NHS Bmi calculator says I'm overweight

After 10 years of not weighing myself Ive this evening weighted myself and I'm 11 stone. Checked on the NHS and I'm officially overweight.

Im a size ten and I genuinely eat healthily. I actually struggle sometimes to eat three meals a day because I'm not hungry/too busy, whatever. I exercise most days - mix of cardio and weight lifting both freestyle and classes. I love exercising.

I feel really demoralised and upset. I don't exercise to lose weight but I'm upset that I'm classed as overweight.

One thing I would keep an eye on is the weight you carry around your middle. It can be an indicator of further issues later on in life, as you're carrying a higher proportion of fat than is optimal. You're probably still healthier than 90% of the population though.

fellrunner85 · 21/08/2021 12:28

I think you need to be honest with yourself, OP. The evidence is all there - your weight, your BMI, your photo - and it's up to you what you do with that.

Stevie6 · 21/08/2021 12:32

@carrottbaton did you weigh again this morning for a more accurate number?

CheeseyMcCheeseface · 21/08/2021 12:33

My OH lost a lot of weight and got the the middle of the healthy BMI range, he was just bones to me.

carrottbaton · 21/08/2021 12:51

Ok thanks, I'm going to leave it there because I think some of you are being a bit unkind. I haven't got a problem with how I look or my dress size. I am surprised I weighed that much but guess that's what getting older and having two kids does. I certainly won't be putting myself on any calorie controlled diet or trying to 'lose weight' though as a result.

Thanks for those that have commented.

@carrottbaton I personally don't see an issue, we are all different shapes and having kids knocks it out of whack too. As I said if you weigh first thing I think you'll find you're within the BMI range. I don't know why people have to be such dicks on here sometimes

Sylvvie · 21/08/2021 13:05

I am 10 stone and 5ft, which means I am size 12/14 in clothes. I very much feel overweight and look out of shape because of the way my weight is distributed.

BMI is probably the most awful weight calculator I've seen though, because I am actually just a healthy weight and size (even if I'm not personally comfortable with it).

Sorry yes I did, I was 10,10. Redid the BMI and it was 24.

I thought you'd probably turn out to be a healthy weight if you weighed yourself first thing.

Seeing your picture and knowing your body-fat % is fine, I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about.

Stevie6 · 21/08/2021 13:27

@carrottbaton within healthy range then. Please ignore some of the ridiculous comments on here, some people take too much please in putting others down

rookiemere · 21/08/2021 13:29

Ah well there you go OP. BMI of 24 is perfectly fine. Personally I'd go back to not weighing and judge your size by how your clothes fit.

CookPassBabtridge · 21/08/2021 13:39

@carrottbaton

Hopefully this will attach, have taken a photo of myself to try to show my shape. This has been very enlightening discussion though.
I think you look absolutely fine. This forum is full of 8/9 stone 5ft 8ers, I don't see it in real life.
Tanfastic · 21/08/2021 13:46

You look fine to me op, similar shape to how o was when I was your weight except I have bigger boobs 😬. Unfortunately I've got bigger so I am trying to lose but I only want to go back to 10.5-11 stone if I'm
Honest

happydays2345 · 21/08/2021 17:07

I think you look like a healthy 14. 😊

fellrunner85 · 22/08/2021 19:28

Agree, @happydays2345 - and healthy is what matters, not what labels in clothes say.

Perriwinkles · 23/08/2021 02:26

Doesn’t muscle weigh more than fat? Maybe you Just gained muscle? I’d forget about the the BMI calculator IIWY - as it’s such a blunt instrument - & mention it to the GP the next time you’re in there.

Perriwinkles · 23/08/2021 02:30

On these threads, people seem so often to boast about what size clothes they are wearing, whilst arguing that BMI is a useless way of measuring whether or not they are a healthy weight

This is so true.

Perriwinkles · 23/08/2021 02:32

OP @carrottbaton

I think you look very thin & definitely no more than a size 10. The angle of the photo you took is unflattering for everyone. I’m a size 10 and my legs are way flabbier than yours!

As I said, just mention it to the GP but I’m sure you’re ok and you look great. Flowers

Yes! I looked up the BMI calculator and at 5’8’’ and 9 stone, this is what it had to say:

You are in the healthy weight range, but at the lower end. Keep an eye on your weight and try to stay in the healthy range

There may be an underlying medical cause for your weight, or your diet may not be providing you with enough calories. We suggest you discuss this with your GP

Guineapigbridge · 23/08/2021 03:12

You look fine. Try not to think about it. You know you're healthy.

NiceGerbil · 23/08/2021 03:45

Just put some figs in NHS calc. 5 5, 11 stone, female, assumed 30.

Max healthy is 10 10. So you're what. Marginally over.

Stop freaking out. Why are you do upset? You feel good etc and a calc has destroyed it all by putting you in a slight green to yellow area?

Really it's not a big deal. You can get into green easy.

(Also I don't think the calc takes really big boobs into account properly but hey that's my lookout! It's based on chaps I'm sure).
