Anyone for a running training thread?

So I was a good runner in what feels like a previous life (pre kids!) and have recently got back into it. Done the couch 25k program and am gradually building up the mileage with a view to doing a half marathon in may and a full marathon in October next year.
Could do with some support /chat with anyone else training for a race or just wants to debate the finer points of the importance of interval sessions (I hate them!)
I was sure there used to be a running thread on here but I can't find it!

I'm going to go out shortly. I've been putting it off — I told myself it was because I had a cold (I've run before with worse), it's actually because I'm scared of slipping. Ice and dark, not fun! I'm feeling cooped up and twitchy now though. I haven't swum either because I think wet hair would actually freeze walking back from the pool. It was -8 here this morning!

I'm going to head to the park and try a mixture of footpath and grass and hope for the best. I fell on Sunday just walking, and the car park at work was like an ice rink today so I'll just come back if I don't feel safe.

MintChocCornetto · 13/12/2022 18:31

I went out in the snow on Sunday with a mate. It was very slow, we went to the country park down the road and did a gentle 10 miles snapping lots of pics on the way round.

I LOVE that crunchy snow sensation under your feet. It's the best. Pavements are a bit icy here still so haven't been running this week, hopefully tomorrow.

@Forestcantrun I'm ok I managed 5 miles yesterday in -12 ice/snow trails thanks to Inov8 Oroc 290's

They are the best shoe ever for where I live in the winter.

They are filled studded underneath so even on the worst ice you don't slip I actually where them just walking too in this weather

I had tried think like YakTrac in the past but found they would fall off or slip etc so just bit the bullet and invested in proper ice running shoes.

If anyone decides to get a pair definitely get a size bigger as they are small made and you need cozy socks on or feet get freezing

These look great. Thank you for the tip. I absolutely hate ice so even walking the dog these would be handy

I've ventured out for a short one today. It's bitterly cold but just frosty rather than icy. I've had a cold/ cough for much of the past week which is what's really kept me in. It was nice to do a brief run-all run though.

milkfromthesleepycow · 14/12/2022 19:33

Easy run turned into tempo run- some benefits to the near-zero temperatures!

Been struck down with pneumonia again so the slippy roads turned out to be the least of my problems! Bit worried as I’m 1 (but can stretch to 2) weeks until my marathon training kicks off.

greenacrylicpaint · 27/12/2022 15:24

I hope that all of you have had a great holiday.

nice gentle run today to get back into it after christmas rush & coming over a cold.

it was so nice, out on my own. without discussions about fuel prices and the complaints that the goose became a leg of lamb as the farmer was struck by bird flu.

MintChocCornetto · 27/12/2022 15:56

It's been great. Am very hungover today though and I still have a run to do. Fortunately it's only a short one!

milkfromthesleepycow · 27/12/2022 17:05

I ran to the in-laws for Christmas lunch, started hailing when I was 1.5 miles away and I clocked a new mile PB- very motivating 😂
In the gym today and planning a short one for tomorrow

@Forestcantrun I'd definitely stretch to 2 weeks before beginning training. Pneumonia takes time to get over fully- just some short runs not worrying about the time instead?

@greenacrylicpaint it's that's lovely head space isn't it

I admire you running with a hangover @MintChocCornetto. I'd be on the couch main lining irn bru!!

happy new year everyone.

hope you had a good start.
off for an easy 5k with my teens this afternoon. then more serious training to get to the 10k in march.

milkfromthesleepycow · 02/01/2023 13:10

Happy new year
Just did 6 miles with DD on her bike. It was proper fartlek with much walking/ pushing then massive sprints with me yelling at her to slow down- looking at Strava I managed a 7mm for half a mile! (And felt like I was going to collapse 😂). Think I might do it more often

I did nearly 11 miles with a friend this morning. Nice to catch up and chat with a few very short walking breaks on a couple of the hills. The weather was perfect. We're both starting marathon training so it was our long run for this week. (I did 10k yesterday)

xsquared · 02/01/2023 14:32

Happy New Year everyone!

Did a long intervals session this morning through the Nike Run Club app, which ended up being a half marathon of running by the time I got home.

Yesterday, I registered for Manchester marathon. It will be my first full marathon race which I am both excited and nervous about. I have a half marathon race coming up in less than two weeks, so aiming to dial down the distance and intensity for now.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/01/2023 23:57

I need school to go back to pick distance back up and that's next week after a 3 week interuption, so I'm doing little and often of running-all rather than my main plan of jeffing longer distances.

Hopefully that cumulative load will be a reasonable compensation and allow me to pick back up with the base I'd already established.

I've done RED January previously but decided not to try to commit to it this year. In 2021 after several sucessful years, my resolve broke when the schools were shut down, and last year I ended up with an injury from a previous race that hadn't settled over my Christmas, so with two bad years and marathon training going up a gear, I don't want that pressure on me.

Diet2023 · 03/01/2023 16:51

Would like to get back into a habit of running or even walk/run. The weather is doing nothing for getting me out the door though.

just go.
it's nice and warm after half a mile Grin

and being home after with a Brew is the best feeling ever.

Forestcantrun · 07/01/2023 22:50

Did a flippant half marathon today and it was comfortable. Slow long run pace but glad to be back in the game. Mile building to commence from now.

milkfromthesleepycow · 08/01/2023 07:40

We'll done @Forestcantrun love the concept of a flippant half 😂

I'm craving a bit more structure as I feel like I've just been tooteling about (and my right Achilles is noticeable, not painful but I know it exists if that makes any sense- so kept taking rest days). Trying a training plan called TrainAsONE if anyone else has tried?

It was mainly to talk myself out of buying a garmin after reading about garmin coach on the half marathon thread! I have a perfectly good Apple Watch which has been serving me faithfully!!

I signed up to train as one but got annoyed with it. Ymmv

milkfromthesleepycow · 08/01/2023 10:54

That's what I fear. I've become terribly irritated with various coaching plans in the past. They either want me to run too fast or too slow. It's a free trial at the moment so I'll see how it goes

OP posts:
greenacrylicpaint · 08/01/2023 11:05

my eyes gloss over when I read training plans that have too much technical detail...
I tried one that asked me to do a slow run in zone 2.
my problem is, a fast walk is zone 2 for me. when running I'm in zone 5 within the first km but can keep that up for hours.

Forestcantrun · 09/01/2023 13:25

@milkfromthesleepycow I recommend the flippant half. Complete accident, meant to just do the 12 miles on my programme but I was comfortable and still a bit from the house so kept going.
I’ve got a fancy Garmin. All the fancy functions are wasted on me. I enjoy the post run synopsis on the app though 🤣 I’ve the Runners world 4hour training plan on the go. I am aiming for sub 4:30 but this is a good plan….. I am using it as a broad guideline, doing 4 instead of 5 runs but trying to stick to the long runs recommended as I’m anxious to have miles in my legs.

MintChocCornetto · 09/01/2023 15:34

I'm doing a mish mash of one of hal higdon's free plans with two runs substituted with "fast fall" speedwork

I'm also on a diet after a horrifying weigh in with a new PT at the gym so if I speed up it's probably due to the weight loss more than anything 😂

xsquared · 09/01/2023 16:10

@MintChocCornetto

I follow Track club babe on Instagram, and the testimonials sound amazing! It's quite pricey though, so let us know how it goes for you before I consider parting cash!

MintChocCornetto · 09/01/2023 16:14

@xsquared I'm actually quite enjoying the speedwork which is something I NEVER thought I would say.

It's hard but over quite quickly 😂

I have programmed all the workouts into my watch though so there's no slacking once I've pressed Start

I do feel my cadence/leg speed has improved, I'm starting week 4 now. But I don't know how that will translate into races.
