Can strava upload an activity for the wrong location or wrong date?

Name changed for this. Dh is away at the moment. An activity was uploaded on his strava today for a location he was in until Friday but he is meant to be someone where since then. Is it possible he is in the place he says he is and the activity was uploaded from another day (it is a run which is near identical to one he did on Friday at 8.13 am rather than 8.12 today). Same route just with a bit more on it today (roughly 0.2k more). Could it be some kind of freak or is he def today where strava said he is? No other reasons to doubt him. But this has really thrown me.

I can't think how. Strava records GPS data as it happens, there's no after effect. There are ways to manually add activities, maybe that went wrong? Also, Sometimes it misses data points (no reception).

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:11

Thank you. Just wondering if there could have been some kind of duplicate upload done by mistake? Otherwise it is pretty bad….

I have seen where time/date is incorrect due to wrong setting on Garmin (or whatever device the activity was recorded on)

Surely if he was lying to you about his location he wouldn't be stupid enough to Strava a run in a different place tl where he is meant to be!

If you have no other reason to doubt him I would assume its a glitch. If you have other reasons to doubt him then that's obviously different and more of a concern.

AllMouthButNoTrousers · 05/03/2023 17:24

That's really odd - so it says he did the run today? Is he or has he been somewhere with bad signal/no WiFi?

Bookofdust · 05/03/2023 17:27

Has he got a watch or is it from his phone? Sometimes my watch messes up.

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:32

@StopFeckingFaffing yes I agree. But I just can’t work out how it could be a glitch. Can’t find anything on google.

My Strava updates from my Fitbit/phone without me even having to log in.
Unless he did a manual add for a second run today somewhere else, which he didn't have GPS tracking for (left everything behind). Couldn't be bothered to manually add today's run. He could have perhaps copied the run from the other day to ensure a distance and run were logged, even if not accurate.
But I'm seriously reaching here.

Swalewhale · 05/03/2023 17:35

So it has uploaded a run from Friday at 8:12 then a run on Saturday at 8:13 but with a slightly different distance?
I didn't think this was possible but DH said he sees a lot of people with duplicate runs. Even his did this once because he had logged in through apple and then through another device. (However these runs did say the same day)
Basically If he has used two separate devices to track the same run there could be slight variations in time and distance but not date.

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:36

He def did the run on Friday. It shows a manual one yesterday which could be coz he forgot he phone or did it on a treadmill (I was expecting him to be somewhere with access to a teeadmjll). And yes it shows basically the same run today as was done on Friday. He uses his phone usually to upload.

So there's no little map of his run? It's just text? He could be anywhere then

ThisIsTrifficult · 05/03/2023 17:39

Swalewhale is right. Strava would log one from phone and Fitbit separately but they would appear at the same time for me to view. There could be differences in length and timings, but they would both appear on Strava a similar time after finishing.
I wouldn't get one run from Friday 8:13 and then another run on Saturday 8:13.
Sorry, I feel like I'm explaining terribly.

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:40

There is a map of the run today

OP posts:
Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:41

There was no map of yesterdays run. I totally know that with no map it could be anywhere. But today has the whole run mapped with elevation, pace the full analysis.

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:43

And the speeds for sections are different today vs Friday. So it doesn’t just look like a repeat.

My Strava used to consistently log stuff 7 hours earlier than I’d done them, or maybe later actually. It used to reckon I was out runn8ng at 4am and stuff. Took me months to realise my hometown settings were set to America. So possibly if he’s gone abroad it might be wrong, but it will be consistently wrong rather than a one off blip.

Swalewhale · 05/03/2023 17:48

Strava cannot create a route map for a run that was uploaded manually, it just gives a text entry. So either it was a screenshot image of a past run (which would then appear in his photos) OR he did indeed do the run on Saturday.
...just read your updates, yeah it would not give a false date and certainly not with different pace details.
Sorry OP that doesn't sound like a glitch. Hope you're okay

Chocolatecoinsba · 05/03/2023 17:49

If I manually recorded on Strava and also on Garmin I would get 2 runs on Strava and times might vary very slightly . However I wouldn’t expect one to be uploaded on another day !

Confusedsyravauser · 05/03/2023 17:50

Sorry there was def a manually uploaded run on Saturday. Which didn’t surprise me. Todays is the run that is throwing me. It really doesn’t feel like a glitch does it. Even though I’ve no other reason to doubt him. Remaining chirpy and breezy for the dds atm.

OP I think of todays run had been an exact repeat of Friday in terms of times and route, a glitch might be a plausible explanation that led to double posting. But this isn't that. Strava doesn't just make things up...

cemma · 05/03/2023 17:55

You can manually upload a route and map and timings to Strava using an exported file saved from plotaroute website? Not sure if that helps

Swalewhale · 05/03/2023 17:58

Respectfully could you have perhaps misread the dates because I noticed you are mixing up today with yesterday?
Try not to worry it could be a misunderstanding. Maybe Strava is working off 'upload date' instead of the date of the run. It's really hard for any of us to tell what is going on

@cemma I didn't think of that so that is another possible explanation

Cotswoldmama · 05/03/2023 18:00

If he uses his watch to record his runs etc then it might not load until he connects it to his phone but I think it usually says the right time. It just won't show up on Strava until it connects to his phone.

Cotswoldmama · 05/03/2023 18:01

It could also load twice ever so slightly different if he was recording it on both Strava and his watch. Sometimes GPS can play up and I record on watch and phone and then delete on later.

Cotswoldmama · 05/03/2023 18:02

*one later

MrMarkham · 05/03/2023 18:05

I'm sure Ive had it where I've had the same
Run uploaded from different devices so it looks like I've run it twice - ie if I've recorded on strava on my phone and then also separately on my Fitbit with gps which show slightly different distances and times for the same run. If the recent one
Shows a faster time maybe he's manually uploaded it as it looks better than the other one? And if it's manually uploaded today I think it would show as Sunday's run.
