoyable though.

Have my first tester pair of jeans- I wore them at uni nearly 20 years ago...... I will fit into them by the end of May Grin

MasterOfOne · 30/04/2021 21:22

@VenetoResident I am so jealous at your running 10k - well done 👏

How was it??

VenetoResident · 01/05/2021 18:56

I drink coffee with milk throughout the day. The OMAD compensates for the milk! It definitely helps.

The 10K was easy! I've been Jeffing - interval running - and we ran more slowly than normal to stay with a friend. I didn't even feel achey the next day!

Just had a lovely dinner after another 24h fast. :)

I've worked a few days this week so I haven't done as much exercise as normal. Another whoosh today though - half a kilo down.

I've set a new target - 3kg more. BMI of 23.6. I've no idea if it's possible but I'll find out. I'd just like a buffer that keeps me at a healthy BMI even if I have another week off.

MasterOfOne · 02/05/2021 08:23

I like the idea of building in a buffer - I think I'll do the same after I hit my first goal.

Another 1.1kg down this week, my face was like Shock when I saw the scales this morning. IF is remarkable.
I think I have fallen quite naturally into the one meal a day most days now. Low carbing has been a battle as my daughter has done a tonne of baking this weekend!

I have another 5kg to go to top end of healthy BMI and am so excited.

I have completely fallen off the exercise wagon, and will make an effort, esp as the weather is getting better. I can feel the effect of lack of exercise on my back and general mental health and mood lately.

Have a wonderful weekend 😀

StuntNun · 02/05/2021 15:26

What's the plan for next week everyone? I'm thinking about an extended fast from Monday dinner.

OP posts:
prettybird · 02/05/2021 15:53

I'm going to do a 48 hour fast after tonight's roast lamb dinner, so until Tuesday night. Can't do longer as we'll have left over toast lamb to use up Wink

MasterOfOne · 02/05/2021 15:53

Hey @StuntNun - how are you doing??

This weekend has been 16hrs sat and 18 hours today. Will probably do 18hrs tomorrow then aim for 22 hrs Tues- Friday.

Not sure I am quite ready to attempt a 24hr+ fasts at the moment. Focus is getting more exercise in this week Grin

StuntNun · 02/05/2021 16:44

There wouldn't be any roast lamb left in this house after 48 hours PrettyBird - the perils of having teenage children!

I'm just going to see how I go MasterOfOne as my eating has been a bit crap lately. I have one bad/indulgent day and then I'm starving the next day so I eat breakfast and then I end up eating all day and it spirals out of control. Whereas if I stick with 16:8 everything works fine. I did some BWRT (brain working recursive therapy - https://www.ns-healthcare.com/analysis/brain-working-recursive-therapy/) yesterday for overeating that I'm hoping is going to make a difference. It's all psychological with me. I can easily fast for four days in a row yet I get so scared that I'm going to be hungry that I eat to stop myself getting hungry. The BWRT is supposed to break that unhealthy thought pattern ("I am always hungry" and replace it with a better one ("I don't need to eat right now") instead.

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 02/05/2021 16:52

Never heard of BWRT (and I have tried a lot of different therapies) so going to take a deeper look.

I'd be really interested in hearing how you find it goes. I am back to seeing a clinical psychologist as part of the bariatric programme because I am still have trouble moderating my eating behaviour, lots of uncontrolled binging, then periods of "famine" but ita not starving because i am eating to lose weight, but because of the large swing between the two if feels like deprivation.

I just want some balance in my eating. IF has helped me gain some control but I feel like this will be a lifelong challenge for me.

StuntNun · 02/05/2021 19:23

MasterOfOne I do feel that it's made a difference. I just had my dinner and was contemplating having a cup of tea and piece of chocolate when the thought popped up, "I don't need to eat right now." So I didn't have it! I can put you in touch with the practitioner that treated me if you like although she did say she's fully booked for the next few weeks.

MasterOfOne · 02/05/2021 19:59

Yes please @StuntNun Smile

Fortunately ds is up in Aberdeen at the moment @StuntNun - but anyway, roast chicken is his "thing" Grin and he's now learnt to cook it for himself, after I bought him a vintage Habitat chicken brick for Christmas

I do buy a large leg of lamb even though there's only two or three of us eating it (my dad, dh and me) because I love having plenty the leftovers. Tuesday night will be cold lamb, Wednesday Suleman's Pilaff (with cauliflower rice for me) and Thursday low carb shepherds pie, with probably enough shepherd pie mince base to freeze for a "bolognaise" at a later date. Smile

StuntNun · 04/05/2021 10:32

I'm 16 hours in and just going to see how I go with this fast. I'd like to make at least 24 hours. What's everyone else planning?

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 04/05/2021 10:54

Go for it @StuntNun you've got this!

I am aiming for 18 today, but generally don't feel wonderful today, terrible headache and nausea (but mainly stress related!) So might break off earlier before I have a nap.

prettybird · 04/05/2021 15:41

I'm 43 hours in to my 48 hour fast Smile Half thinking of making it 60 hours - but the cold lamb from our roast on Sunday is calling me Wink
