Really , really unfit 58 year old wanting to start getting fitter ! Where to start ?

tigger55 · 25/09/2024 13:07

That's it really !
All the pretending to myself that I am doing a bit of exercise is no good !

Spotify play list sorted and then the plan was (which I have tried out a bit !)

Walking /bit of power speed walking /walking ...

2 or 3 jogs (🤣 need to get a new bra sorted !)

And repeat ...

And build up...

I can be quite motivated when I put my mind to it.

Don't think classes or apps are my thing at the moment.

Gave up smoking a few months ago .

Is this how others have started ?

Thanks .

I have invented a new fitness thing!! It's called Chorus Training and you walk normal pace during the verse and then as fast as you possibly can / or run for the chorus. Then repeat.

You can do it anywhere, it's really effective and it's really good fun!

Rainbowqueeen · 25/09/2024 22:46

Yes you can walk and run in running shoes. Please invest in some good ones from a proper sports shop. Same with a sports bra. Just go and try a bunch on. Jump up and down in the change room and see what works.

Walking is a fantastic way to start. I suggest trying to mix things up. It keeps things interesting and the motivation high. Plus things like stretching and strength work all work together so you get more out of the cardio.

Also if you don't have time for a walk, a 10 minute yoga class will make you feel good and like you are still doing something.

There are lots of great classes on youtube if you dont want to go to a gym or class. Look at yoga with adrienne, yoga with kassandra, charlie follows. I also do handweights with mikfit on youtube.

Best of luck with your exercise journey.

I'm 52 and looking after a golden retriever and have lost 2 pounds in 10 days and feel much fitter

thats 2 x fast 45 min walks a day approximately. I mean it would be slower but not only is he massive he's also STRONG and pulls me along even with his halti 😂

so my recommendation is get a big strong dog haha

Ichangedmynameonce · 25/09/2024 22:55

@TravelInsuranceQ would love to hear whst you did please?
I'm in same position.....bad knees, 2 stone to lose and I'm unfit and 50. I'm working on the weight ahd it's going down but how to get fit? My knees are bad

tigger55 · 25/09/2024 23:20

Ok...
I am thinking walking build up is my route at the moment ...without the dog @FuckThePoPo 🤣!

I have had some fractures of my bones ....spine , kneecap , chipped toe and the like !

I like the changing it up the pace to the chorus of the song ..@FusionChefGeoff ....I can be focused ...but not really focused!

Good walking shoes are going to be investigated next week.

Bra ...cos I need a sensible one !
I know for a fact that I will not be able to put on an all in one bra type thing .

Need fastenings....sort of like normal bra .

Terraine is not pavement.
It is sort of a private road/country lane feel .

Makes me feel good.
Slight incline up ...
Easier on the way home.

I could increase my cardio/vascular bit of it by carrying a rucksack with a small weight in it ?

Not yet obviously!

I have small hand dumbbells things.

Think the 5k part will come in the spring if I survive till then 🤣

But sensible , sensible has to be my motto for now.

No weight to loose ...apart from the wine and sugar belly .

Just more concerned I don't give myself a heart attack in the process of getting fitter ...

When I said I was unfit ...I really meant it ...
I would get out of breath just changing the sheets and quilt on a double bed 😞.

This thread has given me so much motivation though...so thank you all for taking the time to comment.

Went out the window tonight though as had to take DC to doctors for emergency appointment, so that is why I need to control my time and pace myself.

I started by going swimming and now also do Pilates, yoga and Zumba for over 50s, I've also joined slimming world and have lost 2st and 2lb loving to journey and enjoying having me time and obviously getting fitter.
Also sometimes if I can't get to class do a Joe wicks workout for older people or beginners.

tigger55 · 25/09/2024 23:21

Just to confirm....

No sexy push up bras then when I embark on this new journey 🤣🤩

Copperoliverbear · 25/09/2024 23:23

HOKA trainers are the most comfortable I've had. X

tigger55 · 25/09/2024 23:24

Joe Wicks is a Sadist ! 🤣...

We did try him " then " ....he scares the life out of me .

I suppose I could try him at 1/2 speed ?

Don’t know where you are but you could maybe see if your local authority or health board has an aging well program, usually subsidised activities for over 50’s. Locally to me includes walking groups and yoga.
You might not fancy classes at first but they are a great way to get motivated and establish a routine.

tigger55 · 25/09/2024 23:34

Ohh @eatreadsleeprepeat ...thank you.

I have appointment with the smoking nurse soon...I will ask .

I improved my fitness at 64, but I needed groups to do it. I piddled about trying to do it on my own previously but it would always dwindle off after the first burst of enthusiasm.

Pilates and Keep Fit once a week each, walking group once a month, plus met a walking buddy at that group and we walk independently of the group most weeks.

Buying stuff won’t make you fit.

Sign up for Parkrun..... It's free, no expensive fitness gear required and importantly, rest assured you do not have to run. Many people do a Parkwalk, and the lovely thing is, you will NEVER be last no matter how slow you do it. The official tail walkers (usually with their dogs) stroll along at the back.
Such an utterly inspiring range of participants all ages, sizes, abilities/disabilities.
I've been doing it for a year since having to regain the ability to walk after MS relapse and, as you can tell, I'm just a bit in love with the whole concept. I'm incredibly slow, but have started jogging now. I feel fabulous every Saturday morning 😊

tigger55 · 26/09/2024 00:59

I have gone a bit queasy now..
I looked up my nearest Parkrun ....

2 obstacles in my way already ...without even factoring how I get to them as I don't drive ...

Saturday's ....

9AM ......

🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😅🤣🥰🥰...

Nahh !

I am sure they are a lovely wonderful community to belong to ....

But .....

I don't think my fitness and stamina levels are up to put the kettle for my tea at whatever time I would have to do it for !

...I think I may have missed off ...very very Lazy from my profile !

Walking. Just half an hour to start with, round your local streets. In 6 months, I've gone from doing this to 1.5 hrs per day (mental health improvements!) to practically skipping up.Snowdon with ease and good hiking days in the Toen Shen mountains - my only exercise is walking local streets.

tigger55 · 26/09/2024 01:29

I think now I may be getting myself muddled with distance over time .

The route I want to do ...and know I am capable (ish) of doing with a 2 week introduction to be gentle....is 2 miles .
(3.6?? Km )

Slight incline up ...nice down ...

Walked down it with even easing an eye brow...
If I had to get to the top of the road...
Yeah ...I would wait for the bus.

So my plan is....
Build up to this lovely road.
(I can always bring my card and get bus home !!)

That should take me 40 mins max.

(Ok...50 ...if I start to get a bit tired and slow on the way back)

So do I measure my self on distance or time...or just doing the flipping thing in the first place 😅.

I know I am overthinking now.

On the days when the weather is really bad look on YouTube for ‘get fit with Rick’ as he does walking workouts.

tigger55 · 26/09/2024 01:48

Ohh ..
And I thought I could watch Netflix on the really bad weather days 😅
