Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Quiet in here today
I've not eaten much at all, some ham and salad at lunch and waiting for poached duck breasts with cabbage to be cooked!

I've had a disaster day today.
Was doing well until lunch - nice salad if courgette, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and chicken.

We've had a dull day of trying to sort and declutter and DP and I have been bickering most of the day because if trying to do such necessary but dull stuff and disagreeing on priorities etc. DS for some reason didn't eat any of his lunch of pesto and pasta. Mid afternoon i was so dispirited i ate the lot. Then late afternoon felt wiped out and rubbish. Had wine this evening, so overall way too many calories and refined carbs.

Maccalenny · 13/10/2019 11:42

Hope everyone is having good weekend. I have a chicken stew in the slow cooker that is just starting to smell quite wonderful, and a plan for a fish pie to make later for main meals this week. So I’m happy!
Bear how was the duck? Not something I’ve ever cooked either.
Brugmansia - half a good day is better than none at all! Hope today goes better for you.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/10/2019 11:53

Macca it was actually very nice, like a very tender steak, but I could have done with crisping the skin side a bit more before adding the stock.

justbeingelle · 13/10/2019 18:58

@Maccalenny thanks for the tips, very helpful! Day 2 almost done and so far so good! I think I'll struggle come the weekend again when I usually have a take away and wine. I'm finding that planning ahead really helps me so meal planning all the way!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/10/2019 19:19

Had my first run in a week today, I felt unfit and rusty! Foods been ok, but I did eat a piece of cake at lunch and 2 roasties at dinner so not entirely angelic

I would anticipate that after this week I'll have a 2-3lb overall loss on the scales tomorrow as the weekend has undone some of my good work. I am going to attempt another fast 800 day tomorrow as I'm not running.

I haven't written my shopping list or menu yet, normally that's my Sunday afternoon activity!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/10/2019 08:08

Weighed in at 10.7.5 which is a 5(ish) lb loss last week. Very pleased with that. It will be interesting to see how it pans out once I reintroduce running this week. Today is Fast800 day so I'm just going to fast as long as I can, then have my 2 eggs. Not sure if dinner yet.

Have a great week everyone!

OP posts:
Brugmansia · 14/10/2019 08:38

Yesterday was much better. Today it's the first time I'm trying to completely fast until lunchtime. Just black coffee this morning.

PhoenixMama · 14/10/2019 09:02

Morning all! Haven't weighed in this morning as it was Canadian Thanksgiving yesterday, which was delicious and very much not on plan! I'm also due to come on which is not helpful. Feeling very puffy & bloated.

Need to sit down today & figure out my food because I'm traveling & away from home a lot this week with relying on others for meals. I'm also going to be shattered with lots of early starts & late finishes.

I really want to lose this last 12 bloody lbs but not sure if these next few weeks are the right ones to do it in & maybe I'll be better off maintaining than trying to lose more?

That said, yesterday I wore a leather skirt that I haven't worn in 6 years & I bought it when I was at my last smallest after DD and it was huge on me. I have come so far but I also really do want those last lbs ideally by the end of the year!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/10/2019 09:34

Phoenix nice work! you've done so well. It's totally possible to lose the last few pounds before Christmas even if you had an odd day where your commitments mean you can't do the plan properly- I'd go for it. If you aim to lose and end up maintaining, you're no worse off than now. Sometimes I find that it's easier to be strict than attempt to maintain by allowing occasional treats (I am basically undoing a summer's worth of occasional daily treats right now) and if your head's in the right place you know you can stick to it. It's 9 weeks til Christmas so 1.5lb a week off is infinitely doable and you'll be at target by the big day! How exciting!

Afternoon all.

Not a perfect week for me by any means. Have a horrible chesty cough and feel pretty urgh. This is week 3. So I’m fed up with it and there has been comfort eating and wine. Especially over the weekend. However I did stick to fasting until middday every day other than a few cups of tea. Have also been having manuka honey and lemon though.

Weighed in and I’m down 2.3 pounds. Fairly happy with that considering.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/10/2019 20:29

My day today has been an unmitigated disaster from start to finish. Well, since my rather optimistic post at 8am this morning. I am feeling incredibly emotionally fragile right now, and the day just descended quickly into chaos.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow we start again....Grin

Fluffywithteeth · 15/10/2019 15:10

Hope I can join you.....
Have ordered the fast 800 shakes so that I can have those during the day and a meal in the evening.
I’m too despondent to weigh myself but will do that the day the shakes arrive (probably tomorrow) but I reckon it’s 7kg I need to lose.

So annoying as I feel I gain and lose this same bloody 7kg .... and it’s been going on it feels all my life!

I think my plan is to really just go for it and do the 800 for 2 weeks and then do the 2:5 so that am doing 800 mon-fri and more normal at the weekend .....

Anyone else doing the shakes?

Have also caught the horrible chesty bug that’s going round so really am feeling sorry for myself!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/10/2019 18:22

Welcome fluffy. I've not used the official shakes but I have had reasonable success with homemade ones. I think if nothing Else they streamline your menu so that there's less to consider- same calories every day until dinner time. I do that strategy quite a lot but do it by having 2 eggs and 1tbsp oil as my 'allowance' for lunch each day.

I've had a good day today because I've barely eaten anything. My dc were sick in the night and I half expect it's in the post for me too, as I've had zero appetite today which is very unlike me!

OP posts:
Fluffywithteeth · 15/10/2019 21:50

Ah thanks newaveragebear.... and poor you! Hope the dc are better and you manage to swerve it.

Yes, I’m hoping the shakes will do exactly that and streamline things. What did you put in your homemade shakes?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/10/2019 16:04

Thanks fluffy, I seem to have escaped the noro thank goodness.

In my shakes I used to use almond milk, about 50g frozen raspberries and a few blocks of frozen spinach, some peanut butter powder, sometimes some Maca powder too. Maybe some cacao or cinnamon (although these can make it bitter). For fat you could add some oil, some yogurt or some avocado? They were meal replacements for me, so they are quite calorie heavy (ie 2/300 cals) but they have no sugar or sweeteners etc, high protein, low carb.

OP posts:
FurryTurnipHead · 16/10/2019 17:32

Checking it, as had my first weigh in yesterday and had lost 3.5 lbs. Am pleased with that, as I know I didn't stick to 800, and got a bit lazy with tracking it on mfp. Also succumbed to quite a lot of paneer curry at the weekend. But, haven't hit the carbs or sugar which are my usual danger zone, my stomach is much flatter and my waistline is reappearing!
Some really helpful advice and support on here, so thanks everyone! Am going to try and track much more closely this week and see what I can do.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/10/2019 21:17

Closing up the kitchen on 1300 cals, 60g carbs, 17k steps (7km was a run)

A reasonable day. My foods been good at mealtimes but I did have a few 'fridge moments' this evening- only had a piece of ham and a few mini sausages but the calories still add up.

I'd love to do a Fast800 day tomorrow, but not sure if it's feasible.
I'm running with my friend first thing, then something with Ds after nursery, then a quick trip to town after school- so in theory I could have my eggs as a late lunch and hold off til dinner for my main meal, so we'll see.

OP posts:
Fluffywithteeth · 16/10/2019 23:24

Thanks newaverage! My shakes arrived today so am starting tomorrow ....

Well done furryturniphead - 3.5lb is excellent!! You’re on a roll now....

Am busy tomorrow so hopefully won’t notice too much only having The shakes. Did have a bit of a blow out today though 😞 😬

Fluffywithteeth · 17/10/2019 14:21

So weigh in this morning .... 70.9kg and I want to get to 63 kg.... what do you reckon? Can I get there in 2 months doing 800 every day for the first 2 weeks and then 800 mon- fri and weekends off (but not indulging!!) ?

Had shakes for breakfast and lunch and all fine. They’re not too bad / not too sugary. Am planning cod with cauliflower mash, tomato sauce and courgettes for dinner.....

How was your run this morning? We’ve just had a deluge here! Bug is in its way out so hopefully back to the gym tomorrow (always an effort to go back when you’ve had a break so am psyching myself up for it!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/10/2019 19:37

Thanks fluffy my run was good. I've missed it this month, hardly been out at all. Ended up doing 10km with my friend, but I'm feeling it now.

My food has been ok today but not brilliant. A fair bit of fridge raiding- my lunch was actually eaten at the fridge door I'm ashamed to say, and 90% of my food intake has been pork. Ok as a one off, but it's very processed and too salty for long term.

Tomorrow I have another busy day, although Ds is going out in the afternoon. Dh and I going for a meal at his parents in the evening which are inevitably boozy affairs and so I will probably not manage 800 cals tomorrow!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/10/2019 14:26

Very quiet in here this week, hope everyone is getting on ok?

I have just had a lovely lunch of smoked bacon and fried eggs! Yummy!
Went for a quick run in the rain too.

OP posts:
Fluffywithteeth · 18/10/2019 14:32

oh well done on running in the rain!
All went well on Day 1 - 2 shakes during the day and evening as planned with cod and cauliflower mash with some steamed veggies.

Weighed this monring (am planning to do it every day) and down to 70.2 - obviously all water but still nice to see it move!

Maccalenny · 18/10/2019 17:40

I’ve eaten a lot of cottage pie this week, including mashed potato, so my weight has been up a couple of pounds. Hopefully, now I’ve eaten it all, that will come off again. The lovely chef at work knows that cottage pie is one of my favourite ever things so always makes me a weeks’ worth! It is so worth the temporary gain.

Maccalenny · 18/10/2019 17:41

Glad you are getting on with the shakes alright Fluffy. I tried the chocolate one and just couldn’t stomach it at all.
