If you use Strava what would you think….

if you’re a regular on Strava and you seen someone who never posts start posting a 1 mile run every day, what would you think?

I’ll post the context after (if anyone cares 🤣) but I’m intrigued to see answers first

You can also set it to have followers but them not see your activity. This can be set for each individual activity

shoppingshamed · 02/05/2024 21:44

Thank you for explaining, I wouldn't want randoms to be notified about my exercise so sounds like it's not an app for me

You can set your activities so only you can see them. You can have followers but they wouldn’t know when you exercise

Netaporter · 02/05/2024 22:19

I downloaded Strava once and instantly received an invite to a ‘SEX club’ apparently I’d get access to group activities (I think we all know what that is code for) discussions, photos and other ‘cool stuff’.

Genuinely have no idea how anyone would think I was in that demographic…I deleted Strava the same day and remain overweight 😂

Trainbother · 02/05/2024 22:47

I'd have no interest at all unless I knew them. If I did, I'd think "nice one".

Come back in 6 months, I bet you'll be doing 10k at least 3 times a week 🤣

Ok thank you for responses.

im quite unfit and really lack consistency & discipline while trying to lose weight and recently stopping smoking. I thought I would run/walk a mike a day and see how I got on. To my surprise I was able to run the full mile but my god I nearly died. Anyway, I have persevered with it. I have no desire to run longer distances and am still slow (10.30min/mile) but I actually feel a bit stupid posting it on Strava. Its such a minuscule distance in comparison to what I see on there and I started thinking people must be thinking why does she bother with / post that

It’s all distance and it all counts to your targets. I’ve been known to track a 2km bike ride to the postoffice to make sure I hit my weekly target!

Seriously, everyone will think you are doing great - and you’re doing a lot better than those who didn’t get off the couch.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 03/05/2024 12:36

Nothing wrong with 10-11 minute miles at all - those are my bread and butter for easy runs, probably clocking 40k of those a week

Make use of the Challenges section too - lots are for time rather than distance so you can gather badges - I still find them motivating and I've been using Strava for a decade 😂

parkrun500club · 03/05/2024 12:40

BovineUniversity · 02/05/2024 21:43

Maybe you're starting a run streak?

That was my thought too. A mile a day for a month.

But if you can do 10.30 pace you'll soon be doing 5k instead.

PieFaces · 03/05/2024 12:49

I’d be supportive!

🤣🤣 that seems like an impossible task but I’ll be sure to report back in 6 months!

I would think "Good for you!" and give you kudos every day but, if you are feeling self conscious about it, either set it so "Only you" can see it, or tick the "Don't publish to Home or Club feeds" so it doesn't appear in other people's news feeds.

That's what I do when I am doing yet another bedtime yoga at gone midnight because I'm trying to do a practice every day but haven't got round to doing a proper one! Grin

Trolleytoken · 05/05/2024 07:00

Honestly, most Strava users are only really interested in their own stats so they check out their own activity, “duty kudos” a few posts and then go back to looking at their own splits. So don’t worry about it! 🤣

10-11 minute miles is walking pace for me... I know because I walk that to get to the kids school. Did you mean that number? I thought Strava was a running app.

10 min miles is 6 miles per hour which would make you an exceptionally fast walker- a brisk walk is considered to be 4 mph. In fact at that pace you’d look quite weird and it would be much more comfortable to jog. Do you mean 10mins/km?

Digestive28 · 05/05/2024 07:30

I find Strava to be unlike other social media - people are lovely! It can be a motivator and when I’ve done C25K people saying well done has encouraged me, and they have been genuinely supportive - all runners start somewhere and runners love to get other people running!

That's such an MN cliche, theres always one who walks at olympic walking race pace 😁

Hedonism · 05/05/2024 07:34

10-11 minute miles is definitely running. It would give you a 5k time of just over 30 minutes.

I wouldn't really give it a second thought, op, I just use Strava to track my own progress.

Rolson77 · 05/05/2024 08:00

I have 7 months to train for a half marathon. I've started at 0.5 miles 3x a week. Going to to 1 mile next week. Quite frankly I'm trying not to get injured or demotivated and couldn't care less what others think (I don't post my run online though as I run from my front door).

Indeed!

I suspect the kids school is much closer than she thinks it is

lljkk · 05/05/2024 10:55

I wouldn't notice, sorry. I keep Strava records for my own reference & sometimes scroll thru my feed to give kudos. But I don't track other people's daily habits & don't look more than a few times a week.

I am bemused by people who track every half mile walk to the shops, but if that's useful to them, fair enough.

Utter rubbish. It's a 31 minute 5k. And you are absolutely not doing that pace walking to school. Unless you are a race walker, or actually running.

Yes. I’m an unusually fast walker , and nowhere near that.

It maybe measured by a man in the old joke, yes, love that's 6inches/a mile 😂

ThreeWheelsGood · 05/05/2024 12:17

Haha yes, sorry, 1km. My bad.

On a complete side note, I idly googled race walking and was astounded to find that the WR race walking 5K was 20 minutes! That’s my 5K PB running! (Many, many years ago…) I can’t imagine walking at that pace.
