10,000 steps every day - anyone with me?

JustABigBearAlan · 31/12/2015 16:04

Have decided -as part of my 'new year, new me' mission- that I'm going to ensure I do at least 10,000 steps every day without fail.

I got a fitbit a few months ago and love it. Up to now I've mainly been monitoring it in a mildly interested way though, rather than really making an effort to increase what I normally do Blush

Some days I do the 10,000 steps no problem, but not every day, so am determined to do extra to make sure I do. I'm also aiming to run 3x a week and improve my diet.

Anyone with me on the steps?

How do you all manage to get to 10k so effortlessly?! I work from home with children at secondary school, so no work or school run (although on the odd occasion I have to go into the city centre I cycle). I try to go for a long brisk walk most days although living in a city it's hard to think where to go. Today I had to buy some milk & bread so instead of going to the corner shop I walked all the way to the supermarket - a round trip of at least 5km. I've been up & down stairs, and cooking etc. My iphone app tells me I've done just under 7k steps with a distance of 6km. It's now dark so I can't go for a walk and anyway I have to do some work! These figures are about average per day for me if I manage to fit in the long walk. If I don't I only clock up 3-4k steps.
I really don't have time to spend 3 hours walking every day! I'm beginning to think I'll have to go back to slow jogging running... Sad

My DH struggles to get to 10k too, and is not inactive. I think it is because he has a much longer stride than me - we are going to go on a walk together this weekend and compare (also to compare distances measured, for interest and as an indicator of accuracy). Are you tall?

dustyanswer · 08/01/2016 17:26

Ah, yes, fairly - 5'8". I try to take small quick steps as my natural inclination is fast striding so perhaps I'm lapsing back into that without realising. That makes me feel a bit better!

I only manage it thanks to school runs and ferrying the DCs to other activities, most of which are within half a mile or so of home. I know I'm going to struggle when they're both at secondary and getting to all their activities under their own steam which will be in a couple of years time. My step count drops off dramatically in the school holidays.

I do find lots of short journeys much more effective at totting up steps than one big one, but all my local short journeys are on the level, so I probably get more benefit if I do head further afield for a long one and incorporate some hills.

Managed 10k for first time in over 3 weeks today, but it's taken me 120 active minutes & reckons I walked 7.7km. Not sure how you fit it into less time, except running? I had to jog up & down the landing to get the last 2k steps...

My fitbit flex arrives tmrw and I'm really going it gives me the kick up the arse I need. Hoping to do 10k a day. Eeeeek. ..

Seawig · 10/01/2016 17:11

Just got myself a Fitbit charge hr to try and make myself more active.

I've been going to the gym twice a week for a year which has made me feel loads better, but now I need to more active across my whole week, not just for 2 gym hours!

First day today and I only have 4,148 steps so off to the gym now and hoping that helps!

London for work tomorrow, tubes and tunnels good, sitting on the train there and back for 4 hours and sitting in meetings not so good!

cleanmachine · 10/01/2016 21:17

Sea its my first day too and I managed 10500 fairly easily. I'd love to busy up with you on the app if you've got it?

DoreenLethal · 10/01/2016 22:54

Ive done my 70,000 for the week, and my 210 of active minutes for the week, so very happy indeed. Done 3 outdoor runs, got drenched last night but it was exhilarating. Still doing treadmill when it is too wet, and now onto one of the programmes that comes with it. And feeling much more fit already.

cleanmachine · 11/01/2016 11:23

Would anyone like to friend me on the fitbit app? I have no friends and would love some company.

JustABigBearAlan · 11/01/2016 13:16

Yes clean. I'm not quite sure how to though!

Neither do I. Oh dear. My username is the same as here. Is yours? I could try searching for you.

Helenluvsrob · 11/01/2016 16:41

Managed to average 10k a day for the last week. Quite pleased with that but it's been hard work!

slightlyglitterbrained · 11/01/2016 17:18

Managed to get 10k for the last 4 days. Going to be a struggle to fit it in for the next 4 though.

Noticing I feel less tired on 10k days!

JustABigBearAlan · 11/01/2016 23:01

I've jsut looked up how to add friends! clean if you want to pm me your email address, I should be able to add you.

I've managed to do my 10,000 steps every day since New Year, but I frequently have to go for a late night run/walk to get there! I do feel really motivated at the moment though, and feel so much better for doing it.

9,261 today which is a big improvement on the last few which were around 5k.

Today I got to the gym so all those extra running steps must have done it. It's really hard to fit in as I drive 3 hours for work today, did the school run in the car to make work, took a child to Brownies in the car and back to prevent her sibling having to walk an hour in the rain, sat in a meeting for 2 hours......DH not home yet so going to walk about the house but also need to read stories!

Working from home tomorrow so going to have to do some walking on the spot while emailing!

cleanmachine · 13/01/2016 08:46

Walking on the spot is good to make up extra steps but. Try one of the youtube walking videos to make it more of a workout.

Helenluvsrob · 13/01/2016 13:22

damn the frosty slippy weather today, Not managed to walk much before work but going now for a stroll. Hope yjr frost has gone

DoreenLethal · 13/01/2016 15:56

I have been doing the accounts today so am going to be lucky to make 5000 - but have been doing more than my 10k every day. Got two busy days coming up so will make up for it tomorrow.

cleanmachine · 14/01/2016 13:22

It's so much harder when you have to make the steps up at home. I prefer going for a early walk but is not always possible. Today I've don't some housework and running on the spot aand got to 8k but it's been boring.

Seawig · 14/01/2016 22:58

Just 5k today due to work meeting all day and long drive there and back.

DH is getting one however so we can compete!

madwomanbackintheattic · 16/01/2016 04:47

Made my steps up tonight after I got home (and then persuaded dh we should take the dogs round the block after dinner) so 12300. Still have some to make up over the weekend to reach the average though. Finding it pretty hard on work days!

madwomanbackintheattic · 16/01/2016 04:49

I bought dh one for Christmas, seawig. He is not quite as motivated as he could be Grin

DoreenLethal · 17/01/2016 15:59

A few shorter runs this week, but just come in form my first daylight run - 1.4 miles. Very chuffed with that. Very cold out there though today - hands went red and nails went blue...

dustyanswer · 27/01/2016 16:51

Reading some of the posts since mine and I really don't get it! madwoman gets 2,300 just from going round the block, cleanmachine gets to 8k by doing housework & running on the spot at home??? Where do you live, cleanmachine, Buck Palace? Grin Yesterday I had my highest tally. I went for a 5km run, walked to the shops & back, & generally walked around at home, up & down stairs etc. Now, I think that is pretty bloody active. Didn't make it to 10k (9.5) so I don't know WTF is going on. This is going by the Health app on my iphone.
