If you regularly run ultra, are planning your first or are kinda secretly mulling over the idea of doing one Smile welcome to the party.

I’ve been terrified of covid too @RandomUsernameHere
Nearly everyone I know has a cold so I’ve been sniffing vicks first defence and taking echinacea all week!
Where are you starting?

RandomUsernameHere · 02/10/2021 05:51

Thanks @WithCatLikeTread !
@Runningforcakes I'm actually doing the Jersey marathon which is on the same day. Would prefer to be doing London though as Jersey is very hilly! The forecast is for rain and very strong wind Confused

RelentlessForwardProgress · 02/10/2021 16:51

Good Luck for London tomorrow
@Giraffeski
@catinthewindow

Thank you! Picked up number this afternoon and just checked into hotel, queues at Excel RIDICULOUS

I arrived around 1pm and finally got my bib at 2.30 -
Ridiculously there were even more people only just starting to queue when I left at 3.45pm so no idea how they will get through them all. When I finally checked into my hotel at 4pm and even later at 4.30 there were people still checking in at the hotel with their drop bags in their hands- I wanted to scream at them ‘GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT!!’😂😂😂 I don’t hold out much hope of them running tomorrow to be honest!

Giraffeski · 02/10/2021 17:48

Is anyone going to be at the British Fell relays on the 16th October?
Also is anyone signed up for the LL50/100 this year? I've got a place on the 100 after doing the 50 last year Confused

emummy · 02/10/2021 18:00

Good luck tomorrow everyone!

RelentlessForwardProgress · 02/10/2021 18:46

@Giraffeski, i'd love to chat with you about the lakeland. I've never done it because I'm worried its too far beyond my capabilities, particularly the orienteering side of things, I eye it up regularly because its a qualifier for the western states, and there aren't many! I know you've got a lot on this weekend Grin but when you've had a rest next week, can you tell me about it please.

Please remind me about this if I forget to come back to you- the nav is really not bad on the LL 50 at all and in fact although I am reasonable good with a map and compass I didn't have the map out once as the route description (they call it the road book) and the route gpx on my Garmin was good enough, plus there were very few sections on the 50 that I was alone for t be honest.
Most people do recces as well.
I will chat about this in more detail when i'm not trying to get to sleep pre race though!

Good luck everyone!!!

Has anyone done an ultra as part of a team? I'm signed up to do an 80km trail next year. It's split into 5 (uneven) legs and can be run solo, or with any amount of team members making up the 5 legs. I am running it as a team of 2, but the uneven distances for each leg means the fairest way to share the distance is for me to run legs 1, 2 and 5. My team mate will run the 38kmish in between. I have no idea what to do for the time in between to keep my legs ticking over.... ice bath then hot shower before I run again? Legs up or keep moving? I have plenty time to start playing around with morning and evening runs to see how I go, but interested to hear any thoughts :)

catinthewindow · 04/10/2021 06:03

Marathon done! Have to say I struggled far far more than running on the hilly trails. So much pavement and buildings and… straightness. Way too many people for me 😬😂

But it’s iconic and I raised a load of money for charity. Never again though 🤔 [signs up for trail marathon instead]

Runningforcakes · 04/10/2021 06:42

Well done cat.
I have to say i loved it. The variety of people, the sights, the bands, the kids giving high fives…
Totally different from trail.
Can’t decide if it was harder or not. I struggled a bit with the last few miles but the rest felt good even though I was pushing myself every step.

Not sure if I’ll do it again as it was a pretty perfect experience yesterday.

Looking forward to getting back in the hills and mud and I don’t want to see another gel for a long time!

Cabbage-I’ve done Thunder run where you do 10k laps as a team for 24 hours. We found best strategy was to have a quick, gentle stretch then rest and eat before a short warm up before the next leg. We were camping so no hot or cold baths but if you can do that i bet it would be great.

catinthewindow · 04/10/2021 08:44

@Runningforcakes Yes I have to say the variety of runners was amazing. I almost cried at that at one point (I was knackered and an injury was playing up in my defence 😂). Ended up running with the same group of people of all different sizes and ages and it was lovely.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 04/10/2021 16:38

@catinthewindow
@Runningforcakes

Bravo both of you!

Hope by you have had a nice rest, a nice bath and some serious chocolate

In reading about the London this weekend, I came across mention of the Ever Present group.

If you don't know about them, I'd really recommend a read, they are awesome Grin

Oh wow! The bit about one breaking his arm and carrying on 😬😂

I also came across the reverse London marathon group … they start running at midnight and run the route backwards through the night!

Giraffeski · 04/10/2021 19:27

London done but fuck me it hurt more when I stopped than a hilly ultra!!
My race photos are hilarious, in all the pics of me running I look smiling and serene and then as soon as I cross the finish line I look completely shocked and horrified by the pain!
Really pleased with my time Smile

catinthewindow · 04/10/2021 19:30

Brilliant @Giraffeski … likewise I hurt so much 😬

catinthewindow · 04/10/2021 19:42

I’ve also just checked my photos on the back of that and they’re hilarious. My face is either looking completely confused as to why I’m there or in agony … to be honest sums it up well 😂

Runningforcakes · 04/10/2021 21:26

I’m hurting more as the day has gone on Grin I’m hoping for some more photos to be added as the ones on there so far aren’t very exciting! The one I look best in has the unfortunate background of a charity shop which isn’t really the iconic sight that comes to mind when you think of the London Marathon!

Ready to start planning the next challenge now.

Giraffeski · 05/10/2021 10:36

Actually still laughing about my finish line picture, I really want to post it here but it would totally out me as I've been posting under this name for about 18 years.

catinthewindow · 05/10/2021 15:32

@Giraffeski me too … the expressions are priceless/ a bit too raw!

RandomUsernameHere · 05/10/2021 20:40

Well done for London everyone! Jersey went great on Sunday, feeling really happy!
Just signed up for a half in November and now thinking about what else to do Grin

WithCatLikeTread · 05/10/2021 21:38

Well done on Jersey & London!

My Dh didn’t get as fast a time as he wanted but he’s ok about it now, just wants to do it again.
I had a great time supporting, Mile 14/15 then 19/20. Then the pub with everyone coming in with medals & marshals being cheered in. Was a great atmosphere. Happy to support again, not entering the ballot.

When I did it I found it too busy, hated endless people calling my name, etc. Depends on your personality I think, some people love it.

I’ve got a local marathon in 3 weeks, thought I better get moving so 10 miles this morning, last 2 were tough though. Have felt like a snooze all day!
