NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

@Melwingingit The theatres haven't been officially announced yet but I think all the shows are in London for 2024 apart from Platform, which is touring to Manchester and Birmingham. This varies from year to year - last year two shows were at Leicester Curve and one at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant, and there was a showcase at the Rose Theatre Kingston. Sometimes a show fits a very specific venue, for example Brass which was about the Leeds Pals in WW1 was done at the Leeds Royal.Armouries, and in 2021 The Hunchback of Notre Dame was performed in Manchester Cathedral. Obviously if successful your daughter would be placed in one, not both, of the shows she has been recalled for, so no clashes!
My DS has his recall on Saturday but he's 18 so he doesn't need me! More than happy to answer any more Qs you have, though. Good luck with the recall materials.

Welcome @Melwingingit and congrats to your dd? Does she attend the college where the auditions were held in West Yorkshire?

Mwingingit · 11/02/2024 11:40

Thank you @Mcmumager

Operasingerkath · 11/02/2024 11:54

Hi @Mwingingit from a fellow northerner! Congratulations to your DD. My DS has the same recalls but for next Sunday’s session. He took part for the first time last year and had an absolute ball. Hope your DD has a good day at her recall -it’s a really good learning experience and fun if a bit nerve wracking! You’re in the right place here for any questions you need answering - everyone is so friendly and helpful.

Melwingingit · 11/02/2024 11:56

@Operasingerkath thank you so much

LibbyRuncie · 11/02/2024 14:11

@Melwingingit also a newbie here! My 12 ye old DD has recall for catastrophe bay on Saturday! I am taking one step at a time and message is enjoy all the opportunities and the call back! What time is your slot Saturday? We’re going down from Derbyshire so not too bad but then afterwards driving to Scotland to see grandparents so long weekend ahead!

Youarenotseriouspeople · 11/02/2024 14:42

Hi @Melwingingit we are also first timers. My DD is travelling down next Saturday for the recalls also from West Yorks but there is works on the line from Wakefield (!) so she's going from Sheffield. I'm not travelling with her though because she is staying down because she has a uni audition on Monday. I'm hoping that i don't have to be there actually as she is not 18 til next month - does anyone know if parents are expected to accompany?

Mcmumager · 11/02/2024 14:45

Hi @Youarenotseriouspeople parents don’t need to be there.

Melwingingit · 11/02/2024 14:53

@LibbyRuncie
Hi, thanks for your reply. Slot at 1pm -3.30. Then 4-6.30 - I’m going to drive down so will be a long day- don’t envy you driving to Scotland from London!

LibbyRuncie · 11/02/2024 15:58

@Melwingingitmight see you there then! DD slot is the 4.00-6.30 one too! Then up to Carlisle for an overnight pit stop and onwards to north east of Scotland Sunday! It’s going to be gutting as we’ll practically pass our house on the way to Carlisle from London! 😂 DD looking forward to the slot, she loved the full day audition!

Mwingingit · 11/02/2024 16:45

@LibbyRuncie oh at least you have a stop off.

I’ll be carrying a red rose!! 😁
See you there

Hi all, new to NYMT here. I have a question. We are currently overseas so were told we could do a video submission. Does anyone know how they handle these? Looks like no-one has even looked at my DD's submission despite following their instructions faithfully. I see some people here have been hearing about call backs. I have followed up with NYMT but now I am concerned - is there a disadvantage with video submissions? Should we have got on a plane for the workshop auditions? DD takes this very seriously.
TIA for hearing your experiences!

Biscuitsneeded · 11/02/2024 21:37

@KookyBear I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that. If you were told your DD could do a video submission then it must be OK, but if I were you I would email again. Were you anticipating flying over for any potential recall, in which case I can appreciate you definitely need some sort of news ASAP, or would they be judging purely on the basis of the video submission, in which case you might not hear back until the recalls are done? For what it's worth (and I'm not at all technical), I have been told you can't always tell whether or how many times a video has been viewed, because there's way of downloading it that then doesn't show the views. I don't know if it's true; it's just what I've been told.

My DC really enjoyed the workshop recall today!! Said everyone was so nice and it was great fun 🥰

KookyBear · 12/02/2024 07:07

@Biscuitsneeded thanks yes I have emailed them. They did say they would get back by the end of last week so we are a bit confused. Good point about the downloads. I will keep fingers crossed. Congratulations to everyone who is doing the callback!

Biscuitsneeded · 12/02/2024 08:11

@Montimom So pleased to hear it went well! I wonder if you will have to wait till after next weekend's other recalls have happened for news for this weekend's DC? @Mumster40 I hope your DC also had a good time and came out happy.

Mumster40 · 12/02/2024 08:27

They did thanks! They said everyone was lovely! They were still a bit gutted not to be in the running for a show this year though! The fact that they didn't work on anything from any of the three new musicals was rather odd too….We shall see. Waiting on BYMT audition results now too. Good luck to everyone for next weekend. I have another family member recalled for CB so will be joining the chat!

Montimom · 12/02/2024 10:02

@Biscuitsneeded yes I wonder!! We will be in the waiting room with the other 3 anyway so what’s one more 😂

Biscuitsneeded · 12/02/2024 10:05

@Mumster40 Glad it went well. It's tough on your DC. I'm sure they will get a BYMT show and fingers crossed they will be back in an NYMT show before too long. And fingers crossed for the other family member!

Comefromaway · 12/02/2024 12:11

I apologise if this has been covered before but can anyone tell me how BYMT works in terms of rehearsals. Say, for example you were chosen for a show in August. With NYMT you would rehearse a week at Easter, a week in August then show week (with a few days further rehearsal at the start of the week.

Is BYMT similar or is it just rehearsals in August?

Mcmumager · 12/02/2024 12:26

@Comefromaway someone asked this question- the responses start page 15 🙂

Comefromaway · 12/02/2024 13:34

Thanks

DD got the offer of a skills workshop after her NYMT audition yesterday. I’m not sure she’ll want to do that. I haven’t told her yet as I wanted to find out a bit more about it first. Does anyone know anything about these workshops? Does everyone who doesn’t pass the audition, as it were, get one? Am I right in thinking they’re new? I couldn’t see any information about where they’ll be taking place either. Does anyone know? I’m thinking we’d prefer non-residential but does that mean my DD would miss out for f everyone else is staying there? TIA

Biscuitsneeded · 12/02/2024 18:45

The skills workshops are offered to everyone who auditions and who NYMT doesn't consider as (yet) quite ready for a show or a new musicals workshop. The workshops replace the old Easter and summer courses, but by taking part the young person is a member of NYMT and may be invited to take part in some other performances during the year as I understand it. If it's an Easter course it's most likely to be at Sevenoaks School, and the venue for the summer residentials hasn't been announced yet. All the courses and shows are residential - they do long hours and even if they did allow anyone to be non-resident I think they would miss out on a lot. My DS went to his first Easter residential aged 11 years and 2 weeks; he was a bit nervous (as was I!) but he had the time of his life, and the pastoral care is excellent. For what it's worth, people generally really enjoy the skills courses and come away feeling they have learnt a lot.

Hello @Biscuitsneeded & everyone else. Joined this thread ages ago but have been quiet as DDs audition wasn't until Saturday. Completely new to all this and know nothing apart from what I can read on the website, so a couple of questions if anyone can answer (& apologies if they have already been answered I've scrolled back but can't find!)

She has a recall next weekend. Does this mean she will be offered a part in a production for sure? (Selfishly I want to sort a family holiday so I'm trying to keep clear of dates etc)

Anything she should particularly be aware of or tips for preparation? She's 17 so getting all the emails directly my chief role is driving about and asking annoying questions! She hasn't done any auditions outside of school either so we are both a bit clueless.

Thanks!
