Anyone for a running training thread?

So I was a good runner in what feels like a previous life (pre kids!) and have recently got back into it. Done the couch 25k program and am gradually building up the mileage with a view to doing a half marathon in may and a full marathon in October next year.
Could do with some support /chat with anyone else training for a race or just wants to debate the finer points of the importance of interval sessions (I hate them!)
I was sure there used to be a running thread on here but I can't find it!

I do myself a bingo card of different runs to do length, type, location, things to spot type thing. That helps to keep it interesting, although I can run in the day and am not restricted to shortish runs at night.

In December, night time runs are my favourite as the houses are lit up. January is an unpleasant shock, but I tend to do RED January and have something on the horizon. I try to focus on being past the solstice and daylight eeking out a bit more by the end of January.

MintChocCornetto · 08/11/2022 11:41

Yeah you've just got to do it unfortunately.

I read an article a few years ago about Rich Roll - his philosophy of mood follows action. If you're not in the mood, do it anyway. The best thing you can do to change your mental state is to change your physical state. Force yourself to do something.

It gets me out of the door on those dark rainy nights because I know if I don't I'll be kicking myself later.

RunBecause · 08/11/2022 12:38

Well done @Rainydaize

RunBecause · 08/11/2022 12:42

My tip is get out the door early if you can. For short runs I just get dressed and go - everything laid out night before including headtorch. Getting up at say 6am for a 6.30 long run (need to eat first 😁) can mean being home before 9am and feeling all smug for the rest of the day.

milkfromthesleepycow · 09/11/2022 06:48

@Rainydaize great work! I'm also a 'lay the clothes out the night before and just stumble out the door' kind of runner. Just working on doing it in the dark now!

Does everyone eat something before they run? I find if I run within 3hrs (seriously!) of eating I get a stitch after a couple of miles. As I'm increasing distance I think this is becoming a problem and I'm certainly not going to be marathon ready without sorting it. Any suggestions?

Ps I hate bananas

@milkmilkfromthesleepycow
I was listening to the women's running podcast and they were talking about advent chocolates before runs. 😂

I eat a yoghurt for breakfast and eat that (or a banana) before a run.

greenacrylicpaint · 09/11/2022 07:03

I also can't run with food.

I need at least 2 hours after food and at least half an hour after drink or I get stitches or (even worse) an unpleasant urge.

I'm also an 'after sweater'. sweat long after finishing exercise. means I don't like to go for a run in work days in the morning or during lunch break if I don't have the time to cool down and stop sweating.

fellrunner85 · 09/11/2022 07:03

Does everyone eat something before they run?

No, never. I can't; it makes me feel sick. I force a Weetabix down before a marathon but only because I know I need to. I never eat before a training run.

Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2022 07:28

I eat breakfast before running if I'm going to run for more than an hour.
If I run in the evening I just eat normally through the day.
I often have a few haribos (star mix) before parkrun or a race though

Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2022 07:34

I would leave at least an hour ideally 1.5 hrs between eating a meal and running (haribos I would eat 5-10 min before running) And I never eat eggs for breakfast before running as that doesn't work for me

Swissnotswiss · 09/11/2022 09:25

Does everyone eat something before they run?
Just a yoghurt or a banana as I run in the morning and feel dizzy running on an empty stomach.

RunBecause · 09/11/2022 10:01

i eat before a run if it’s longer than about 10km. 30 minutes before is fine for long slow runs but haven’t tried eating then going out for a speed/hill session!
As I’ve run long distances I have trained to run and eat - an ultra is more an eating competition than anything else 🤣

Shopgirl1 · 09/11/2022 10:02

If I’m running first thing I wait for breakfast after my run. I run before eating at lunch also. If racing and it’s at around 9 or so, I’ll have breakfast at 7.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/11/2022 10:10

I can't do much more than 5k fasted, I've got too much history of feeling woozy on an empty stomach.

I like crisps pre-run, lots of lovely starch and salt! Nakd bars are good too. I nibble at those on a long run.

I favour running late morning/ lunch time. I just can't seem to get myself out mid-morning. I can roll out and do a short run first thing which I tend to do in the holidays.

MintChocCornetto · 09/11/2022 11:30

I always have to eat beforehand. A snack bar for parkruns. Long runs always require porridge or toast but I have to wait at least an hour before running. Means a very early start sometimes 🙁

milkfromthesleepycow · 09/11/2022 13:52

Interesting, thanks all
Think I'll start trying with crisps or half a protein bar an hour before my long runs and try and 'train' my stomach to accept it

@milkfromthesleepycow

Active root or tailwind

That's what I use, I can't eat either.

You will get about 30g of carbs per 300/500ml

RunBecause · 10/11/2022 06:37

How are you feeling @Indoctro ? Not long now 😁

Indoctro · 10/11/2022 10:04

@RunBecause

Not the best ...nervous about lack of training after last 3 weeks issues with my foot and then to top it off yesterday woke with a head cold

I've visions that's it's going to be absolutely awful and a huge struggle, if I even make it to the end.

RunBecause · 10/11/2022 12:21

I know that feeling well! You will be fine - you have trained well up to a few weeks ago. You will make it Flowers

RunBecause · 11/11/2022 20:24

Good luck @Indoctro ! You can do it 💪

Indoctro · 12/11/2022 20:40

@RunBecause thank you

I finished and got my B goal

A was 6 hours

B was 6-6.5 hours for the 50k mark

C just to finish before 8 hour cut off.

I went through 50k at 6.26 Smile so delighted and I finished at 6.42
