Anyone else waiting for London Marathon Ballot results?

Emails coming today apparently. I’ve entered every year since 2009 with no luck! One year I entered on behalf of my (now) DH...and he only got a bloody place on his first attempt 😂
So...year 12 for me...anyone else waiting?

I'm in!!!!!!!!

And I thought I had forgotten to apply. So, I was amazed.

It's given me such a boost. I've had such an awful 3 years of illness and I'm now on the road to recovery. Only trouble is, my bladder nurse has told me not to run. So, please everyone, don't tell her. (although GP said I could ignore that advice during lockdown for sake of overall health)

I've applied every single year since 2007 and this will be my second time.

TheChosenTwo · 08/02/2021 15:49

Oh my god, I got a place 😳 only been trying for 12 years! I presumed they know they won’t be holding a ‘proper event’ this year and know it will be a virtual one for people to just do from home or wherever so they’d just let anyone join and so raising as much money as possible but maybe not 😳
does that really mean it’s a proper event? I’m still doubtful to be honest but delighted and fucking terrified at the same time!

TheDuchessOfAquitaine · 08/02/2021 15:52

@dizzydizzydizzy and @TheChosenTwo
Congratulations!!! Good to know that it can happen :) Good luck with your training!

Rejection for me, fifth one. Not too unhappy, as the thought of being able to travel to London, big crowds, etc, seems like a million years away.

Was supposed to do Manchester last year, but got cancelled just as I started to taper Sad

@dizzydizzydizzy congrats Flowers

Redcrayons · 08/02/2021 15:53

And congrats @TheChosenTwo Flowers

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/02/2021 15:54

@TheChosenTwo it seems so unlikely that it can be a proper event but it's 8 months away so let's see. I must admit, virtual seems probable. Congratulations btw!

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/02/2021 15:55

Thanks @TheDuchessOfAquitaine and @Redcrayons! Smile

AuntieStella · 08/02/2021 15:55

Yes, there is a proper event in October - or at least that's the plan (because who knows if the pesky pandemic will allow an event that very, very big)

And there is the virtual (priority sign up for those rejected in the ballot)

Better dust off that training plan!!

TheChosenTwo · 08/02/2021 16:01

Thanks for the Congrats, feels surreal Confused
I don’t believe there will be an official event (other than for the elites as there was last year) - I know so many people who were due to run last year and now have the place secured for this year or next, there’s no way given the current state of things that I believe there will be mass crowds in October. Nice thought but I don’t see it happening. Which then begs the question - do I want to just run a marathon from my front door? Is part of the excitement not the event itself?! Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited but this doesn’t really feel like running the London marathon Grin

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/02/2021 16:09

@TheChosenTwo yeah fully agree. I have had such a hellish few years though that I feel I will I be excited (and indeed privileged) to be in a position to take part in any form. Would much rather do the 'normal' race, obviously.

LivingOnTheVeg · 08/02/2021 16:09

Eighth no for me this year. Gutted as always but totally not surprised. I wish they’d make the entry a bit tighter - either work out how to bring back the guaranteed place after X number of years, or even ask you to submit proof you’ve at least done a half marathon before. Or stop charging charities so much for charity places so more people could realistically go via the fundraising route without worrying how they’ll raise £3K+!

Redcrayons · 08/02/2021 16:21

@TheChosenTwo I was supposed to do my first marathon last year, but decided not to go virtual as I Wanted my first (and probably last) to be a bit of an occasion.
But if they do cancel, you should get rolled onto next year, so you’re still in.

TheChosenTwo · 08/02/2021 16:24

@Redcrayons I think so to. What I don’t understand though is how they’re going to feasibly put on an event for all the runners last year whose places were rolled over, potentially this years and also next years runners too. That’s a lot more runners than usual if they keep opening ballots!
Which makes me think they know it’s just going to be totally virtual.
I mean, I’m just happy to have a place in anything but I’d rather do it properly. Still, it’s nice to have something to aim for!

SohoOrigami · 08/02/2021 17:38

Oh GOD I've got a place. First time in 11 years of trying. And I'm giving birth in July Confused

Had actually forgotten ballot results were today, so thank you to OP for reminding me to check!

I can probably defer, right? But will there be the normal deferral process and places if they're already fitting in everyone from last year and maybe this year to April 2022?

Congratulations. Yes, I'm sure you'll be given the chance to defer. I think for the 2020 ballot places, they were going to divide them up for the next 2 or 3 races, so some will get a place for 2021, some will get 2022 and so on. So with that in mind, I guess you may not be guaranteed 2022 but would get one of the next few races.
SohoOrigami · 08/02/2021 18:02

Ah, thank you - that's really helpful, I didn't know that was what they'd done for last year. Makes sense. And actually an extra year would be ok, I might be pushing it for an April marathon given how long it took me to get back to running after last time

AuntieStella · 08/02/2021 18:15

Yes, they split deferrals over the next 3 years, and they are very keen to make sure charity places (silver and gold bond) are honoured.

How on earth it will work if they have to cancel again this year, heaven only knows!

It's October for this year, but meant to be back in April from 2022 onwards. Maybe they'll have to hold two one year?

OrangeBananaFish · 08/02/2021 18:17

6th rejection for me so no surprise. I hate ballot results day. Even though I know it will be a no, it still doesn't stop the hope that maybe, just possibly this time...... Then no. All the while I see posts on FB from people who have got in. While I'm happy for them and certainly don't blame them for posting all excitedly (I'd do the same), I still feel a pang. This only lasts till evening though.

Well there's always the running club route - which again has a lot of people wanting to do it so unlikely.

JaquelineBeanstalk · 09/02/2021 15:27

I’ve got a charity place! It’ll be my first marathon and it was something I wanted to do before my 60th later this year. I’ve done a couple of half’s, but I’m still a little terrified.

AnnPerkins · 09/02/2021 17:04

I’m in. Second time trying. I’d forgotten I’d applied tbh. I was in two minds but figured if I was going to do it it had to be soon because I’m 52 this year, so I’d apply and worry about it if I got a place.

Looks like I’m going to London Grin (if it actually goes ahead)

TheChosenTwo · 10/02/2021 18:11

Oh blimey @OrangeBananaFish - I haven’t posted a thing about it anywhere other than here! I only told dh about it yesterday after knowing about it the day before, no one else cares and no one likes a running bore Confused
