Getting back into running - anyone with me?

SweetestThing · 28/04/2019 19:06

Watching the London Marathon today prompted me to think seriously about how to get back into running. I used to run several times a week and have run London several times but in recent years, my exercise has been sporadic, with runs of only a few miles and lots of hiatuses.

I've now entered the ballot for next year's London (confidently predicting my eleventy billionth rejection) but have decided I need to have something to aim for before then, so have booked in for a half-marathon in September. So I need to get a training plan in place, sort out my diet and weight (currently carrying about two stone over my running weight) and cross-train.

Anyone fancy joining me in a virtual support and training plan?

Morning, all. Good running, Viva. You're going great guns! I managed a short two mile run just after five this morning -so lovely to be out as the world is waking up! Circuit class on Tuesday night was a bit brutal so I've had some DOMS for the past couple of days but onwards and upwards.

On my phone so can't remember who said what, but anyone who's had a blip, press the reset button and don't feel bad. My reset button is almost worn out, but I reckon any exercise I do is better than nothing. Keep on keeping on!

On the train to work for another exciting day at the fun factory...have good days, everyone.

I fly back from Spain today! Will run tomorrow. Going to be tough as far too much food and drink has been consumed. And I smoke on holiday so the lungs won't be happy 😬

Nothingoriginalhere · 18/05/2019 08:20

Week 4 c25k completed and several long brisk walks, still in spain until Monday but as yet no achillies issues so hoping that doong the slow return to running via c25k is working!
But jeez the hills here......I'm a limcolnshire girl - not used to hills!

Clarke45 · 19/05/2019 09:01

Just ran 5k!!! Managed 2.5 miles in the week so thought I would go for it! It wasn't fast but who cares!

VivaFrida · 19/05/2019 10:15

Well done clarke45 and well done all.

I am having a tough time in RL. Work related troubles. I have a very very heavy heart. So I am finding it difficult to run. Distance running is so much a mind thing. If you are positive and think you can do it... you can do it! But my confidence has taken yet another knock recently so I am finding it hard. But I am determined that this is not going to beat me and I am forcing myself out of the door. 10km today. Done. It will get better.

I’ve not run for a week. TMI but I had a Mirena in almost a week ago and have been feeling crampy, bloated and moody ever since. Is this normal? Anyone had any experiences with this? I’m struggling to find the motivation to run while I’m feeling this crappy.

Clarke45 · 19/05/2019 19:17

(Sorry- don't know how to add a name!) I had the mirena coil fitted last Monday - it was agony!! I'm still suffering with cramps and feel bloated aswell. I went Spinning on Wednesday- big mistake! Luckily I don't feel any pain running. Hopefully the side effects will wear off soon.

Calixtine · 19/05/2019 20:21

@Clarke45 Ah, sorry to hear you’re suffering too! Hopefully it’s just teething problems. Was hoping the Mirena was going to be the magic bullet but if I’m still feeling like this at my 6w check up it will be coming out! The insertion was actually OK for me but I’m only 12weeks pp so maybe everything’s still a bit loose Blush (Note to self: do pelvic floors!) I’m going to force myself to go out tomorrow regardless and see how I get on.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/05/2019 20:50

My friend has had her Mirena for a month and has bled the whole time so far 😫

I've got the copper coil and it didn't do anything like that.

Tattoosandmemories · 19/05/2019 21:12

Can I join in?? I've got a 10k in about 6 weeks... I signed up ages ago as motivation and so far life has got in the way and I've barely done any training! Confused

SweetestThing · 20/05/2019 07:19

Morning all and welcome to new travellers on our running journey. No plodding for me at the weekend as I ended up knitting a more complicated than expected cardigan for a friend who's just had a prem baby so that took up literally the entire weekend! I'm not the greatest knitter in the world but wanted to do something personal

Still trying to low carb. Funnily enough, I'm not missing bread or pasta etc but do miss fruit. I'm keeping the egg and avocado producers in business, however 😁

Planning on getting off the train a stop early on the way home tonight and walking the last few miles home. Slightly undulating route with the uphills at the beginning. Just over four miles.

What are everyone's goals this week? We're off to France for the bank holiday weekend and I'm taking my running gear. We have a day of walking planned too. Diet will go to pot, I'm sure (baguettes and wine!) But life is for enjoying, isn't it?

Fellow plodders, it's great to see you all progressing on your plod paths. Hope all those with coil problems get sorted - I had a copper coil fitted nearly 30 years ago and it didn't give me a moment's trouble. Should probably get it removed now as I'm post- menopause!!

Happy Monday, all.

Hi there, how's everyone doing?

I must report a (so far) glorious weekend of running for me:
14.5km on Friday
7.5 km intervals o the treadmill on Saturday
16.5km long slow run today!

I got back into running on May 6, I would never have thought I'd be doing so well so quickly. I am still 1.30-2minutes x mile slower than my older pace but I am not in a hurry to get back there. I am running for me. I am happy.

Tattoosandmemories · 26/05/2019 15:12

@VivaFrida that's so impressive! When had you last run before May?

I was pleased with my 3k in the heat yesterday! 14k just seems so far off for me. 😂

VivaFrida · 26/05/2019 16:55

Thank you Tattoosandmemories! Well done on your 3km!!

I have not ran for about 5 years. I had a very good 2014 season - then my life changed.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 26/05/2019 17:05

Ill join this thread for extra chat if ok? Restarted about 10 weeks ago and just did Manchester half marathon last weekend. Very very slowly but I did it and whilst I do t normally enjoy the run while it’s happening, I do like the effects. I’m 2 stone overweight though and it’s HARD. I’m a snacking booze lover too.

Calixtine · 26/05/2019 17:10

Viva You’re doing so well! Star

I’m doing terribly! I haven’t run for a week, again. Mirena issues still ongoing: I’ve been bleeding heavily for a week now. I don’t think it’s a “real” period because I’m EBF my 3mo, but it’s still a pain! @Clarke45 how are you getting on with it?

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 26/05/2019 20:33

Ill get out tomorrow hopefully. Feel like it all starts again now. 10k signed up for in July and I would love to beat 1:02 my best ever but in reality will settle for longer. The weight loss attempt starts this week too. It’s lovely to have people to share with

Tattoosandmemories · 26/05/2019 20:56

Goodness, Vida that's an amazing comeback! Grin

The last time I ran a single step was September 2017 and I was early days pregnant so much has happened since!

Whoops that's incredible. I've never done a half, let alone as a 'starter'! Smile

Clarke45 · 27/05/2019 12:50

Mine has settled down- no pain anymore and no bleeding...... now I need to focus on upping my running!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 27/05/2019 19:51

I've been lazy this week. I'm on night shifts and I'm just so tired.

So today I entered a local 10 mile race. It's not til September. But I know the fear of not doing well will make me train 😂

It's one I've did a few times when I was a "proper" runner so I know the course at least. 10 miles was always my favourite distance to race. I'm going to make myself a little training plan and stick to it 👍🏻

SweetestThing · 06/06/2019 08:46

Have we all disappeared??!!

I've been totally rubbish over the past couple of weeks. Wedding anniversary coincided with a long weekend in France where we did a lot of walking but also a lot of eating and drinking gorgeous French food and wine. Then back to work and husband's birthday, so more food and wine. Haven't done any running but I am doing at least 10k steps a day and yesterday did 16k, so I'm still moving.

Back on the LCHF diet since Monday. So far I'm being quite diligent and haven't missed anything but I'm wfh today and that can be dangerous, so I have boiled a couple of eggs for when I feel peckish and am filling up by drinking lots of water.

chesney, I always liked 10 mile race distance - long enough to get a good rhythm going but not as far as a half marathon!

How is everyone else doing?

Tattoosandmemories · 06/06/2019 11:25

I'm still here @SweetestThing !

I have in fact just signed up to do a half marathon Confused . I've found a 12 week training plan online but i'm going to repeat the first 3 weeks to extend it to 15 weeks which will take me up to the 1/2.

Does it look about right? I've no clue having never done this sort of distance before.

I've also discovered I have Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism so i'm wondering how that will effect my training...

Getting back into running - anyone with me?
Chesneyhawkes1 · 06/06/2019 12:13

I've been running 5 miles every other day so far. I'll up one run a week slowly til it's over 10 miles. And make one a tempo type run.

Once I've got 6 weeks of regular running under my belt I'll start some intervals. See if I can get some speed back in the legs 😂

So far, so good!

SweetestThing · 07/06/2019 18:35

HI Chesney and Tattoos. Good to hear from you both. Good running there, Chesney., you're going great guns. Tattoos, I think your training plan sounds good. Take it slowly to begin with - do you mean you will do week 1 twice, then week 2 twice etc, rather than weeks 1, 2 and 3, and then do them all again?

Another quiet day for me. Not at work today but the weather was foul so I did housey stuff all day. DS came home with a stomach bug so I've been taking him up water, filling up his hot water bottle etc and checking he's okay. Early start tomorrow to give our neighbour a lift to Gatwick at 6; lucky I'm an early riser!

I plan to do a run or go to the gym tomorrow. Really must get back into a routine.

OP posts:
Chesneyhawkes1 · 09/06/2019 19:03

Did you manage to get out @SweetestThing ?

Getting into a routine is the hardest part I find. Once I'm in one it's easy and I hate missing a day.

But when I'm not, every tiny little thing is a reason not to run and to wait until tomorrow.

Had a busy day out with DH and DSS today, so I set my alarm and went out early. They walked the dogs whilst I ran.

Told myself just a quick 5 miles as felt tired but once I got going felt good so did 7.5.

I've started using the Nike run app and I really like it. It has some guided speed work stuff on there I'm going to try.
