Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

So, I lasted 23 hours, could have gone more but was very weak in a moment of hunger Sad of course I had planned not to eat and had not prepared anything so went significantly off plan. Note to self, have pre-prepared food during a fast so that I don't eat all the crisps!

StuntNun · 03/04/2021 13:18

I use this electrolyte powder MasterOfOne in fact I'm on my tenth pack in three years! It's cheap and doesn't contain any flavourings or sweeteners. I drink it when I'm fasting, after workouts, and occasionally through the day. Otherwise I find I wake up in the night simultaneously thirsty and needing to pee which makes no sense! Adding electrolytes clearly helps me to absorb the water. I add one scoop per litre of water so one pack does 100 litres of water.

Oh no ZiggZagg that's happens to all of us at least once. I ended a fast with chips one time in a moment of weakness. On the other hand I find I'm more likely to end my fast because I'm looking forward to the yummy things I've bought just for that so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts.

Thanks so much @StuntNun!

I also think maybe playing with my hours a bit might make over 24hrs achievable. Will have a little think Grin

MasterOfOne · 04/04/2021 20:04

After 24hrs "off" have closed my window and back straight into a 20hrs fast!

Hope you all are doing well Grin

StuntNun · 05/04/2021 06:34

Morning fasters, what are your plans for this week? I'm doing a 20-hour fast to dinner today since there was some late night snacking going on here last night so I can't fit in a 24-hour fast today. Blush

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 05/04/2021 18:18

Well didn't manage my 20hrs (Easter really has me messed up!) Luckily back to work tomorrow, have eaten well today (nothing remotely healthy but under my calories count!) So doing a clean 24hrs and cutting alcohol now for the rest of April!
I like to set monthly challenges, and was very nearly going to try couch to 5k but think that might be too much of a psychological leap Grin
So will prioritise trying to find my rhythm with fasting, and trying out the electrolyte salts!

ZiggZagg · 05/04/2021 19:38

16:8 today and tomorrow then another go at an extended fast from Wednesday dinner time. I'm aiming for 36 hours but if I can go for more, I will Grin

MasterOfOne · 05/04/2021 19:51

Good luck @ZiggZagg! I really hope I managed to complete my first 36hour this month so would love to know how you get on, and share any tips and tricks you have that make things easier!

ZiggZagg · 05/04/2021 22:49

Thanks master.

I have Ramadan coming up on the 13th, that is complete fasting so I am preparing for that! If I can do 36 hours, I can easily do 16 with no food, water or fags Grin

This year will be my first doing low carb so I am hoping for really good weight loss and health benefits (as well as spiritual reasons of course!)

StuntNun · 06/04/2021 08:33

I'm sure Ramadan fasting will be much easier if you're already eating low carb ZiggZagg. Are you going to stick to the Ramadan fasting or try and fit the odd extended fast in as well?

OP posts:
ZiggZagg · 06/04/2021 10:37

No, I'm going to just stick to usual fasting as the breaking of the fast is a big event, we cook delicious food and all sit together and eat. That's a lovely part of it as we very rarely do that the rest of the year!

StuntNun · 06/04/2021 13:57

That sounds lovely. My mum is Muslim but she doesn't practice Ramadan any more.

I'm 19 hours into a planned 38. Feeling okay despite 1st day of period. I've really struggled to fast for longer than 20 hours recently which I put down to carb creep on non fast days. Bizarrely I lost 2lb over the Easter weekend.

StuntNun · 06/04/2021 16:47

Good luck with it Oneborn you should be fine if your period has already started. It's in the run up to it that your hormones can make fasting less optimal.

I've hit 24 hours now and feel really good..... I wonder whether I should try and see it through to 36/40 hours or just go ahead and break my fast now? I have a 7pm meeting so will see how I feel over the next couple of hours!
Clearly starting my fasting earlier yesterday has paid off!

ZiggZagg · 06/04/2021 17:02

If I'm being honest stunt I'm not the most pious myself! I'm a revert so should make much better choices than I do! I do love Ramadan though, I love the focus it gives me and the lovely focus on delicious food!

StuntNun · 06/04/2021 21:29

How are you getting on with your fast MasterOfOne?

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 07/04/2021 06:36

Morning @StuntNun well I made it to 38 hours now (yay finally!) And have woken with quite the headache. I am just going to keep going, I don't feel hungry at all and thankfully my electrolytes are being delivered today!

How are you all doing??

StuntNun · 07/04/2021 08:12

Ouch on the headache MasterOfOne make sure you get a salty drink. Just salt and a squeeze of lemon juice in water is usually enough to help.

I've been really hungry lately so I'm sticking to 16:8 at the moment. Yesterday evening I couldn't stop eating after dinner. I did a workout earlier in the day though so that might make me hungrier. My TDEE is almost 2000 calories and it's not always easy to get that in two meals a day.

OP posts:
MasterOfOne · 07/04/2021 08:50

Yup just made a giant cup of tea with some sea salt in - just a dull ache of a headache now, but feeling quite tired now. Heading into a 3 hour meeting now Sad so will see how I feel after that and probably break my fast with some cheesy scrambled eggs!

It's strange because at the weekend I was just the same, I literally couldn't stop eating, it was ridiculous and probably didn't help with the alcohol - fasting is much easier when dry and sober lol.

I am not sure what my TDEE is but I do think I need to eat a little more. I try to keep to 1200 but the minute I go over that my weight just goes up! Sigh

MasterOfOne · 07/04/2021 13:13

Made it to 43 hours Grin

StuntNun · 07/04/2021 13:53

Woohoo MasterOfOne well done you!

I am so chuffed and really couldn't have done it without this lovely supporting thread! ❤

ZiggZagg · 07/04/2021 22:18

So, I have started my extended fast! Aiming for breakfast Friday with a workout or two in between. Have dropped 3lb of my 5lb gain this week so trying to stay motivated.

MasterOfOne · 08/04/2021 10:07

You've got this @ZiggZagg and well done on the loss
