Just popped over to say to those doing 5:2 fasting and not losing. I did 6 weeks of 5:2 and didn't lose. I was also very ratty by the evening of the fast days. I ditched it, had a week off then started calorie counting & C25k at the same time. I have just finished week 5 today and have lost 8lbs in that time!

I know 5:2 works for many but clearly not all as it didn't for me!

BIWI · 10/07/2013 18:10

I tried 5:2 briefly, but hated it. It led to me obsessing about calories, which I vowed never to do again.

Much better off with my normal low carbing.

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2013 21:07

jussey I usually have two rest days between runs. I just feel I need two recovery days before I'm ready to run again. Last year when I got injured I had been going with the one rest day. Might be coincidence, but a two day break seems to be working for me this time. I don't even mind if I have three days off, but I don't leave it longer than that.

cinnamongreyhound · 10/07/2013 22:44

Was going to say the same jussey17, could you be going too fast? Take it steady and I agree with moving on even if you find the run hard :)

Do you use the app travellingwilbury? I didn't like it when I used it so I use the mobile website. It just has an m somewhere but when I go to mn it asks if you'd like to use the mobile site and I click yes.

I would have thought trying to run on a fast day would be a bad idea. If a run burns 300 calories and you're only taking in 500 then you will not have a lot of energy left. I personally think the best way to lose weight is calorie counting, know how much is going in doesn't matter if its mostly chocolate as long as its less than is going out you will lose weight.

Committee meeting was too long so no running for me today. If I can persuade dh to take boys to gymnastics ill run then if not I will go 6.30am Friday. Then park run Saturday, lets hope for a pb, although forecast I've seen says 28C here sat!!!!!!!!!

Hurrah I did the whole of week 4 by going slower thanks for the advice. Previously the middle 3 minutes regularly defeated me because it coincides with a long slow incline. Today the cooler weather helped and although i was feeling terrible for the first 3 minutes (also uphill on my route back from nursery) I made it. Very pleased.
Have now completed week 4 about 4 times properly and about 5 times poorly, should I move on or try to get 2more good runs in.
Also can I ask if anyone else has trouble with the iPod app I have had to put the apps on my phone because I can never find and access the app on iPod. The phone option has the disadvantage that the app now starts whenever my phone rings.
I'm deeply in awe of anyone who can be conscious at 6:30am.

watchingout · 11/07/2013 16:57

Well done Jussey Smile lol at the thought of 'welcome to week 4' blasting out every time your phone rings Grin

Sounds like you've done week 4 to death - give week 5 a go. Your body is ready, you just need to convince your mind... and loads of others have done this program safely so I'm damn sure you can too. Keep your speed comfortable for you and push on through Flowers

cinnamongreyhound · 11/07/2013 17:06

Definitely move on to week 5 and I used the podcast rather than app. No idea about your other ipod problems I'm afraid!

nextphase · 11/07/2013 18:40

Try week 5!

If the hills are really defeating you, can you start up the hill, and then before it gets too tough, turn around so you go back down the hill, and then walk back up the hill afterwards if thats the way you need to get home? And build up how much hill you do?

And I'm talking as someone who rejoices when the hill is on a walking, but think I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to be running up and down all the hills... Flat route tonight for w6r3 methinks!

amigababy · 11/07/2013 19:40

good luck nextphase. that's me on Saturday. I really enjoyed w6r2 today. I am getting the bug Smile

when I got home I sat and played on map my run, planning possible runs for the future when I've graduated.

jussey17 · 11/07/2013 19:41

Thanks guys I will try to move on to week 5. I have been trying to fix my route so that the down hill coincides with the 5min runs which may explain some of the problems as I am walking quite fast to try to fix my route. Think 3x5 minute may actually be easier that 3:5:3:5, or is this inexperience talking.
Next phase I do think flat makes a huge difference as when I run around a flat car park (when my ds is at gymnastics rather than my usual undulating route) completing the run is usually possible though never easy.

Dingle · 11/07/2013 20:27

Note to self; must cut toenails more often!!!!!

Just done W5R3 with a bloody toe! LOL Blush There was no way I was going to stop though. Managed to keep going for the 20 mins Shock and kept to my 4.5/5mph pace.

Still loving it. Thank you ladies. xx

Bakingnovice · 11/07/2013 20:56

Well done Jussey and dingle!

I forgot my iPod today so instead of starting week 6 I did a random run of 5 walking, 10 running, 5 walking, 5running, 5 cool down. It felt ok but for the humidity. Sweated loads and absolutely loved the cold shower straight after bliss. Did anyone else find the run after the 20 min run easy? That 20 min did something to my stamina!

hairtwiddler · 11/07/2013 20:57

Evening all! Just back from first run of 5k plus prog. It was odd to be back to intervals but I really enjoyed the short bursts of going faster and the walks were welcome! I did just under 5k tonight but included my warm up walk.
Breathing was tougher this evening. Probably the carbtastic Hugh FW potato pasta dish I ate earlier! Not a great idea.

Race for life getting closer, 21st July. Really looking forward to it.

Those of you worrying about moving on a week, do move on. Take it easy, and stop for 30 sec walk if it gets too much.

watchingout · 11/07/2013 21:15

I found w6r1 really hard even after THE 20 min...

watchingout · 11/07/2013 21:21

Shhh

But I had a little trip to Decathlon tonight and have now got some really lightweight trainers and running shirt. Be running on air tomorrow morning Grin

nextphase · 11/07/2013 21:32

Baking
I found w6r1 easier, but I commented above that it sounded like it was going to be easy going compared to the 20mins, and got warned that many people struggled, so maybe proceed with caution.

amiga and watching(if my maths is right). Have fun on w6r3.
I'm on NHS podcasts, and for the last minute, it was suggested that if you were feeling OK, you upped the pace, so I crossed the road, and upped the pace for the last 30sec or so.

Did go for the flatter route that doesn't involve streams etc, but was out for 37 mins (warm up, run, cool down), and got over 5km! Now, faster hahahahaha!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/07/2013 21:44

Everyone's doing so well!!

I went for a 40min run tonight, averaged 5m30 per km and I can feel it now!

hairtwiddler · 11/07/2013 21:54

Wow cinnamon! That's fast. I wouldn't see you for dust!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/07/2013 22:10

Pretty much the slowest at my club :( :( :(

OP posts:
hairtwiddler · 11/07/2013 22:15

They'd never let me in!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/07/2013 22:17

Anyone's welcome, they are all lovely but its rubbish being last/slowest all the time!

OP posts:
watchingout · 12/07/2013 08:03

Just done w6r3 but gutted that I managed to pause mapmyrun after 6 secs so haven't a clue how far I ran as I took a new route. Cross country as well. Gah.

Still got complimented I think by DD on return. " it's definitely working Mum, you're not half as red as you were a couple of weeks ago" Blush

hairtwiddler · 12/07/2013 08:52

My legs are complaining about being made to go faster than snail pace yesterday. It's going to be a hot day so drink lots especially if running in heat.

hairtwiddler · 12/07/2013 08:53

Watching Grin at your dd

BIWI · 12/07/2013 09:52
Grin

Not going running today as I had a gym/personal trainer session this morning. Will probably be going on Saturday or Sunday, depending on how hot it is/how early I manage to get up! I have a Chinese class on Saturday that's usually at 10 but tomorrow is at 9, so unless something miraculous happens, I suspect I'll be going on Sunday morning
