Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

Well done Jelli, a short run is better than no run, mine was only about 2.5k too and half of that was walking.

I got a good tip today from a mum at school who runs. We were discussing trainers and gait analysis, she said she got hers done at the shop and bought the shoes there, but has now picked up a couple more identical pairs half price in the Go Outdoors sale which should keep her going for a couple more years (she runs a lot longer distances than me). Just found some of mine in the same way, going to check Ebay as well, now I really will have to keep it up.

Well done WhoKnows and Jelli! And great tip on shoes Whoknows.

Thanks jelli Grin. go on. you know you want to do it! DH's boss wrote a very large cheque today for the charity we're running for (he's more than doubled our total so far Shock), so the pressure is mounting Grin.

I do read other threads. but I don't really post anywhere else.

LinzerTorte · 19/01/2012 07:57

I've decided to start C25k again using the Bupa plan. I've just downloaded the Runkeeper app so am about to programme in W1R1. No time to run today, however, as I've got a friend coming over and needed to cook dinner (well, lunch) beforehand plus it's pouring with rain and no time tomorrow either as we're taking DD1 to a secondary school open day in the morning. But I shall start next week. Anyone else restarting?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/01/2012 08:53

I'm planning to intersperse the C25K (or Bupa) runs with my normal 30 min runs Linzer. Pouring with rain here too today.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 19/01/2012 13:10

Morning all!

Linzer, I'm re-starting properly at the end of Jan. I did W1R1 this morning, but as the wind chill made it -7 there wasn't much difference between my slow pace and my slightly less slow "fast" pace - it was all I could do to breathe.

Enjoy your lunch, and hope that the visit to secondary school goes well for DD1. What age do they go up where you are?

LinzerTorte · 19/01/2012 13:47

Good to hear that there are a few others restarting. I'm planning on doing W1R1 on Monday, weather/illness/work etc. etc. permitting. Although perhaps I'll be keen and start at the weekend. Grin

Had a lovely morning with my friend. She's ridiculously fit so I was quite reassured to hear that she doesn't go running in the winter and "just" does 20 minutes of yoga instead. Despite her winter break, she still managed to beat me by about five minutes in the 3.2k race last summer.

Shredded Children start secondary school at 10 here, so only have four years at primary school. We're going to look at a grammar school tomorrow, but middle school (i.e. the alternative to grammar school) is a more likely option due to DD1's dyslexia.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/01/2012 22:30

I have been nail varnish shopping again today, just thought I'd tell you all. No running though.

OP posts:
jellibelli · 20/01/2012 18:33

No nail news from me Blush today. I did manage to 6W6P yesterday but it was of course AFTER work and not first thing in the morning. I have just got in from work and am having a quick MN before doing some BFBM. Now I have written I will have to do it - and pretty soon as I am hungry today.

Any getting nervous for you shredded Wink

Hope the school visit went well Linzer

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/01/2012 18:38

Evening all,

No running from me again today and I was supposed to, but have given myself a sick note. One of my eyelids has got all swollen and inflamed, it isn't bothering me that much but is itchy and when I ran on Weds the sweat made it all sore. Also I can't wear my contact lenses which makes me grumpy too. I'm on antibiotics now so it should be better soon though, will plan to get out on Monday. In the meantime I have been happily pinning all my favourite nail polishes onto Pinterest for amusement.

Well done yesterday Jelli - how does 6W6P compare to the Shred?

Shredded - good luck this weekend, hope the weather is kind to you.

It's me. Long lost Nell. I've returned to the fold full of vim and vigour - going to catch up on all your news when I get home and see what colours you have on your nails if you've all been running and putting me to shame. Blush

To be fair, I did think of going out earlier but it was a bit drizzly and I'd just washed my hair , and my iPod was flat.

Oh I've missed you lot! Can I still play?!Grin

NellVarnish · 20/01/2012 18:59

Ps. I'm wearing China Glaze Starboard, the green one. Tis luffly.

NellVarnish · 20/01/2012 19:13

Just has a quick scan though - in summary:

Lots of running, races (go shredded!), donations (go MrShredded's boss) and restarting. Trainer talk, gaitspeak, missing iPods, rain, school stuff, Christmas dinners, and talk of Nell getting her priorities straight Grin but very little nail varnish talk.

Good job I'm back then.

Grin
NellVarnish · 20/01/2012 19:18

See I'm making up for my absence now. Hope your eyelid's a bit better WhoKnows. at least you've been able to pin away to amuse yourself - I added some luffly colours to my Nail Garnish board the other day. China Glaze's new Electropop range - tres de gorgeoise, you will love them too Linzer! would link my Pinterest page but am on phone and haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Wait I'll try ...

No I can't.

Blush
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/01/2012 19:21

I've been trying to talk about nail varnish, but everyone else just keeps going on about running. Shall I show you what I bought yesterday?

This and This

OP posts:
NellVarnish · 20/01/2012 19:38

Back home.

Ooooh I love that purple! But six coats? Yikes! the pinky one is luffly too WhoKnows. I might have to get that purple though when I'm out tomorrow ...

Here's my Nail Garnish board, complete with new China Glaze range - some of the colours are soooo lovely. Are you WhoCanTell btw? I've just seen that pink one flash before my very eyes. Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/01/2012 19:47

That's me, yes. I have that one on, only two coats, it is a bit see through, looks pale lilac on with a hint of red. I was thinking about putting it over a nude next time.

Your nail garnish board is a pleasure to behold!

OP posts:
jellibelli · 20/01/2012 19:58

I am just on my way - honest!!! I had to answer the phone and it was a chatty DH, so I am going honest! Really.

Nell good to see you and the nail garnish Grin they look fab but I mostly wonder "How?" Shock

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 21/01/2012 02:26

Hello Nell, I loooove your nail varnish board. I'm visiting in Feb, so let me have any orders!

Jelli, hope you went. Nice that DH calls you, I'm lucky to get a text when mine's away (as he was last night).

WhoKnows, I like that purple.

I did a yoga DVD this morning, not as violent as Jillian's Power Yoga and quite a nice start to the day.

Horrendous weather forecast - 2-4 inches of snow overnight and they will decide by 6 am whether to go ahead.

"Currently, light snow is predicted for Saturday morning, beginning at about 3:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the running of the Manhattan Half-Marathon, with temperatures between 29F and 33F. As of now, no change in the status of the race is expected. NYRR is monitoring the conditions and will post any updates promptly. Entrants should dress for the conditions; water-resistant hats, gloves/mittens, and socks are recommended."

Despite what I said above about DH not phoning, DH rang this afternoon to say he was going shopping for warm and waterproof gear for us both. So now I have a teal running jacket (it was that or black), a cute fleece hat with a hole in the back for my pony tail and some new fleecy gloves.

jellibelli · 21/01/2012 10:19

Well done Mr Shredded we approve of that shopping! Sounds like you are going to go ahead. How exciting (for all of us running by proxy..) slightly scary for You though I imagine...

I did do my DVD last night an am contemplating what to do now when I get up. I should run really but I can't face the cold out there [wimp emoticon]. So maybe some Jillian cardio....

who knows 6W6P is my favourite of my collection of Jillian DVDs although I don't have the two new ones yet so I have done it a lot! I tend to do level one as there is a fair bit of lieing on the floor It focusses more on building muscle and I think it works well with the running when I actually go which provides a good cardio workout.

I am starting to focus on how to lose some of my flab and reduce my body fat. It is quite difficult to gather information about it though - does anyone here understand it? It seems to be about growing muscles and then they increase metabolism as obviously they need energy to perform. I have never really been about a random number on a scale but achieving a 26 inch waist seems like a great thing to do - if - little unattainable as yet...

Right I'm off as I am starting to burble again.

Shredded I hope you have great day with your cute hat Envy , come back and tell us how much you enjoyed it !!! Good luck!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 21/01/2012 12:12

"Here is the official update- In the interest of safety, the Manhattan Half-Marathon on January 21 will be an unscored event. All registered entrants who are members of NYRR will receive 9+1 qualifying credit toward their guaranteed entry requirements for the ING New York City Marathon 2013. You do not have to run the race to receive this credit. Runners should use caution in traveling to and from the event, and at all times before, during, and after your run, including dressing for the conditions. NYRR thanks you for your support of our events!"

We're still going! As someone said on the NYRR FB page "we're runners and we're New Yorkers!"

I'll report back later, when we have de-frosted Grin

KristinaM · 21/01/2012 12:41

Hi everyone

Hope it went well shredded, im insprired by your madness dedication

Coldish, wet and windy here this week and im a bit wheezy so have only run twice this week. Did park run today though. Gave myself permission to go slowly though, as chest not up to it. Also have 14 kids at house for birthday party and sleepover later so am anticipating a LOOONNGG day

LinzerTorte · 21/01/2012 13:25

I'm happy to talk nail polish rather than running, WhoKnows (as I haven't actually got any further than programming W1R1 into my phone). Grin I'm currently sporting You Don't Know Jacques, which I wasn't sure about at first - thought it was a bit muddy looking - but it's growing on me. In other exciting news, I discovered this morning that the local chemist's (well, more of a Boots-type place than an actual chemist's) stocks OPI. At ?14 a bottle, so I don't think I'll be splashing out much, but I was still Grin to see it.

Fab pictures Nell; I would kill to have nails like that. But I don't think it's ever going to happen. (Me killing anyone or having such fabulous nails.) And you're right; I love the Electropop colours. Truly gorgeous.

Hope the run went well, Shredded. I shall think of you battling through the snow next time I'm put off by heavy drizzle.

I'm thinking about getting a yoga DVD; my friend said she would teach me some of the basics, but I don't think a DVD would hurt. Does anyone have any recommendations?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 21/01/2012 17:05

yoga DVD for Linzer

I'll report back on the run when I have the strength, but in the meantime, here's my yoga DVD Linzer.

jellibelli · 21/01/2012 18:34

I have been very stalkerish browsing some Manhattan webcams today and now you've come back and it sounds like you've been successful I feel like a complete wimp as I didn't run tday because it was a bit wet, cold and windy. But you must have had a pretty unpleasant run Shredded. I take off my running hat to you - well done you. Can't wait to hear all about it but understand you will be feeling a little flakey right now! Grin

Impressive! Hope you are doing something rewarding with no effort involved tonight!!

NellVarnish · 21/01/2012 19:13

Oh I'm going to view some webcams now too jelli and see if I can spot shredded in her new teal jacket and swishy ponytail!
Mr.S did a good job!

Hope it went fantastically well shredded despite the inclement weather - you're very intrepid but then you have ran with coyotes up your arse. Grin Thanks for the offer of nail polishes, tis most kind of you to offer - will get my thinking cap on even though I have just come back from town with four including WhoKnowsTeamPurple. Blush

Thanks for all your lovely comments about my nail garnish board, I just keep adding stuff, I am obsessed. And just a little unhinged.

Linzer if you need an electropop sending over let me know - not sure if they are out yet in my nail polish shop but will keep you posted. The OPI is about £10 here which is ridiculous. I can't link on this phone as you know buy have a look at Deborah Lippman Across The Universe on my board - it is beyond fabulous! And I do love You Don't Know Jaques, it's one of my favourites.

If anyone has any magic flab burning tips send them my way jelli!

And hope you're all sitting down because I've planned to start W1R1 on Monday with a friend! Although like you Kristina I've been really wheezy and tight chested so God only knows how I will manage it!

Happy running and WELL DONE SHREDDED AND MR. SHREDDED!!!
