What is it with this fashion? Pulled up white socks!

For decades, the pulled up white sports sock was the preserve of the middle aged American dad who was a stranger to fashion (I used to work with American tourists), and that's not something that I'll ever be able to get over I think.

I could get on board with a statement sock perhaps, in a nice complementary or contrasting colour, but Gen Z seem to be phobic of colour.

A statement sock 😂 I love it!

I have a hard and fast rule that I'll never wear anything that will be ridiculed in years to come (my 90s purple unitard is the exception, I rocked that look in the 'popmobility' classes)

Im currently wearing my white socks to the gym , pulled up but not overpulled l’m 55 btw

What's with the scorn for trainer socks? Not necessarily on this thread but I see it about and I don't get it? I don't mean not finding them comfortable, that I get, but as if they're some kind of absolute fashion disaster? I think trainers look much nicer with a bit of ankle rather than a 90s American tourist pulled up sock.. the fact that EVERYONE in the gym has slowly but surely moved onto these socks makes me want to resist too of course Grin

Soonenough · 30/04/2025 19:23

I wore these and thought I was like John McEnroe ..

I adore the pulled up sock look. It looks cosy and makes me think of kids from fame or flashdance as it gives leg warmer vibes. I'd be all over it myself if it wasn't for fear of mutton dressed as lamb vibes (gen x).

Well I’m gen x and have always worn my socks like this. For the last 30 years people have been looking aghast at my sock covered ankles. Now I’m suddenly trendy but people probably think I’m copying the young ones! 😀

Andoutcomethewolves · 30/04/2025 19:31

There are worse trends.

I give you 'being a dickhead's cool', an excellent summary of all the terrible fashions from 2010. Including loafers with no socks. Surely any socks are an improvement??

It’s the changing of terminology I don’t understand. So to me ankle socks are normal socks, they cover the ankles. Trainer socks are the ones which aren’t visible/barely visible when wearing trainers.

but gen z seem to call trainer socks ankle socks. I think they call ankle socks crew socks 🤷‍♀️

To be fair I'm still wearing skinny jeans so I'm a lost cause to fashion!

Your trainer socks are already being ridiculed though...

Today I saw a group of teenage girls with sensible trainers, socks pulled up, knee length shorts and baggy t shirts. They looked so comfortable - it was glorious, long may this trend continue!

That's a lovely fashion tbh. My colleague has a young daughter and she's wearing baggy jeans ✅

Oh I do love "Adam Sandler aesthetic" as I've seen it called 😆

love those, wore them as a teenager when everyone was going through the pop punk/skater look in the 00s

FunkyMonks · 30/04/2025 20:56

Prefer the pulled up sock look or the scrunched up sock look ankle socks are ok for certain trainers and outfit looks but in truth I hate them they always end up slipping off my feet and then I have to take my trainers off to pull them back over my feet I also find that if you do find tight fitting ankle socks they make my ankle look puffy like I have no ankle just a fat stump that my foot is attached too 😂😂.. I’m a Millennial.

FunkyMonks · 30/04/2025 20:58

Sorry I’m referring to trainer socks is what I had not ankle socks that come up over the ankle those I don’t mind it’s trainer socks I hate 😂

FrangipaniBlue · 30/04/2025 23:07

Awaits the return of slouch socks.

@BogRollBOGOF

I've just bought some from Under Armour!

Itsoneofthose · 30/04/2025 23:08

@PollyCreo the scrunch bum leggings are obscene

NoThankYouSis · 30/04/2025 23:14

I do a pulled up sock. Trainer socks were the bane of my life for running, they’d always roll down and I’d have heel blisters or toes sticking out of the little elastic court shoe socks I used to buy, they were a nightmare. I’m old enough to enjoy a bit of comfort instead now!

PollyCreo · 30/04/2025 23:27

Itsoneofthose · 30/04/2025 23:08

There's no need for them. We all go to the gym to work out, no one wants to see arse cheeks or bollocks on show.

gosh once you start wearing them there is no going back to trainer socks.

I have embraced the shortie ankle (so a bit pulled up but not that high, like 3inches) and also the longer tube sock which i mostly wear under jeans but occasionally pulled up over leggings if it is cold (for exercise not streetwear).

My ankles have had a lovely warm winter and they thank me for it.

I am Gen X if it matters

Me too and technically I am a boomer!

SweetySalt · 01/05/2025 08:56

Why is it that the socks have to be over the leggings though? My DD just eye rolled me for untucking my socks from my leggings.
Why is over apparently the height of fashion and under is 🙄
