NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

My DD (15) has been offered a place on a skills workshop. As this is all very new to us I have no idea if that’s a good thing or not.

Will they later be open to anyone to join or just auditionees that didn’t get offered a recall?

The email says she’ll be a part of NYMT Company 2024 but I’m not sure how that works if there’s no performance and everyone who doesn’t get a recall is paying to just be in the skills workshop?

I’m confused more than anything else 😂

Any insights much appreciated!

Biscuitsneeded · 12/02/2024 20:32

@OldBrum Here's my understanding, pasted from a previous post:

The skills workshops are offered to everyone who auditions and who NYMT doesn't consider as (yet) quite ready for a show or a new musicals workshop. The workshops replace the old Easter and summer courses, but by taking part the young person is a member of NYMT and may be invited to take part in some other performances during the year as I understand it.

Thank you @Biscuitsneeded - I’m still a little unsure if absolutely everyone who auditions gets offered a skills workshop ( if they’re not recalled) or just some auditionees who are ‘not quite ready‘ and so some auditionees are offered nothing.

I hope that makes sense

Biscuitsneeded · 12/02/2024 20:39

@OldBrum I don't know for sure but I think everyone is offered the skills workshop.

Hello @muckymayhem and welcome to the thread. Congratulations to your DD on her recall! What is she recalled for? It's a real achievement to get a recall but sadly not everyone will get placed in a show. Of those recalled for the main shows, some will get a show, some may be offered a new musicals workshop and I think it's still possible some people won't get either of those but may get invited to the skills workshop. But having jumped the first hurdle there's a reasonable chance of getting something. If she's recalled for a specific show she's very unlikely to end up in one of the others, so you can have some idea of the dates she might be busy, and hopefully you'll know for sure before too long.
Tell her not to be too nervous about the recall. Easier said than done, I know. If she can print off any music she might be asked to sing it would be good- try to learn the melody. And if there is script she shoukd be familiar with it but I think no need to learn it unless it says so. Every show will ask for different things, so read the letter and make sure she understands what she needs to prepare. The teams are always very friendly and the atmosphere is supportive. I'm sure she'll enjoy it - break a leg to her!

Hello @Biscuitsneeded & everyone else. Joined this thread ages ago but have been quiet as DDs audition wasn't until Saturday. Completely new to all this and know nothing apart from what I can read on the website, so a couple of questions if anyone can answer (& apologies if they have already been answered I've scrolled back but can't find!)

She has a recall next weekend. Does this mean she will be offered a part in a production for sure? (Selfishly I want to sort a family holiday so I'm trying to keep clear of dates etc)

Anything she should particularly be aware of or tips for preparation? She's 17 so getting all the emails directly my chief role is driving about and asking annoying questions! She hasn't done any auditions outside of school either so we are both a bit clueless.

Thanks!

Hi @muckymayhem and welcome!

The recalls are for those that they are considering for roles and ensemble for the specific shows. Your DD will have been told which show(s) she is being considered for. For anyone unsuccessful at the recall, it sounds as if this year all participants will be offered a skills workshop instead, as reported by our resident oracle known as @Biscuitsneeded.

In terms of preparation, I would suggest that you look at the emails with your DD if you can, because they do contain quite detailed instructions about how to prepare for the recall. Hopefully she will enjoy the process whatever the outcome. My DS says the audition process is fun and he has learned a lot. Good luck for the weekend!

Haha, I crossed over with you @Biscuitsneeded 😂

@Operasingerkath ooh, oracle, I like that. It's an improvement on 'been around far too long' or in fact, old.
I'm very lucky that my DS has had so many happy NYMT experiences and I'm more than happy to help the newbies where and when I can because I want other young people to enjoy the same wonderful experiences that he has.

Well I for one am very glad you and this thread are here!

muckymayhem · 12/02/2024 22:17

@Operasingerkath @Biscuitsneeded

Brilliant! Thanks both - this makes more sense! She's been told she's auditioning for Into The Woods and she's now told me what is in the email so has to choose which characters / songs to do from each list. She would LOVE to be in it so I will try not to be annoying and let her crack on - I can see we will have it blasting all week but will be a welcome break from listening to Hamilton. (Didn't do that for the audition, she just plays it constantly in the car at the minute!).

I will also get on with holiday planning and leave the Woods dates free just in case she's successful :) fingers crossed.

Thanks again & good luck to anyone else's DC going to recalls!

Montimom · 12/02/2024 22:20

Yay for @Biscuitsneeded for sharing all knowledge!! Oracle is kinda cool, if we know anyone organising show hoodies this year we should order you one with ‘NYMT Oracle’ on it 🤪

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2024 10:14

How are all the DC doing? Hope the recallees are feeling ready for the weekend!

Montimom · 16/02/2024 10:29

Have one third of the auditionees here already, two more flying over tonight! Mixed bag of nerves and excitement and that’s Just me 😂 Good luck to all

NCMO2G · 16/02/2024 10:39

@Biscuitsneeded mine is a bit worried as she has a terrible cold and still has three shows to do before Sunday with her local theatre group production then a very long drive to london! I hope she can find a bit of reserve energy and still sing! 😬 good luck to everyone who has call backs tomorrow! 😊

Mcmumager · 16/02/2024 11:21

I hope everyone has a fab time this weekend. @NCMO2G i hope you dd feels ok. I feel like I’m in a constant stress over colds etc so feel your pain. Somehow they normally pull it out the bag than act surprised that we’ve been worrying so much! Advice rest voice when she can ( not easy with a show) , hot water and honey etc and bit if steaming if needed. Ginger shots seem to be helping here but no idea if that’s in his head lol.

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2024 11:56

@NCMO2G sorry to hear about your DD's cold. It's so stressful for them when they can't be their best selves. Has she got a big role in the show she's in, or can she mime some of the singing and save her voice a bit? Still 48 hours - hopefully she'll be feeling a good bit better and also the adrenaline will carry her through.

Operasingerkath · 16/02/2024 13:12

The nerves are kicking in here, more me than DS! Fingers crossed for everyone- hope they all have a great weekend.

Melwingingit · 16/02/2024 13:38

Well it all happens at once! My DC has twisted / bruised her ankle (currently sat with frozen peas on it) and is full of cold with no voice - so it looks like we are going to have to pull out of the casting workshop tomorrow sadly.

Coniger · 16/02/2024 13:41

Good luck everyone. DD not until Sunday and she has definitely got the fear!

Mcmumager · 16/02/2024 13:51

@Melwingingit oh that’s a shame. Depending on how bad it is maybe moving her session to Sunday afternoon would help?

Melwingingit · 16/02/2024 13:58

@Mcmumager she was recalled for both ITTW and OH - and I’m not sure she will be well enough for Sunday. I’m going to email them

Mumster40 · 16/02/2024 14:59

Good luck to all the recall NYMT DC this weekend. It’s horrible when they’re poorly/ injured for auditions. Hope everyone feels better soon x

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2024 15:17

@Melwingingit what rubbish luck. Really sorry to hear it. See what NYMT say. It might be possible to switch to Sunday in case that helps at all.

OP posts:
Melwingingit · 16/02/2024 15:20

@Biscuitsneeded I’ve emailed them and will see but tbh I’m not sure she’ll be well enough for Sunday either. It is what it is I’m afraid - will have to try again next year. What is the maximum age for NYMT do you know?
thanks

Biscuitsneeded · 16/02/2024 15:32

@Melwingingit it goes up to age 23 so she has time! Some of the post 18 colleges don't let their students take part (I'm looking at you, Arts Ed and Mountview!) but fortunately, most do. In fact it's the one non- professional credit they can put on a spotlight CV beside their college grad shows.
