Gentle and Beginners Workouts

Does anyone fancy a thread about nice gentle workout videos?

I’m hypermobile, so I’m often carrying an injury and finding ways to exercise around them. I’m mid-fifties, so I’m not really aiming for hour-long plyometrics workouts.

I found Jessica Smith years ago, her account is my safe place to go to.

I found this account GoSimpli when I sprained my ankle and wanted to do some seated workouts. She is a lovely Canadian who was diagnosed with osteoporosis, so her workouts are very safe.

This is a new one for me Improved Health, but her after dinner walks have already become a habit. Lots of strength and indoor walking workouts.

@flipflop76 and @Whatineed Brilliant, they’re going on the list.

I really like Lucy Wyndham-Read. Lots of 5/10 minute videos. I’m very unfit.

NevermindNelson · 09/04/2024 09:22

@KatherineHoward thank you, they’re nice looking workouts, but I always get a bit concerned when someone says you can lose two inches of belly fat in seven days. But I also think that any video that gets you up and moving and is enjoyable is a good one.

Could you start with a more gentle one and see if that helps?

Thanks, I am starting with the 7 minutes then do a 5 minute. Then go back later in the day and sometimes choose another one!
Trying to get fit enough to go to gym and do 45 minutes class!
Because I could pre COVID, during COVID I went to work then sat on settee.

Splitting your exercise up and doing ten minutes when you can is as good as doing them all together in one workout. There’s a Jessica Smith that explains this and I just did one to see where she mentions it - I did the wrong one 😅 but no exercise is wasted.

Today’s workout

I just did this Jessica Smith - was trying to find the right comment, but it wasn’t this particular video. Not a problem, I’ll do one every day until I find it 🥵

Even though it doesn’t have the comment I wanted, I think it still applies to us - it’s all in the small details.

I try and do one of Lucy’s 15 minute workouts first thing every morning in my bedroom. Very gentle you can do them in your pyjamas and bare feet. That plus dancing around my room for 5 minutes puts me on about 2,000 steps before I even leave my bedroom.

NevermindNelson · 09/04/2024 10:23

@Wildgeen Thats such a good start to the day - you can face anything if you’ve already got that many steps under your belt.

I did the Lucy Wyndham-Read 6 minute beginner workout today followed by the 5 minute stretch. It was the right level and length and I enjoyed it so I can keep it up.

Will look at the others too. Thank you.

Thanks yeah it gives me a positive boost for the day! I WFH now and often don’t leave the house for days. When I used to commute most mornings would start with a brisk 15 minute walk to catch my train. I have to make more of a conscious effort now to stay active.

Btw, I agree with you being sceptical about the “lose inches off your waist in a week” type titles on some of Lucy W-R videos. I completely ignore that aspect of her videos as it’s just clickbait and focus on moving my body! I quite like her “5 minute reduce blood sugar one” though because it’s designed to be done after eating so it’s really gentle.

I’m going to look for that one. I have about 5 little playlists made.
Love the look of the seated workout, if wasn’t so embarrassing I could do after my lunch at work .

NevermindNelson · 09/04/2024 19:47

@Wildgeen I get you, Jessica Smith did something similar - she titled a video something about bikini bodies, then did a normal workout, explaining throughout that the benefits of exercise are greater than ‘bikini bodies’.

I got used to morning walking videos, but I’m starting to add after dinner ones - there are so many short gentle walk videos that it’s been easy to find something helpful.

Are you overlooked at work? Could you find a quiet place to do something?

OP posts:
KatherineHoward · 09/04/2024 20:32

Definitely overlooked. Very very open plan,

would have to book a room.
I do some little stretches at work because I hunch up at the computer. Also get up every hour or so, because I’m starting to creak and get very stiff.
Working in an office at a desk isn’t good for my health.

NevermindNelson · 09/04/2024 20:44

That Sounds a bit tricky. Could you try and get some extra steps in then do the resistance stuff at home? Or, something like this, broken into smaller chunks -

Did a couple of videos today. Also did a seated one. Bloody hell it was hard work. I thought would be easier!😭

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/04/2024 07:55

I have done 3 days now But skipped this morning as I had to collect DH from the train station at midnight and didn’t want to get up earlier that needed today! Will do it tomorrow as I am enjoying it,

Well done 🥳 Thing is, seated workouts can be harder, because you’re not using leg strength to help you lift, you really have to focus on the muscles you’re working. Keep going.

Three days is brilliant 🥳 The whole point of trying to build a daily habit is that you have enough in the bank on those days you can’t exercise, so you’re already doing it in a useful way.

Today’s workout I like this one because Jessica talks about habit, which is the foundation of continuing exercise. Habit has your back.

Have you thought about weight training OP? I have hEDS and rarely get an injury now because I've built up muscle around the joints. Helps keep them stable.

I'm all for gentle stuff if you're starting out, but if you've been doing the same thing for years and still getting injuries, it might be worth thinking about shaking it up a bit.

Tom Morrison is excellent for those with hyper mobility and gaining strength and stability. Means consistent exercise rather than having to work around an injury often.

In any case, anything that gets you moving is good enough.
