Fasting / 5:2 diet

Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Good luck Bear! You do great at this!

My official 1st day starts tomorrow too although things have been ok today, slightly bigger portions, but not bad food & loads of veg.

Tomorrow I'll fast till lunch, then soup for lunch followed by BSD Chicken Korma with cauli rice (a family fave!) Aiming to really be tight with cals this week so I can get through my previous plateau (9lbs from goal!)

Good luck for your restart tomorrow Phoenix. Day 4 yoga was a bit tougher wasn’t it...first day I have worked up a sweat!

I’m back to work tomorrow, so back to 4days 800, 3days uncounted.

Good Luck Bear - I'm back in the office tomorrow and am worrying about fasting until 12 (I've managed this the last few days) - already made my lunch up though so hope that will help.

Double- I am 5'3" and 13st7 so very similar start. Would be happy with a two stone loss too.

Macca- do you find it still effective doing three days at 800?

When I did this before Christmas briefly I used the older BSD diet book and the F800 book. I really like the recipes in them but have bought the full F800 recipe book this week and I'm so glad I did- it's brilliant!! So many nice recipes and a really nice big glossy book.

@Maccalenny Yeah I really liked today's yoga - def felt like more of a stretch too. I've set the alarm to get up at 630 tomorrow morning to do it so hoping it becomes a thing!

Hi Peachy - if I’m strict at 4 days 800, and keep on plan but have around 1200 for the other days, I usually lose 1-2lb a week. I started in Feb, and moved onto this sort of plan in June/July. In school holidays I don’t really count at all, so my weight plateaus. But it starts dropping again when back at work...like it will this week hopefully.
I’ve got less than a stone to go now so am happy to take my time. Then I’m hoping to carry on a couple of days a week at 800, to ensure maintenance and to get the benefits of fasting.

Phoenix you are good to get the yoga done first thing - I just can’t do yoga in the mornings! I’m always achy when I wake up, the house is cold, I’m thinking about the day at work....I’d really like to exercise in the morning as I know the science says it is more effective, but I’m just not inclined to at all. Hope today’s is good!

After my calorie blowout and lack of activity yesterday, I have still managed to lose another pound so I’m five pounds down in five days. So relieved - this early on, a gain would have been a bit demoralising even if I did deserve it! And in two more pounds, I’ll break through the stone barrier which I think will be very motivating.

I also slept eight and a half hours last night so feel much better equipped to get back on track today!

Day 5 for me today and I’m down 0.7kg. I am a bit disappointed (but not surprised) by the relatively slow loss as I only have 2kg to lose to get back to my target weight. I may have been under-recording my calories over the last couple of days but I think I have stuck to 800-900 calories. Back at work today and les opportunity to snack. Hope everyone has a good day.

As predicted I have maintained these last few days (although did weigh myself after a pint of water and a coffee so may have lost 1lb?) but anyway, recording starting weight as 10.12.5 (which yes, does mean my gain for December was about 7lbs Blush) I think I I needed it though. I'd been struggling to stay on track and failing miserably for most of October and November, so actually having a complete break (both from diet and exercise really) has done me good. My leg feels stronger than it has for ages and is pain free day to day although still hurts a bit while running. It's testament to how little exercise I'd done in December that I'm still aching all over after bootcamp on Saturday, proper DOMS and I've not had that for a while!

Anyway, onwards into today. All planned. Have a great day everyone! ^^

Well, I’ve finally lost! Now 11st 10lb
BUT I’m sat in Costa with a bloody latte at 9am!!! It’s not even a skinny one! What happened to fasting til midday?! Dropped my youngest off for her 11+ entrance exam and thought I’d hit the sales before I go back to get her but nothing opens til 930!! This latte is lush though!!

To be fair @KImlek a full fat latte is what? 200 cals- but high fat (which is good) , lower carb than a skinny one, and is basically a meal replacement shake. Treat it as a meal, you'll be fine. Grin

So to fill up the last 8 posts, how about this:

  1. what's your best 'on the go' food item if you have to grab something quickly while you're out?
  2. what's your favourite 'quick tea'?

Mine is 1) Morrison's do a chicken houmous salad that is just leaves, chicken and a houmous pot- completely BSD friendly!
  3. creamy mushrooms - sauté some mushrooms and garlic, get a tub of soft cheese (full fat), mix the soft cheese into the mushrooms and add some real cheese as well, stir round. Serve with green veg as a main course or as a pour over sauce for chicken, steak or gammon.

Oooh I’ve no idea what my go to grab is yet... or my fave quick tea... hence all the batch cooking. Albeit I do live cottage cheese, pear & walnuts. Also love apple & peanut butter but find it hard to stop!
bear it was an accidental meal replacement as I’ve eaten nothing all day since the latte - only water & another coffee has passed my lips as simply whizzing about and didn’t get chance to eat lunch. I’m now starving!! About to put the cottage pie with sweet potato mash in the oven. Need to be careful that I don’t have a humungous portion!!

Favourite grab meal....Asda do some gorgeous mini peppers stuffed with houmous. Whole tub is about 16g carb and 250 cal.

Favourite quick tea.....anything egg-based, or defrosted frozen raspberries with natural yoghurt and sprinkle of seeds.

They sound good @Maccalenny . Are they on the tapas range? In fact, most stores' tapas selection is usually pretty good and great for if you fancy a Friday night graze rather than a full meal. Halloumi chunks and chorizo chunks fried together? Yes please!!
