What is it with this fashion? Pulled up white socks!

I’m a millennial- love scrunch bum leggings. Do wear white socks but would feel a bit old pulling them up like my Gen Z daughter!

tbf lots of gen z trends seem to be aimed towards comfort/practicality

trainers with nice dresses to go out rather than stiletto heels, normalising wearing athleisure to almost everywhere, baggy jeans are way more comfortable than skinny ones, etc.

So true! Kudos to Gen Z!

(although they can keep their scrunch bum)

lavendarwillow · 28/04/2025 22:56

I think men look way better with a proper crew sock, it gives me the ick to see their ankles with trainers socks.

wastingtimeonhere · 28/04/2025 22:59

Even worse is the cut socks! Holes everywhere, why, just why!

WingingItSince1973 · 28/04/2025 23:00

I actually like the look and my user name shows my age 🤣

scalt · 29/04/2025 07:08

Thinking about trainer trends when I was at secondary school in the 90s, lots of us went sockless with trainers in summer: if you were brave, you did so for PE as well. Backless trainers were fashionable then as well, so you could see there were no invisible socks.

Also, some people tied the laces inside the shoes, to avoid the bows on the outside, and sometimes this meant trainers were so loose that their unsocked heels would appear with every step.

Pulled up socks are great, so comfortable and practical when you're exercising. I mean, how else are sports socks supposed to be worn? Carefully arranged slouch around the ankle? Folded over?

They have to be folded over down to the ankle because they're not wide enough to be pulled up without losing circulation in my bountiful soleus and gastrocnemius Grin

I couldn't be bothered with the pretending I wasn't wearing socks thing. They always slipped under my heels after a few steps anyway.

The trick to keeping bowless laces on was to knot them before tucking the ends back in the trainer.

Scabber · 29/04/2025 16:19

It took me a while but I now love the pulled up sock!!! Makes such a difference to keeping warm too. Did worry about being 40 trying to look 20 but then decided I didn't care 😂

PollyCreo · 30/04/2025 16:01

There's just something about the look, it's like their mothers have told them to pull their socks up 😅

I'm a Gen X and remember that fashion around 15 years ago where women wore joggers in the gym with just one leg hoiked up 😳😭

Createausernametoday2 · 30/04/2025 16:11

looks good imo, ankle socks meh

PollyCreo · 30/04/2025 16:31

I really enjoy reminiscing about fitness fashions and fads from back in the day, it's interesting how things have evolved over the past 30 years.

There was a very odd thing I remember from the early 90s - toning tables 🤯

I adore the pulled up sock look. It looks cosy and makes me think of kids from fame or flashdance as it gives leg warmer vibes. I'd be all over it myself if it wasn't for fear of mutton dressed as lamb vibes (gen x).

You are never too old to wear whatever you want x

abracadabra1980 · 30/04/2025 16:35

The sock thing doesn't offend me, but caused me to guffaw in horror when I saw an old acquaintance of mine sporting the look publicly. He's 57 🤣

MyIvyGrows · 30/04/2025 16:38

I love how trainer socks look but you need decent ones, especially for exercise. The cheap 5-pack ones always seem to slide off inside my shoe. Don’t have that issue with ankle socks; I’m less keen on wearing them with trainers and leggings but they’re essential for wearing with Docs etc.

The Gen Zs can just about get away with it but God no, not 50 somethings 🫣

Fashion is just what young people choose that is awful enough that the oldies won’t copy.
hence socks, hence mullet, hence thong etc

FrenchandSaunders · 30/04/2025 16:51

oh dear I'm 57 and wear pulled up socks to the gym .... didn't know I was making such a faux pas

Stellaris22 · 30/04/2025 16:57

I’m close to 40 and have been doing the pulled up sock look for years, it’s comfy and I think it looks good.

It sure would be nice if women could exercise in gyms without women staring and judging, too bad we’re not allowed to say ‘be kind’ but judging women’s appearances is fine.

HelenHywater · 30/04/2025 16:59

I'm gen x and have embraced it too. In fact I have always worn long socks over leggings. Trainer socks are so uncomfortable always slipping under my feet.

I haven't embraced scrunch bum leggings.

Ah come on, we're just teasing the youngsters. And young men wear the mid calf socks too 😏

Yes to all this and oh my god, did my trainers stink!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/04/2025 17:44

@HelenHywater- now I’m sure you have a fabulous arse, but if it’s more fat than muscle, the scrunched bum leggings offer support. Think of them as a sports bra for the arse.

thehorsesareallidiots · 30/04/2025 17:45

I'm 42 and on team Proper Sock in the gym. I have some from Myprotein.

IcedLattei · 30/04/2025 17:49

I'm 1996. I used to wear trainers socks but I actually prefer the pulled-up sock look now. Trainer socks are more prone to slip off, plus I like matching the sock colours to my outfit! I don't like it when a little bit of skin pokes out the bottom of leggings with ankle socks.

crackofdoom · 30/04/2025 17:54

For decades, the pulled up white sports sock was the preserve of the middle aged American dad who was a stranger to fashion (I used to work with American tourists), and that's not something that I'll ever be able to get over I think.

I could get on board with a statement sock perhaps, in a nice complementary or contrasting colour, but Gen Z seem to be phobic of colour.
