Gentle and Beginners Workouts

NevermindNelson · 02/04/2024 13:01

Does anyone fancy a thread about nice gentle workout videos?

I’m hypermobile, so I’m often carrying an injury and finding ways to exercise around them. I’m mid-fifties, so I’m not really aiming for hour-long plyometrics workouts.

I found Jessica Smith years ago, her account is my safe place to go to.

I found this account GoSimpli when I sprained my ankle and wanted to do some seated workouts. She is a lovely Canadian who was diagnosed with osteoporosis, so her workouts are very safe.

This is a new one for me Improved Health, but her after dinner walks have already become a habit. Lots of strength and indoor walking workouts.

@NevermindNelson thanks so much for posting those workouts, and for starting the thread!
I'm in! 🙂

I quite liked Leslie Sansome. But couldn't quite believe I was doing "core workout for seniors".
All movement is good though, right?

Bluebellsinthewind · 30/04/2024 16:07

@NevermindNelson thanks for this thread and posting the videos. They look fab, going to try them and see how I get on. I am so unfit and overweight so hopefully these will get me started on the right path.

NevermindNelson · 30/04/2024 16:46

@Rae36 I get you, it’s really not as exciting as it should be. But imagine where it can take you, think of the workouts you want to do and this is just your first step. What is your goal, what would you be doing in perfect world?

@Bluebellsinthewind Start gently and see where you get. The best starting place is to build a habit, you can always tweak it afterwards. Good luck 🙂

I started yesterday with the one mile walk and talk.
I thought it would be a breeze, I walk far longer than that with my dogs, but 16 minutes brisk walking was so much harder than an hour stop and start for constant "sniff" stops!

NevermindNelson · 06/05/2024 10:37

@CherryogDog that’s really interesting, it must be the difference between focusing on your exercise and gentle pottering. Well done for getting started 🙂

It all got a busy here, so I’m leaning on ready-made programmes. This one is a good start - it doesn’t have to be done over seven days and you can repeat days if that’s what feels right, you could do the first ten minutes - it’s all about building the habit of doing something.

Let’s get Day One started 🏃🏻‍♀️

I lost motivation with the hot weather but I did the first workout in the series you posted @NevermindNelson ,
Oh my, I'm just so unfit!
Thanks again for posting the links.

NevermindNelson · 16/05/2024 15:33

Well done for starting @CherryogDog

I'll let you into a secret - motivation isn't a fuel, it's the thing you want.

Motivation isn't a force that gets you up off the sofa - habit is better at that.

Motivation is the thing that exercise will get you - if you could see the perfect outcome of exercising, what would it look like - think about that and that's your motivation.

@NevermindNelson long story short, about 8 years ago I was pushing 14stone, desperately unfit and facing major surgery.
I knew that I'd struggle to recover, and it was like a light switch flicked on in my brain.
The day I went into surgery, 5 months later, I was 8stone 10lbs, fit and toned.
I recovered really well, kept up my fitness then life ruined my mental fitness and I put 2 stone back on and stopped pushing myself physically.
I've got a picture of myself with a pair of size 10 jeans hanging off me, I can't get them over my knees now ffs.
If I binned all the clothes in my wardrobe that don't fit I'd have hardly anything left.
An old school friend, same age but much slimmer had a heart attack last week.
I've got to do something, I'm 61 next week and old age is starting to worry me!
I've got health and mobility problems and losing the weight will help me manage more.
I wasn't even halfway through that walking workout when I started to feel nauseous, when I finished I walked into the kitchen to get some water, I felt like I was drunk!
So again, thanks for starting the thread and posting the links, I'm actually feeling pretty positive today.

NevermindNelson · 17/05/2024 13:14

@CherryogDog Life has a habit of doing that ☹️ Something going wrong or problems knocking you off course are a given, the trick is getting back up when you can.

How about shifting the thoughts from losing weight to gaining strength? Don’t ruminate on what could go wrong if you don’t get fit, concentrate on what will go right if you do get fit. Then you’ve got a positive goal, not a negative one.

@CherryogDog - please do check out Lucy Wyndham Read. Her workouts are short yet effective, and perfect for people like you. She is very calm and gentle - not like some of the other (shouty) trainers on YouTube.

KatherineHoward · 17/05/2024 18:16

I agree, I’m still doing a couple of the 5 minutes etc though the day.

CherryogDog · 17/05/2024 19:40

@NevermindNelson that's good advice.
And thanks for the recommendation @PaminaMozart

KatherineHoward · 12/06/2024 18:44

Just bumping thread to say I’m still going, doing a couple of 5/10 minute videos a day. Feel a little fitter and I’m definitely toner.

NevermindNelson · 13/06/2024 11:31

@KatherineHoward That's brilliant 🙂Which videos are the ones you do most?

I found a new pilates account on YouTube - Pilates
She explains clearly and it's really good basic work - the sort of work that doesn't feel like much is going on, until the next day when there's a lovely tiny bit soreness.

Mainly a combination of the 5/10 Lucy Wyndham read. And some of seated. Love your recommendations.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 14/08/2024 13:36

I thought I would come back to this chat. I had to take a break as life just got too much. But I’ve managed to make some progress over the last few weeks. I’ve been following the Lucy Wyndham-Reed back to exercise program and have just completed week 4 12minute video.

Which sounds so short but I’m really pleased with myself..
