Jumping on the 800m bandwagon. I've just found out DS has to be at the pool tomorrow at 4 for a 4:20 warm up and a 5:20 start to the 800m event. Problem is he doesnt get in from school until 3:30. Luckily the pool is less than 5 minutes drive away.

BUT what to do with food? He doesnt eat rice or pasta so normally has chicken wraps for lunch on gala days so I was going to give him these when ge got in from school but apparently protein takes a long time to digest and I think the timings are too tight.

Glittertwins · 18/01/2024 20:00

Put a hot meal into a food flask for him to eat at lunch time. Then he can have malt loaf/dried fruit/flapjack according to timings after school.

Could do something like fish/ chicken/ mash potatoes / sliced veg in a flask.
Quick mash is 10 mins jacket potato in microwave and then mash with butter/milk in a bowl afterwards

@Glittertwins thank you. He refuses to eat anything but school lunches at school. It was more between school and the gala starting I was thinking of. His solution is chocolate spread sandwiches which to be fair is his solution to everything, I wonder if that would be ok?

Glittertwins · 18/01/2024 20:22

Well it will have plenty of carbohydrates in it which he'll need more than protein before a race. As long as it's easily digested as his body needs to race rather than digest food.

Could you add a banana to that choc spread sandwich (on the side)? Or a fruit smoothie?

Hellocatshome · 19/01/2024 05:44

Well he will have has some raspberries/strawberries and blue berries as well which I guess is like a smoothie but not blitzed up. Its like he reads the 'what a swimmer should eat book' then refuses to eat any of it 🙈

Hellocatshome · 19/01/2024 20:03

So in the end it was out of my control and he had coco pops, a rice cake and some berries. He did get a 24 second PB thought so what do I know.

Glittertwins · 19/01/2024 20:17

It's almost annoying Eur they do that!!!
Well done to him

Came to see if you'd reported how he did.

Smashed it 🌟🌟🌟

Porseb · 19/01/2024 21:41

Amazing time drop 🙌🏼

itsgettingweird · 20/01/2024 16:37

Ds completed his first ever 800m LC at counties today 😂😂😂 and yes it was hard as I prepped him to expect it to be!

But he did a great time and came 7th. Not bad for an S9 swimmer in an AB open age category!

Well not one to make things easy both the first and last 400m of his 800m were faster than what he managed in the actual 400m event. I give up trying to predict anything he does.

Porseb · 23/01/2024 23:00

That's fab - will give him the confidence to know he can go a faster 400 when he next swims one.

Eccle80 · 26/01/2024 12:21

Sounds like a great swim. And at least he knows when he next does a 400 that he definitely is capable of a PB.

Anyone else got counties this weekend? Good luck if so. We’re there all weekend, I think both of mine are putting a bit of pressure on themselves with what they hope to achieve. Youngest has a busy schedule with most of his strongest events, he has potential to do really well, but I’m a bit worried it could go either way for him as you never know what other swimmers will do, and he does have some history of unfortunate DQs in his best events too.

Madcats · 26/01/2024 12:33

Somerset looks to be getting 2 weekends of Counties at the end of February half term and mid March! Hopefully the pool will be fixed by then (though the dates don't work for us, annoyingly. We've had about 10% of swimmers pull out).

It feels a bit odd not having these empty weekends in January and February.

Good luck to those due to compete.

Glittertwins · 26/01/2024 13:00

Hope it is sorted soon, those are late dates and especially clashing with half term

OP posts:
Eccle80 · 26/01/2024 13:51

That’s good news if they have managed to find new dates, but a shame for those who will now miss out. Mid march is very late though and likely to clash with other meets clubs may already have entered

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2024 16:00

Yeah agree it's great to have dates but a shame they don't work out.

No more counties for us as ds gave it a miss bar the 800m as he flies to Aberdeen next Wednesday for the world para series.

Then he has either his Easter meet or British Champs dependent on him being invited.

Think he'll do regionals May BH weekend.

Eccle80 · 26/01/2024 17:19

Good luck to him for Aberdeen, hope it goes well

Porseb · 26/01/2024 18:06

Good luck to your DC swimming this weekend @Eccle80

Mine's swimming an 800 first thing tomorrow - first time in about 7 / 8 years

Swam at Flanders Cup last weekend and won some prize money 😬

Eccle80 · 26/01/2024 18:14

Wow that’s brilliant! Good luck for the 800 tomorrow
