Arghhh! Woken up this morning with shoulder pain. Last swam on weds night. So it's either a delayed reaction or I've buggered it up some other way without realising. Fell off my bike last night and got cramp as I stood myself up too!! It's all going wrong with a week till the race SadConfused

beepbeepimasheep · 03/06/2017 09:13

I'm starting swimming this week, may I join you?

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 09:13

Swimming makes my bad shoulder better, sometimes.
I bet the fall of the bike wrenched your shoulder a bit.
Advice now on most things is keep moving, don't go for complete rest. Hang in there.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 03/06/2017 09:29

Hello beepbeep! There's a real mixed bag on here so everyone is welcome.

Thanks brexit the fall off my bike was really slow Blush, I was just getting going again after a stop and wobbled while I was getting my feet back in the toe clips! I plan on swim/bike/run this week but nothing strenuous so hoping I don't aggravate anything.

beepbeepimasheep · 03/06/2017 10:50

Thank you Smile🐠🏊‍♀️

igottastarthinkgbee
I had a buggered up shoulder for a good 6 months, 2 sessions with a sports osteopath put it right, i have full movement back, dont know why i didnt go earlier.
I went for a swim this morning and did 56 lengths, but it got a bit too busy so i left.

pombal · 03/06/2017 18:08

Hello can I jump in too?
I swam lengths for the first time in ages today. I have been running but it's too hot here now 29 degrees (not uk), so I'm thinking of switching to swimming for few months.

I swam breaststroke and front crawl, took me about half an hour to swim 1k.

Can I get faster without lessons?
I'd have lessons but it's really not something adults do here.

CountFosco · 04/06/2017 17:19

Hello, I've been lurking on this thread and the previous one for ages but haven't posted. I swam before I had kids but since I got back into it after my youngest was born it's become much more important to me. I swim 4 times a week for about half an hour and do about 1km in that time.

Last summer I tried to race DD1 (8 at time and just joined the local swimming club) and she completely beat me at the front crawl so have been working on that since then. I now alternate 200m sets of breaststroke and frontcrawl during my swims with a couple of lengths of backstroke to cool down a bit before I get out. I no longer feel like my heart is about to burst out of my chest at the end of 25m of front crawl but I'm still not fast. Today a woman was doing a doggy paddle and was faster than me - how is that possible??? Teaches you humility does swimming.

So impressed by the wild swimmers here. We've got a local heated lido so am planning on taking the kids this summer, but they have done wild swimming in the north of Scotland so are old hands at that!

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2017 17:28

How was everyones weekend of swimming?

I did a mile this afternoon in a lake, totally pleased with myself! DH had gone out v early for a cycling event, so couldn't go to my usual venue, but ds had declared he wanted to go kayaking today. I found a lake with a permanent swim area and kayak hire where I didn't need to be supervising, so win/win! Slightly rustic facilities, but lovely water quality - really quite clear inspite of the rain, and a very fair price.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 04/06/2017 19:19

Hello count! I had a similar wake up call the other day. Raced my 10 year old nephew, he was faster than me a crawl and backstroke!

CMOT that sounds like the dream, activity for you and DS! My kids are pretty young still (4 and 2) so that kind of flexibility is a looong way off. And a mile in a lake, impressive!

I've had a swim in our local non heated lido today. Tried it with and without the wetsuit as I was just so slow in the wetsuit. Felt a bit panicked to start with but settled eventually. I found it easier to swim without the wetsuit (and it really wasn't too cold once I was in) but I'm still slow. I think my wetsuit just isn't tight enough and slows me down even more. Bit late to change it now. We had the start lists for the triathlon the other day, there are 50 people in my wave Shock I didn't think there would be so many in the water at once!! And my wave is the last of five waves (with around 50 people in each wave) starting at 5 minute intervals. So I don't know what the likelihood is that we'll be catching up with the other waves is, but that's a lot of people in a smallish section of lake!!

pombal · 04/06/2017 19:24

count my 9 year old can beat me Shock
He is in a swimming club.
I think it's hard to get the technique they have as an adult.

Hissy · 04/06/2017 19:53

Saw this on the fb mile group today!

Am off to masters in a moment, going swimming at the lake tomorrow with adorable boyf

It's due to rain... romantic

Hissy I love that sign!

lljkk · 05/06/2017 19:15

Ha! @ sign. I am resisting urge to make my own version.

Hissy · 05/06/2017 21:47

Do it lijkk!! It's fabulous

Dunno who did it, they're a genius!

CountryCaterpillar · 05/06/2017 22:30

Welcome beep and pombal

Ive been away for a week and really missed swimming! I've been in a pool but it's a kids pool with a rapids, fun but not the same. Amazing to see how my 5 year old is coming on though, she's brilliant!!!

I decided to go this evening and "just see how I do." I swam 56 lengths in an hour and only just twigged my pool is 25m not 20 so I'm swimming further than I think! Not as fast as the 1k in 30 min folks though.

There were some adult lessons going on and I did wonder about trying those in months to come when I'm less huge and a bit faster. For a blissful 15minutes I had the non-lesson half of the pool to myself. It was wonderful. Truly wondeful :)

CountryCaterpillar · 05/06/2017 22:32

Hissy. I can tick okay to the flowchart. but I'm not fast enough for the fast lane!! One day. I'm still nervous of lanes in general!!

BestIsWest · 06/06/2017 07:16

Me too Caterpillar

CMOTDibbler · 06/06/2017 10:33

I satisfy the criteria, but don't dare enter the fast lane! At my local pool I'm medium, at the Lido I'm slow (and thats with an extra fast lane).

Back at the lake tonight - might be a bit chilly with all the rain we've had today, but weirdly I can't wait.

SingingAvocado · 07/06/2017 10:26

I'm back and back in the pool after a half term break. A big welcome to beep, pombal and count. Love your sign, Hissy. I did the fast lane yesterday for my whole swim and managed ok. Let three people go past me once each over the course of 60 lengths which didn't feel too embarrassing.

rightsofwomen · 08/06/2017 14:47

Hello hello hello.

I'm still around, just keeping my head down a bit.
I think our slow lane must be quite slow as I always go in it and I am not that fast.

OP posts:
pombal · 08/06/2017 15:51

So 1k yesterday and 800m this morning but slow.

I could really feel my shoulder the other day after swimming crawl for half an hour, so stuck to backstroke and breaststroke.

I'm sure this is due to my crappy technique.
Have been reading smoothswim website to try and improve it.

Hissy · 08/06/2017 23:57

Had an amazing session in the lake on Monday!

It rained, it hailed, there were waves, the coach was worth her weight in gold, she was awesome!

It was about the most romantic thing boyf and I have ever done!

Just got back from masters, another good session, i am learning to relax and it is really helping my swim.

We're going to be focusing on technique in the next few weeks

Bit of (my) fluffy lane rule making for your amusement. I hope this is legible.
