NHS Bmi calculator says I'm overweight

carrottbaton · 20/08/2021 19:26

After 10 years of not weighing myself Ive this evening weighted myself and I'm 11 stone. Checked on the NHS and I'm officially overweight.

Im a size ten and I genuinely eat healthily. I actually struggle sometimes to eat three meals a day because I'm not hungry/too busy, whatever. I exercise most days - mix of cardio and weight lifting both freestyle and classes. I love exercising.

I feel really demoralised and upset. I don't exercise to lose weight but I'm upset that I'm classed as overweight.

What height are you?

carrottbaton · 20/08/2021 19:29

5 ft 5

I'm always amazed how bodies can be so different. At 5'4 and 10 stone I'm a size 12 but have loads of flab/fat. For me to be a size 10 all over I'd need to be 9 stone. Generally I go along with BMI as a good guide but really wouldn't be that bothered if I was a size 10.

Cotswoldmama · 20/08/2021 19:34

I'm 5ft 5 too and just did the NHS calculator, I'm underweight but it said a healthy weight would be between 7st 13 and 10st 10 so you're not far off a healthy weight.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/08/2021 19:34

If you're happy with your body and you are happy with your fitness level, and you are only a few pounds into the overweight category - does it matter??

BMI is an indicator. You could also look at your body fat percentage, your waist to hip measurements as well, and see what they say.

Darthwader · 20/08/2021 19:36

If you are a size 10 then you have nothing to worry about. I'm 5.5 and 8.5 stone and a size 8-10. Your scales may be inaccurate.

thenightsky · 20/08/2021 19:37

I'm 11 stone too, like the OP. But I'm 5ft 8in. No way am I a size 10. BMI shows i'm top end of healthy weight, so I can well believe the OP is showing as overweight for her height.

Hercisback · 20/08/2021 19:41

I'm the same height and half a stone heavier and nowhere near a healthy bmi or size 10.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/08/2021 19:41

5ft 5 and 11st is a BMi of 25.6, so 0.6 into the overweight range. 5ft 8 and 11st is a BMI of 23.4. 10st 10lbs is the border between healthy weight and overweight for a 5ft 5in woman.

carrottbaton · 20/08/2021 19:43

I'm not lying. I'm sitting here wearing all size 10 clothes. I don't have a lot of flab, maybe some tummy fat,

Sorry posted too soon - some stomach fat that I struggle to shift, but I have 2 kids, the youngest is 2.
I don't feel more overweight than I did at 9 stone a decade ago. But I am a lot more active now than I was then.

As a PP said, you're so close to being within the healthy weight range. You could just lose a few pounds and that would do it.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 20/08/2021 19:46

I'm always in the "overweight" bmi category but have a low body fat percentage and am fairly healthy and strong. Bmi isn't a perfect measurement, but one indicator of health. So long as you're exercising plenty and eating well, you're probably fine. Try not to get too hung up on numbers.

TheCanyon · 20/08/2021 19:47

I've came to the conclusion the bin calculators a load of shite. I'm the same height as you and according to the bmi calculator I am underweight. I'm perfectly curvy and NOT skinny.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 20/08/2021 19:49

I would suggest measuring your body fat - you can buy scales that will do it (not going to be 100% accurate without spending £££ but would give an idea). You can then look online to see if the % is at a healthy level.

I wouldn't be worried about being very slightly overweight (according to NHS) if you are happy with how you look and feel.

GorgeousGoldies · 20/08/2021 19:52

I’m 5’10” and 11stone, but a size 12-14.

This has been shared on here before, but shows how different in how the same weight/height can look.

underneaththeash · 20/08/2021 19:52

Wow - I’m a cm shorter and size 10. But I’m just over 9 stone. Are you talking U.K. sizes?

carrottbaton · 20/08/2021 19:53

Yup - UK sizes.

redpontipine · 20/08/2021 19:54

5ft4 and 10 stone 10 and I am a size 10. Probably a larger 10 at the moment but definitely not a 12.
At 9 stone im very very small.

I don't think I look my weight to be honest i have a bit of a belly not shifted my baby weight (7 months) I'm definitely not built of muscle either.
But yes I believe you. Maybe it's the bones.

merryhouse · 20/08/2021 19:55

I'm the same height and weight as you (well, I was last week) and I've recently realised that all my size 12 clothes are too big and started buying size 10.

(I was a size 10 back when I was 16 and 22 pounds lighter... but that's a different rant Grin)

The trouble with "struggling to eat 3 meals a day" is that you then don't really have any idea of what you're normally eating. Have you ever tried keeping notes? Don't analyse it to start with, just write it all down. Bald facts if you can't bring yourself to weigh, that can come later.

Daisy03 · 20/08/2021 19:57

It also depends where you shop? Ie an M&S size 10 is completely different from say a zara size 10

FlowerArranger · 20/08/2021 19:58

I agree with @SquirryTheSquirrel re. the importance of measuring your body fat.

Remember: muscles are heavier than fat!

If in doubt, work out Wink

merryhouse · 20/08/2021 19:59

Oh, and my body fat is 29% ish, which apparently is fine. I don't know about heavy bones, but I certainly have large ones - 6EEE feet, can play a tenth on the piano, looked ridiculous in shoulder pads when they were the fashion...

SheWoreYellow · 20/08/2021 20:02

I don’t think the body fat scales work. Waist measurement is a more reliable measure of health than BMI. Or waist:hip ratio. Maybe have a look at that.

Screwcorona · 20/08/2021 20:04

It's probably that you have more muscle. It does weigh more than far. Maybe higher bone density too.
I'm currently a bit fat but before my two kids I was "obese" yet slim tall and very muscular
