Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

Jelli got me thinking, so I looked back at the old C25K thread. This time last year I was on W1. On 21 Jan last year I was doing W2R1. This year, all being well, I'll be doing 13.1 miles Shock!

LinzerTorte · 15/01/2012 06:23

That's fantastic, Shredded. This time last year I hadn't even started running... so I suppose I shouldn't feel too down about the fact that I'm only running 1k at the moment, as it's a huge improvement on last year.

Well done Kristina; you'll be breaking the 20 minute barrier before you know it. Grin

WhoKnows I have been thinking about restarting C25k, but I think the sudden increases in the second half of the programme may be a bit much for my knee, esp. the one from 8 to 20 minutes (would have to leave that run out). If I manage to do 1k today, I was planning on increasing it to 1.5k next week... and I do like the fact that I'm only out for about 15 minutes at the moment, although obviously that will increase as I increase the length of my runs.

I do have a goal, though: I've been persuaded decided to enter a 5k in June. So a long way away, but it means I'll have to work back up to 5k and (if nec.) sort out my knee by then. And it does feel good to have something to work towards. Grin

LinzerTorte · 15/01/2012 06:27

Have just been looking at the NHS C25k plan and even if I left out W5R3 (with the 20 minute run), it still jumps from 10 minutes running to 25 minutes running at the end of Week 6. I suppose I could join you for the first five weeks, but that only takes me up to 8 minutes running - which is about what I'm doing atm.

jellibelli · 15/01/2012 11:19

Linzer I know it is not high tech but my Bupa plan doesn't have that big leap which is why I chose it in the first place - it might be worth a thought.

DH is luring me into running a half marathon by tempting me with a trip to Europe somewhere to do the run. I am contemplating it. Shredded how have you really found the training?

This time last year I hadn't started running or shredding and was a confirmed execisephobe!

KristinaM · 15/01/2012 14:14

Thanks shredded and linzer -it helps when your time is totally rubbish to start with Blush.im so inspired by you all, i only started properly in august and did most weeks twice, so its taken me ages to get here. More c25k in 4 months nit 8 weeks.

I woudl like to increase my speend, rather than my distance, due to wear and tear on the back /hips. Dont think half marathons are for me

Jelli-have you chosen your holiday race location?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 15/01/2012 14:38

Jelli, I started out following a Runners' World training plan, which I think was recommended on the other running thread (the one where they are all doing marathons/half marathons). I have it in PDF format, so if you want to PM me your email addy I can send it to you to look at?

But I should say that I only followed the first few weeks of the plan, which involved 4 runs a week and some fairly (for me) brutal mileages. I was finding it hard fitting everything in and my knees were hurting. And it was Christmas/New Year etc. I can't blame the weather this year as it hasn't been that cold.

Separately I read that a half marathon was a 10 mile run with a 5k added on the end, and that if you could run 9 or 10 miles, the adrenaline on the day would get you through the rest. So I worked up to 10 miles (with my trusty Garmin Grin), which I've done 3 or 4 times now. I also did a 10K "race" last week (it was in the plan, which was why I signed up for it). I say "race" because I wasn't racing against anyone but myself.

The half marathon is 2 and a bit laps of the park, and there are a couple of really horrible hills. So yesterday, which will have been my last long run before the half, after I ran the first (worst) hill I cut back across and ran it again, so that I could tell myself next week that I'd run it twice in the same run and it wasn't going to scare me (IYSWIM). I also did a second lap of the bottom bit, as that's the bit I'll be doing three times. Because I run regularly in the Park I have plenty of landmarks, so I tell myself I only need to run to the next light/water fountain/hot dog stand/oddly shaped tree before I can slow down.

A friend of mine - who is very fit, also bikes and swims - recently did a half while recovering from an injury so ran 3 mins/walked 1 min throughout. I noticed people walking bits of the 10K last week so have decided that there is no shame in walking a bit if I need to. Yesterday, because I hadn't been out all week and didn't want to wreck my knees, at the end of each mile I walked for .10 of a mile. I ended up doing 10.8 miles in that fashion. I'd already walked 3 miles yesterday morning, so I now know my legs can do the distance.

The thing that will get me round on the day is that I'm doing it to raise money for charity and I don't want to let people down. DH is also doing the run, but will be faster than I am so has promised to be waiting at the finish for me, which if last week is anything to go by will be a nice boost at the end (assuming his legs are still working - he is aiming for less than 2 hours).

Sorry, that turned out to be a bit of an epic!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 15/01/2012 14:43

From Jelli's BUPA Plan "The walk/run routines you have used in the latter stages of training are an excellent way of getting out for regular exercise. They will really eat up the miles of any running event you may fancy trying out. It really is just a case of slowly building up the distance. Whole marathons have even been done in this way." I will remember that next week when I'm on my walking bits!

lizardqueenie · 15/01/2012 21:28

HelloSmile
Have lurked a little bit & wondered if I might join you ladies?
I've just joined the gym this week (eek) but am actually v much looking forward to having some time to myself in the evening. I was wondering if you ladies could recommend any particular podcocast/ download to go on my iPhone that I can use for c25k? I'm a real newbie to this & have several stone to loose so something that doesn't have huge leaps a few weeks in would be good. Also is it possible to use them whilst listening to your own music? I'm going to be using the treadmill at the gym initially & hopefully when I'm a bit fitter (and less wobbly & it's a bit lighter) I can run in the evenings outside.

Thank you

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/01/2012 22:36

Of course LizardQueenie - you are more than welcome. I'm not sure how many people are still following this thread at the moment, but we are all at various stages in our running careers, what we have in common is that we all started from total non-runners in the last year. As you have probably seen in the last few days some of us are thinking about repeating the C25K or something similar for a variety of reasons, I see no reason why we can't all chat even if we do end up doing slightly different things, in fact it would make it more interesting.

I'm with you on the weight loss, I have lost half a stone or so recently but got a couple more to go. I have so far used the NHS choices C25K podcasts (did this before i had an iphone) but now use an app called Runkeeper, which does allow you to use your own music, but you have to programme the runs in yourself. The C25K, as we had been discussing, does have a pretty big leap at Week 5, although you would be really surprised how much progress you can make in 5 weeks.

Hello to lizardqueenie Smile and waves to WhoKnows.

I have spent the afternoon getting ready for next weekend.

My legs are waxed.

I have meep meep meep on my toes...

...and get me to the taj on time on my fingers.

DH on the other hand was a girly swot and went out for a RUN! In -3 (today's daytime high)! Madness!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/01/2012 09:23

Ooh, those are both very nice colours. I have bare toes and Black Pearl fingers

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 16/01/2012 10:10

No run today. We're all ill (apart from DS, who just didn't want to go to kindergarten and tbh I didn't feel up to taking him). I haven't been out for four days now (snow at weekend didn't help) so am still stuck at 1 km.

KristinaM · 16/01/2012 11:24

Anothre girly swot here, as justvbeen out for a run. Not so cold here though, im guessimg just below freezing, bright and sunny.im trying to do intervals of running a litle faster, not very succesfuly

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 16/01/2012 12:01

Oooh, I like the polish WhoKnows. I don't normally wear any on my fingers so I'm building up to something a bit brighter.

Linzer, hope you all feel better soon. A rest will do you good Smile.

Well done Kristina - sounds nice running weather where you are. It's apparently -9 here this morning (according to the weather widget on my laptop). As I have to be at work for 7.30 (better get a move on) I will be running this evening instead. Just a short one.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/01/2012 12:26

Just been out here too, a beautiful cold crispy day, probably about 3 or 4 degrees but very little wind. My distance wasn't quite as good as I had hoped but close (I started well - the first 15 mins I passed all my target waymarks and ended well but slacked off for a bit too long in 15-25 min period I think. Only short of PB by 40m though, so not bad.

Shredded - I had 20 years in jobs where I couldn't wear nail varnish, now I can I am making up for lost time!

Linzer - hope you all feel better soon

Kristina - well done for sub-zero running.

jellibelli · 17/01/2012 07:59

Thanks for your info about the half Shredded. I am beginning to seriously think of doing it. I would be looking at May, just with what is coming up for us in the next few months, which gives me enough time.

Unfortunately I just have no motivation at all at the moment. It's too dark and cold and I keep putting it off till tomorrow. Help! I am not even doing very much shredding as my house is chilly too.

I think I may have to have a remeasure of my body. I suspect I am not as small as I was a couple of months ago. That may scare me into doing more!!!

Whinging over!

Hello queenie and welcome.

No nail news for me as I am naked fingers and toes. I feel Blush to admit it though! Any one seen nell ?

Happy running everyone

LinzerTorte · 17/01/2012 08:19

The Bupa programme looks good, Jelli - and definitely looks kinder to my knee than the NHS plan. The bit about exercising regularly for 30 minutes at a time is a good point, as I'm only exercising for 10-15 minutes atm. Is there any kind of app I could use to programme in the times? I've got the Nike app but you can't really programme in anything more complicated than one run over a certain distance/time, so it would require a lot of fiddling about, especially in the early weeks. Would the Runkeeper app be any good for that kind of thing, WhoKnows?

I had a PM from Nell yesterday; she said she would try to pop onto the thread to say hello but doesn't have as much time for MNing now she's back at work. Shock She needs to sort her priorities out, I think. Wink

I'm feeling much better this morning, but have a new excuse for not going out: it's snowing heavily. Although I bet Shredded has run in the snow. And I did see a runner battling through it when I was clearing the pavement in front of our house earlier.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/01/2012 09:03

Linzer - yes, that would be possible on Runkeeper, I programmed in the whole C25K to it. I just put in intervals of what it calls "slow" and "steady" for walking and running and the little voice tells you when to change over. It's not the most intuitive thing though, took me quite a while to get the hang of programming it, so don't try and do it 5 mins before you want to set off for your run.

OP posts:
NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 17/01/2012 11:52

Grin Linzer. No snow here thank goodness. I was just popping on to complain that it's raining Grin and I can't find my ipod, so I'm going to have a wet and quiet half an hour outing!

jellibelli · 17/01/2012 21:37

Oooh losing your ipod is a pain, i did that once but have kept close tabs on it since just so it doesn't happen again. Hearing my breathing puts me off Grin

I have made a hotel booking for the half marathon Shock. I scared DH when i told him as i think his offer of the trip was a bit tongue in cheek. The hotel is cancellable though, but it is a good location (at a good price) and has a spa for treatments for weary runners. Now, we just need to decide whether to do it or not and then see if there are any spaces available still....

I sneaked in my post this morning instead of getting ready for work so i forgot to PM you Shredded so I'll do that in a second, if you would send me the PDF as you offered. And thanks for all that info, I am quite tempted by doing the half marathon as i think it is an impressive thing to have achieved BUT i don't know if i can face the training without DH to nag/encourage while it's still dark and cold. I was much happier running/shredding in spain - it was so easy to be motivated. I think i need to move! I don't know. I think i've lost my exercise mojo!

Well done on your running everyone who has been out which looks like everyone except me

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/01/2012 21:40

Jelli don't worry it will come back (the lost mojo) mine always does provided I keep posting on this thread!

Shredded- hope the Ipod turns up, I like a quiet run occasionally but did feel quite lost when I mislaid my armband the other week.

OP posts:
jellibelli · 17/01/2012 22:00

Whoknows I do hope you're right, I shall just have to keep posting on here then Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/01/2012 14:47

Checking in, I was a bit short of time and enthusiasm today so I went out and did W1R1 of C25K again, 8 x 1min intervals, a good bit faster than I normally manage in my longer runs. Just went up and down a nearby quiet, flat road. I am pooped!

OP posts:
jellibelli · 18/01/2012 19:13

Ahh, b*gger - MN has eaten my message

jellibelli · 18/01/2012 19:21

Yes, it seems to have sent my messge into the ether - I hate it when it does that - it was a long one too. Angry

Now I can't remember what I was burbling on about.....

I was thanking Shredded for sending me the bumpf about half marathons and Whoknows for inspiring me to read more threads and other internet successes and this morning (my day off work) I eventually, after playing with my new ipad for far tooooo long got out of bed and went for a run. It was hard work and only 2.1 miles (as I got up so late I had to curtail my run in time for a shower and other prep before going out for christmas lunch Hmm ). Tomorrow I shall try to Jillian before work to enjoy the raised metabolism all day Grin.

Because of my newly refound enthusiasm I am in danger of committing to tha half marathon Shock but not quite brave enough yet. Phewee! at least I don't think so. Perhaps I'll wait to be inspired by shredded - no pressure then shredded!!
