Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

How are you doing today ZiggZagg? And is anyone else fasting or planning a fast? I'm going to stick with my usual 16:8 next week for the start of the Low Carb Bootcamp and aim for two meals a day with no snacks.

Morning Grin

Nearly 17hours into an 18 or 22 hour fast... haven't quite decided. Feeling pretty hungry now so might break early for lunch, will see how I feel after my next meeting.

My neighbour made a keto chocolate lava cake last night that was divine and I need to make that again this weekend.

How are you??

ZiggZagg · 09/04/2021 13:09

Failed at the first hurdle Sad I was very hungry when I woke up yesterday, managed to stretch it to 1pm but definitely needed to eat!

MasterOfOne · 09/04/2021 14:49

I don't think you failed @ZiggZagg - I think you listened to your body and gave it what it needed.

Be kind to yourself! Grin

StuntNun · 12/04/2021 07:18

Who's fasting today? I'm sticking with 16:8 this week.

Morning Grin

Aiming for 24hrs today, if I feel fine I'll power through until tomorrow morning!

StuntNun · 12/04/2021 14:05

Good luck with it MasterOfOne.

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for far too long so thought it was time I emerged from my shell Blush. Seems to be a small and friendly group over here so not too overwhelming.

How are you all?

I discovered fasting just over a month ago and returned to low carb at the end of January. I've low carbed on and off since 2015, albeit more off than on. It's more than just weight loss this time though.

I'm about 17 hours into a 36-40 hour fast. I normally do two similarly longer fasts per week but only managed one last week - the novelty is wearing off slightly I think, but on I plod. My longest fast so far has been 43.5 hours but I need to be incredibly distracted to get that far, although I would love to try for 60 hours at some point this summer.

Good luck @MasterOfOne

ZiggZagg · 12/04/2021 17:10

Welcome @ImitatingAdulthood !

Good luck @MasterOfOne !

Ramadan starts tomorrow (well at 3.50am) so will be doing approximately 30 16 hour fasts in a row, no water, no food, no ecigs! Doesn't sound so bad on paper but I have to fit eating and sleeping into the remaining 8 hours!! I'm hoping lots of fat and FLGV will be my key to successful fasting this year!!

Good luck everyone Grin

ImitatingAdulthood · 12/04/2021 19:31

Thank you @ZiggZagg. It sounds very difficult on paper to me. I was discussing Ramadan with someone last week and realised that the eating and sleeping window is actually shorter than just my ideal sleeping window. It would make me very grumpy indeed, so I have admiration to all those who manage it. Wishing you lots of spiritual benefits.

MasterOfOne · 12/04/2021 19:38

Thank you all! I stopped at 24hrs and broke my fast with a lovely bacon and mushroom omelette..... then descended pretty badly from there ( pre teens Angry ) so closed my window with half an Easter egg and feel really sick now! I won't do that in a hurry!

Aiming for 20-22hrs tomorrow- it's so much easier for me to fast when working and dc is at school - sigh one more week to go!

Plus note down another kg this week - officially the lightest I have been in adulthood Grin 8 more to go for Healthy BMI.

Welcome @ImitatingAdulthood - and good luck! I was so chuffed to have made it past 40hrs and couldn't have done it without this lovely group. My next goal will be 60-72hrs but I think I am going to wait until after my period Grin

ImitatingAdulthood · 12/04/2021 19:49

@MasterOfOne I find the first 24 hours the worst so well done on making it through. It is comforting to know that others are living with temptation too - it's not always as simple as removing offending food from the house. Hope you feel better soon and well done on the latest kilo.

I'm hoping that posting will be more motivating than lurking.

Hi everyone! I'm back after six days VERY off plan (low carb, OMAD) over Easter.

I didn't even really enjoy it. The food was OK but I felt so ill. Carb comas every night. So bloated and my tummy was not happy.

Eased back into plan.

A couple of days of O(proper)MAD with handfuls of peanuts to get me through the rest of the day.

A couple of days of O(proper)MAD with some cheese at a different time of day.

Managed just OMAD on Sunday but had food at 3pm yesterday in addition to dinner at 9pm as it was my first run in a week yesterday (post quarantine).

So, the 3kg gain recorded on Thu is now down to a 0.5kg gain since 31/3.

Won't run again until Thursday so hoping to get back to OMAD Tue & Wed so a 23ish hour fast Mon-Tue and Tue-Wed. Then maybe I'll have a late lunch on Thursday before I run.

Lots of stress again at the moment - kids learning virtually and unpacking after a house move / packing and cleaning the temporary house so it's not going to be easy. Feel like I've had a headache for weeks now. And my period has been on and off for weeks. I know LC messes with my periods though so not really concerned, plus I have a new-ish coil in.

Good luck to everyone whatever your plans are for today!

VenetoResident · 13/04/2021 08:55

@MasterOfOne - well done on your amazing weight loss!!! Roll on that healthy BMI :)

@ImitatingAdulthood - I think posting really does help. You're committing to something and then reflecting on it this way. I know I've been avoiding the thread whilst I've been off plan. I'm either off or on. I don't have a mid-point! I've also LC for a long time. 7ish years now. Not always properly on plan hence I still need to lose 3kg for a healthy BMI. It's always suited me though as I've also lost weight on the SW Original / Red plan.

@ZiggZagg - do you find the not drinking harder than the not eating? Good luck!

@StuntNun - is your 16:8 lunch and dinner?

MasterOfOne · 13/04/2021 13:03

Thank you @VenetoResident Grin

StuntNun · 13/04/2021 13:16

Veneto I usually have lunch around noon and dinner at 17:30 so it's more like 18:6 than 16:8. I aim for just lunch and dinner and no snacks but that means I need to have big meals as my TDEE is 1985. It's harder than you might think to eat 1000 calories for lunch!

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 13/04/2021 17:31

I like what you said @VenetoResident about posting here makes me feel accountable too!

22hrs done today, broke fast with scrambled eggs, mushrooms cheese and bacon and going to confess now I am totally over eggs. Will give it a break for a few days now.

How is everyone else doing??

StuntNun · 13/04/2021 19:16

I didn't manage no snacks but I did stay within y eating window. So a partial win for me!

OP posts:
ZiggZagg · 13/04/2021 23:06

@VenetoResident to be honest, it's not that bad once you do it a few times, the worst thing is how long it lasts! It goes so slow from about day 20 Grin

ZiggZagg · 13/04/2021 23:07

Also ignored my 4am alarm so ended up a nifty 24 hour fast! Result!

MasterOfOne · 14/04/2021 11:52

Love an accidental extended fast!

Aiming for 22hrs today but really struggling now :( if I can make it though the next hour, I am ghrb on back to back meetings until 4 so that will be goal achieved. I know it's because I am due on I want to eat everything right now.

Have put a splash of milk in my coffee and hopefully that will get me to 4pm without chewing my arm off Grin

MasterOfOne · 14/04/2021 16:10

Broke my fast at 22hrs but did require another tea with a splash of milk.

Broke fast with protein yoghurt because totally over eggs right now.

Dinner will be bolognese served with fried mushrooms and ALL THE CHEESE Grin

VenetoResident · 15/04/2021 09:25

Managed the OMAD Tuesday so about a 22h fast (late dinner on Mon). Not a great meal - homemade chicken korma & veg with strawberries and cream. But trying to use up bits from the freezer.

OMAD Wednesday as well so that was around 23h. Slow cooker beef and veg with a few strawberries and some cream.

Now just 100g of the Easter gain to lose.

@StuntNun - I've never counted calories. Presumably I don't need to if my goal is to lose weight and I'm losing weight? My TDEE for weight loss is about 1400 calories. I'm not terribly active in my day to day activities but I'm training for a half marathon (very early days!) and would do yoga twice a week in a normal week.

@MasterOfOne - I did an egg fast once. Was very very over eggs after that!!

I drink coffee with a splash of milk too often really. But my main goal is weighloss so until that stops I'm OK. I should drink more plain water / fruit tea though.

@ZiggZagg - how many days does it last? I should know really!

Run tonight. May try OMAD with lots of fluids today and see how I go. It's only half an hour - about 2.5 miles.
