We've filled up the first Swimming for fitness thread, so here is the new one.

Everyone welcome.

omg, do you have a wetsuit?
(too lazy to search back thru thread).
I LOVE that saying "No fools in the pool". Will tuck it away.

rightsofwomen · 13/04/2017 09:17

I do not have a wet suit, but I have lots of friends who do!

Sounds great, Rights. Feeling guilty as I didn't go this morning. My husband and I had a late evening out in London, and the children had a sleepover at my parents' so the chance of a lie-in was just too tempting. Will catch up next week.

Hissy · 13/04/2017 13:14

nice one rights!! you will need a neutral buoyancy suit.

Have a look at Alpkit. I just got one from there, it's a 3/3mm suit, costs £99

Bargain!

You know, my local pool has zero public/casual sessions today - school hols. Bizarre I think. Wanted to go with DS2

No swimming for me this week or next. Giving my shoulder a rest and we're away next week to a place with no pool. There are opportunities for open water swimming there but not sure it'd be wise to go alone even if I was brave enough (or had a wetsuit).

CMOTDibbler · 15/04/2017 21:34

Can I join? One of my local lidos opened on Friday, and as ds and dh were off at a gaming festival I had unlimited time to swim in what was mostly the sun (very chilly out of the water though). Did 4km in largely well behaved lanes, and the 50m pool was fab.

I've entered a few swimming events this year, including Swim Serpentine - can't wait to get in the lake in 2 weeks!

BestIsWest · 15/04/2017 21:54

Wow, welcome CMOT, great distance.

rightsofwomen · 15/04/2017 22:07

CMOT you may only join if you tell me what cmot stand for!

4K?! THUD! How long did that take?

I think we can learn a lot from you so I hope you stick around.

I did my 1K today. Just me and a super speedy guy in the lane. In face I have done 3 (x 1K) this week.
Back to clock watching and juggling and having to carve out exercise time next week. Sob.

CMOT is 'Cut me own throat Dibbler' - he's a Terry Pratchett character who is always trying a new enterprise, somewhat unsuccessfully. He then goes back to selling 'sausage inna bun' on the streets.

I did 4k in just under 2 hours - the first 2km was a new pb for me. I've been working hard on my swimming since I've been injured and off running, and it seems to be paying off. Next coaching session will be in the lake, so it'll be interesting to see if I can do everything as well in a proper wetsuit.

It'll be hotel pool swimming for me next week as I'm off for work.

Lovely session on Saturday, hardly anyone in the pool!

Took the lovely boyf and his dd to swimming pool today with another swim friend, a superb afternoon

Now awaiting roast 😋

Oh... did I show you all the lake I want? Comes with a house and land too...

Boyf says it's too close to the road... says it's too noisy... pah! When you're in the lake you won't hear a thing.... isn't that all that matters?

Another vote for Easter Saturdays in the pool... there were only 2 of us most of the time at lanes last night. Shock

rightsofwomen · 16/04/2017 22:00

hissy LTB - he clearly has no idea of your needs! Wink

Easter Monday was also a good day for visiting the pool. Nice and quiet and I did 2km in 40 mins. Welcome CMOT!

Hissy · 17/04/2017 17:20

I know rights I'll just have to spend my own £2m.... Grin

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 17/04/2017 22:35

Hi!

So I finally bit the bullet and did a sea swim with my friend this evening. We only stayed in about 5 mins (it was BALTIC, and no wetsuits either) - water was about 9 degrees. But it was fabulous. We swam off the '40 foot', a beautiful part of the Dublin coastline with a purpose built area for bathers to enter some really deep but sheltered water. I have only just warmed up 2 hours later, but already looking forward to my next dip. Another few degrees warmer would be nice though Grin

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 17/04/2017 22:40

The 40 foot ... South Dublin.

Good god! You utter nutter hero!

rightsofwomen · 18/04/2017 10:43

hammers you have raised the bar!
Well done. Are you warm yet?

I shall swim at lunch time today. My leg is sore and I am freaking out I've got another stress fracture.

OP posts:
FacelikeaBagofHammers · 18/04/2017 10:56

LOL, just about rights

I was afraid to stay in too long. Once I got past the 'I'm going to die, my body is being stabbed by a million knives' stage, it started to feel quite nice. And I was wondering if that nice feeling was just onset hypothermia Grin Grin Anyway even after 5 mins, my hands and feet were numb getting out.

There is a buoy about 100m from the shore which might be a nice goal for next time. Still a bit wary of heading out in a group of 2 so might wait for a bigger gang next time, since I don't know the water.

Waste not, want not!

Bet I've saved myself about about a fiver 20p!

1K done at lunch time. Was very busy, but fortunately we were all well behaved and courteous and pretty much swimming at similar speeds. Then about 15 mins before the session ended everyone vanished.

Hello! Went swimming yesterday morning and my goggles were leaking in the first few lengths (I've been finding I need to be more careful with getting them no right now that I wear a swimming cap). Anyway, I had to stop at the end of a length to adjust them and apologised to a man who had just let me pass him that I was stopping again. I said I was 'having goggle trouble' and he said not to worry as he had 'trouble with just one arm and one leg'. I then noticed that his one arm stopped at the elbow but couldn't quite see his leg in the water. Huge respect …

CMOTDibbler · 19/04/2017 14:36

Wowsers on the sea swimming! Thats one of the things I would like to do this year. But will have to be content with the lake first - just seen my local lake opens on the 30th (but I am a weedy type who will be wearing a wetsuit).
My hotel has a 12.5m pool, but actually has a roped off lane, so I trundled up and down for an hour yesterday which was nice. I can see the sea from my hotel window, but I think it would be seriously cold!
