Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

Very late to this party! You're doing so well! When I was recovering from shoulder & hip surgery I used to challenge myself to walk to the next driveway. I have stupid joints that try and dislocate so I am nervous about stairs and damp. I have managed to lose the weight by dieting (and now stick to a rigid, boring diet to keep it off - zzzzzzz). You should be very proud of yourself because you are looking after yourself in a responsible, healthy way and being accountable for your future.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind words and support and for sharing your exercise and weightloss journeys!

There has been a slight improvement on the back pain, I actually slept in my bed laying down last night. Today I feel good! I weighed in at 103.1kg this morning and hitting 100kg feels so close now, like I can definitely achieve that by the end of the month if I work hard.

Heading out for a walk now, found a new place to explore with my kids, then I'll go to Saltburn and do the steps. Fingers crossed for a decent time!

Did it in 1:55 without stopping 😲

Covent Garden tube nearly killed me in my 20s! Followed by a slog up to the cheap seats before the installed escalators!
Good luck. If you're getting up those steps now only stopping two or three times, I'd say you're doing better than most!

Christinayangtwistedsister · 16/04/2021 17:48

You're doing really well, I would probably need to be resuscitated if I tried those steps!

BendyLikeBeckham · 17/04/2021 08:22

1.55!!!! Bloody well done!!! Star

Sounds like you’re jogging up, now!

midgedude · 18/04/2021 17:54

You do know you'll have to try it twice next?!?

This is so true. I remember wondering why i was bothering with a gym!
5foot418stone · 18/04/2021 20:06

Did it in 1:59 today.

I don't think I'm ready to try it twice! Maybe if I do a loop and go down the steps at the other end of the prom before walking back up the torture steps so I can give my knees a break and remember how to breathe 🤣

You have gone from can't to a perfectly good suggestion in one sentence !

Yes, having a lower intensity break is exactly the right way to tackle it . When you are ready , on a day that feels really good

NotquitewhatImeant · 25/04/2021 09:18

OP I’ve just read your thread and felt bad skulking off without leaving a comment - you are brilliant! Keep it up Star

5foot418stone · 27/04/2021 20:44

Here are my times for the past few days

1:54
2:03
1:55
1:56
2:01

So close to the 1:50 goal. I've got a week left to get there!

My back is almost 100% again, so I'm feeling great, really motivated to hit my goal!

I'm not going to weigh again until the 30th but going by how my trousers fit I think I will have made it to the 100kg point too.

Today I've done 36,100 steps which is something I haven't managed in years.

This challenge, this thread and the support and help everyone has given has changed me so much.

I've got a long way to go but it's been a great start. :)

Just read this thread. OP, you’ve done brilliantly. It’s so hard to keep the discipline when you have things like injuries going on. I’m so proud of you. So good to see someone with realistic but ‘stretch’ goals who is in it for the long haul.

You can make 1.50, i’m sure, and smash that weight goal. You rock!

Peachee · 28/04/2021 07:53

Omg go for it!! I heard today that you burn the same amount of calories walking the same distance as running(obvs there are other benefits to running heart health etc.) the calorie thing to me is brilliant though.. made me feel more motivated to go out for walks! X

Bigsighall · 28/04/2021 09:38

Just read the thread, you’re doing amazingly! I’m so impressed!

BarryTheKestrel · 28/04/2021 10:50

I've just come across this and wow you are doing incredible! Even with a bad back and set backs you've kept going and done amazing! You have given me the motivation to order my trainers so I can start my exercise journey.

Any kind of incline, steps or a hill, kills me at the moment, I am so unfit. Need to get to grips with it for the sake of the kids. Thank you for the inspiration and good luck with the rest of your journey!

Atreus · 28/04/2021 15:24

You are doing so brilliantly!

midgedude · 28/04/2021 17:25

I love the updates

Look after yourself

SquashMinusIsShit · 30/04/2021 09:10

36,100 steps

😱 I thought I did well doing 29.5k on Monday!

Well done 🙌🏼🥳

5foot418stone · 30/04/2021 12:32

Thanks everyone ☺️

Weighed in at 99.9kg this morning, so just squeaked under!

I'll be doing the steps this evening, gonna try them twice too. Fingers crossed for a good time!

OP posts:
midgedude · 30/04/2021 12:38

If you do them twice any time is a good time !

Well done , are you starting to feel the benefit yet?

5foot418stone · 01/05/2021 22:20

Yes, I definitely feel better, less plodding 😅

OP posts:
5foot418stone · 01/05/2021 22:23

I still haven't hit 1:50.

But I did them twice in a row. & 1:53 today.

I am doing a fundraiser for a charity I love and I never would have been able to do this 2 months ago.
