Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

Absolutely NOT cheating one little bit!

5foot418stone · 29/03/2021 17:21

OK, I'm glad it's not cheating! Definitely easier on my knees doing it like that.

Not cheating at all! Shows how much progress you have made.

5foot418stone · 01/04/2021 15:39

Did it in 2:09 today

Been lurking on this thread! Wow OP - 2:09! amazing time Star

5foot418stone · 01/04/2021 16:25

Thank you 😊 I've really been focusing on stretching and strengthening exercises and trying to have good form when going up the steps. Lots less knee pain today which was nice.

Just looking back through the thread...on the 9th March it took you 3.06 minutes with 2 stops. Now look at what you're doing less than a month later!!

notanothersaveusername · 01/04/2021 18:41

I recognised the steps at Saltburn! They are killers lol!

I can almost walk up them in one go, but thank god a couple stopped me and asked me to take their photo overlooking the sea!

LeggingWoah · 01/04/2021 20:20

OP you are an inspiration! Do you mind me asking what calories you are having at the moment? I'm 5'4" and a similar weight - I'm quite fit and do a reasonable amount of exercise (run 3k working up to 5k, cycle 10-12 miles, walking, HIIT) and I'm really struggling to stick to my arbitrary limit of 1600 calories atm

5foot418stone · 01/04/2021 21:03

@Atreus it feels like that first attempt was ages ago! I really do I hope I get it down to 1:50 by the end!

@notanothersaveusername haha, I used to be grateful for the break but now I'm like NO IM ON A TIMER 😁

@LeggingWoah my calories are all over the place, tbh. I'll eat back a portion of my exercise calories if I'm really hungry or tired/sore, focusing on protein. I try to aim for an 8k calorie deficit at the end of each week so I don't stress if I eat over my recommendation of 1400 on 1 or more days! I'll get stricter as I lose more weight.

Just sat and read this whole thread through, my first time visiting the exercise topic.

Wow OP it's amazing and so motivational to see someone so dedicated! And what incredible progress!

Side note but what a lovely area, I hadn't heard of it before, lovely pictures. You've inspired me to branch out and try some different walks in my local area! In the SW so lots to pick from.

Well done you are making incredible progress and in regards to your previous posts, who gives a flip what others think - although I am certain 99% of people either don't care or they think 'yes, go her'.

Marriagegoingtoimplode · 03/04/2021 21:36

You are an inspiration op. Well done!

5foot418stone · 04/04/2021 15:57

Thank you for your kind words and support, I really appreciate it, especially on my rubbish days.

Finally broke the 50 miles mark this week! Still have one more dog walk to do later when I do the steps so hoping to finish my week on 53 miles walked and hopefully get a good time on the steps.

@labobo, that made me laugh, how very dare they! Probably s 23 year old in the control room thinking "there's an elderly person risking their liiife on my watch."

WiseOwlOne · 04/04/2021 22:27

@5foot418stone go for it! Looks like a good goal.

Tambourinetunes · 04/04/2021 22:35

And it hasn’t even been a month since your first post. Thank you for continuing to update. I love reading about your achievements - well done!

moochingtothepub · 04/04/2021 22:42

Very inspirational, I need to take a leaf out of your book!

For my own journey I've got as far as buying a new sports bra and swimsuit, alas that alone doesn't get me fit.

If you can do it so can I. Thank you!

5foot418stone · 04/04/2021 23:05

@Tambourinetunes thank you for being so kind and supportive!

@moochingtothepub you absolutely can. A good sports bra is essential 😁

Wow @5foot418stone, I have just come across your thread. I am so impressed with how you have done!

I am a very similar boat, 5’4” and started at 118.5kg, now about 111.5kg but obviously got a long way to go. I am sadly not as dedicated as you though.

You’re doing brilliantly, most inspiring. Keep it up!

5foot418stone · 04/04/2021 23:31

@Fitbeforeihit50 that's a very impressive loss, I know exactly how hard it is, so I hope you are proud of yourself! & the most important thing is that you're doing it! We're gonna smash our goals eventually!

(also my dedication to the steps is really only because I'm avoiding housework and decorating Grin. Can't be doing that stuff if I'm out exercising and trying to be healthy!)

reprehensibleme · 04/04/2021 23:38

So inspiring. Was watching some programme tonight with Nadia Hussain and she was in Saltburn - there was a glimpse of the steps and I immediately thought of you powering up them!

5foot418stone · 04/04/2021 23:51

@reprehensibleme thank you for your support! Yeah, the steps start next to the takeaway hatch for that restaurant and then head up behind it, so I am tortured by the smell of fresh fish and chips the entire time Grin

NoGoodPunsLeft · 05/04/2021 17:04

Bit late but people laughing at you are twats! If I saw you get to the top I'd probably high five you (in non-pandemic times obvs Grin)
