Exercising at home

As the gyms are closed again, and the weather is pretty uninspirational for running, I need some ideas for exercising indoors (especially since I've gained at least 1/2 stone over Xmas!!!)

I enjoy doing weights at the gym mostly, have some kettlebells and looking at getting dumbbells in a heavier weight.

What I need is ideas / inspo for other workouts. Was thinking Pilates or Yoga but no idea where to start with the raft of stuff available on YouTube!

Can anyone recommend any good classes / workouts to watch? Or any other ideas of what I can do?

Fitness Blender have hundreds of free workouts. They are well taught and detailed with instruction so you avoid injury.

Search on here for the Les Mills on demand threads and one had a free two month trial. It gives access to lots of different workouts so you’ll never be bored and quite a few use your weights. It’s great fun.

Skipping rope gives you the cardio of running whilst being just on one spot.

Lucylolly · 03/01/2021 08:49

I use a girl called Sam on YouTube she has dance routines and FB she has strength and weights workouts. Search energise with Sam on YouTube Facebook and Instagram

towers14 · 03/01/2021 08:53

Les Mills on Demand has all the classes I normally do at the gym. Loads of workouts, excellent value for the price. Think you can get a free trial.

For yoga on YouTube try the channel ‘Yoga with Adriane’ her videos are really accessible and in the first lockdown I went from never having done yoga before to following her 30 day programmes and practicing 5 times a week.

She also releases a 30 day yoga journey for each month with a video a day which I like as I just do the next one on the list rather than picking a video for myself!

AliceinBunniland · 03/01/2021 09:19

Les Mills are good

There is a series of workouts on YouTube called body combat invincible and they have profession from shorter vids of ten mins up to a full class. I recommend those.

Another vote for Les Mills on Demand!

I like the idea of Les Mills. Will I need a proper barbell to do Body Pump?

I'm using the Courtney Black app. She's genuinely amazing.i have a PT normally but he's closed at the moment due to restrictions but Courtney has been a fab alternative

Yes for pump you will need equipment, I use it for Attack, Combat, CX Works and Balance. Loads of different workouts for each of these and no equipment needed, maybe a weight for CX.
dementedpixie · 03/01/2021 17:11

You can do pump using dumbbells. It is better with a bar. I bought one in the first lockdown. I do combat, pump and attack through fb with local sports centres and an instructor doing her own online classes.

You will find classes for then on YouTube too

Boopear · 03/01/2021 17:12

You can do BodyPump without a barbell (look at some of the ‘how to’ vids on how to do it with dumbbells) but, imho, using a barbell is better for form. Argos do a good cheapie one, which goes in and out of stock.

Hi :)..I’m a Fitness Trainer & I’ve just set up my own YouTube channel specialising in Yoga & Pilates home workouts for all levels of ability.. All free & show options for beginners to advanced..I just added a 7 Day Pilates for lower abs challenge which is 10 mins per day! Only a few videos so far but I’ll be adding 3 to 4 new ones per week from now on..

channel is ‘yoga & pilates with Jenny Marie’
I recommend ideally every week to do cardio, toning (pilates/weights) & stretching/yoga for best results :)
So many great free videos around on YouTube.
Bodypump is also a great toning workout I would recommend both at home & when gyms are open!
Good luck & enjoy...

hope ok to recommend this! Thank you x

ningaj · 03/01/2021 19:47

@Boopear Yes I've had a look at the Argos one and it's out of stock. Looks like Barbells are like gold dust at the moment!!

They are out of stock everywhere just now. Glad I got mine when I did

delilahbucket · 03/01/2021 21:11

My dp really likes the Fizz Up app for exercising from home. To be honest though, if you like running, get wrapped up and get out. It's so much better for you to be outside.

I really rate this lady: Paula B Fitness

Sorry, it’s Pahla B Fitness

Dumpyandabdabs · 03/01/2021 21:33

I like Pop sugar fitness on you tube. It gives a range of different workouts, everything from pilates to cardio box.

lljkk · 03/01/2021 21:34

I'm in a bit of dormant panic about indoor exercise, if we get such a harsh lockdown such that we're barely allowed to go out.

Due to current injury, I can't do things that involve bending my right leg under load - no squats or turbo trainer or rowing. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than do dance or workout videos or Yoga. I have chronic shoulder problems so no press ups or kettle bells. I can't skip rope.

Just Big Fat Irk. Gardening & cleaning I suppose. Is all that would be left.

PARunnerGirl · 03/01/2021 21:39

I like Les Mills for the classes I am missing at the gym, like Pump, Grit Cardio and Combat. I didn’t buy the Les mills equipment for pump but something cheaper that works nearly as well (not as fast to change weights but I just pause the video).

I love Kayla Itsines app though. So many different programs from body weight circuits to heavy lifting to CrossFit type training to Barre and yoga. I also follow her diet plan and have done for a few years (not at the weekend though when I chill out a bit!). This was the app that helped me lose 40lbs and get to a healthy weight.

PARunnerGirl · 03/01/2021 21:41

But agree with a pp about running (if you enjoy it)! The weather has been freezing but beautiful here recently and I’ve clocked up quite a lot of Kms because it has been so enjoyable to be out.
