Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

when I ran down my road last week for about 30 seconds, it felt like I could taste blood at the back of my throat. I know it wasn't but thats how bad/hard it was.
As they say, no pain no gain so its obviously got to hurt to be worthwhile!

I'll be fine, I know I will.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/11/2011 22:00

Grrr, just lost a long post.

Nell - Rimmel Urban Purple

Kid - Happy Birthday and good luck

Mosschops - well done

Countess - it all depends on my mood, if I'm feeling low I CBA to either run properly or do housework, next day I may be buzzing and ready to take on the world.

Linzer - hope the insoles do the trick.

Have just realised I need to take the existing insoles out, trim the new ones to the right size and then put them in, which sounds like too much hard work after an evening of working hard plus a glass of mulled wine so I think I'll leave my run until Thursday. I shall definitely be wearing my purple hat (at long last) as it's below freezing and very frosty in the mornings here. Just hope it's not as slippery as it was this morning.

WhoKnows I am failing on both the housework and the running fronts. Not sure I've lost my mojo, though; it's lack of time more than anything and I'm very frustrated about how I'm not doing either.

kid Happy birthday for tomorrow and good luck!

Nell I'm ashamed to admit it's still No. 7 Oyster, now very badly chipped (but fortunately it's pale enough for me just about to be able to get away with it). Love the colour of China Glaze for Audrey - where did you buy it? I've decided I'd like some blue(ish) varnish. Having said that no one wears nail polish here, I noticed the receptionist at the doctor's last week had blue sparkly nails. Shock

Day 1 done and dusted. Minute 6 of running was the hardest but then I managed the last part. I chose to run around the park next to DS's school but it was dark and completely unlit which made me feel vulnerable. I didn't enjoy the place but the running ok, hard but ok. I think I should just use the treadmill at the gym, would that still work?

countessbabycham · 23/11/2011 17:54

Well done kid

I reckon you could do it on a treadmill (not sure - anyone else know?) but I know I'd miss the fresh air.Maybe a different time or place outdoors?

NellVarnish · 23/11/2011 19:20

Fab kid, well done you!

As far as I can recall, Pistey did it on a treadmill, and I went on the treadmill for a bit after my foot injury as was told softer surface would help. Then I went back outside again. The treadmill was ok, but I prefer being outside in the fresh air, more to distract you from the pain and breathlessness. Obviously big risk of hysterical passers-by, white van men, zombies and mad axe cyclists though. Grin

Where is Pistey by the way? And sybil and molly?

LinzerTorte · 23/11/2011 20:28

Well done kid!

Well, the insoles are now in my shoes. I don't have the time, but I really am going to go out tomorrow. The pavements were slippery again today, so fingers crossed I don't do myself an even worse injury than the one I may possibly have at the moment.

Pistey is probably busy drinking gin crocheting, Nell - you would know if you were on Facebook. Grin

NellVarnish · 23/11/2011 21:56

Bahahahahahaha Linzer! You got me there! There's not another blanket needed is there? :(

You be careful on the icy streets, insoles or no insoles.

JelliBelli · 23/11/2011 23:03

Ooh Linzer hope the rest has done your knee good and you notice a big improvement tomorrow.

Nell run yet? (I can just keep on with the nagging - it's no trouble...)

Shredded enjoy Thanksgiving (I hope you are skiing in the cold placeGrin) but don't eat too much!

No exercise for me today - I had an early start for a training day at work today and I got home late too. I am off to bed now though for a big sleep.

Keep running everyone

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:19

No Jelli, I am not a ski-er Grin. I might take my skates though

brighthair · 23/11/2011 23:40

Can I come in?! W1R2 for me today and I am struggling Sad
Not out of breath when doing it but calf pain like cramp that nearly made me cry today. I battled through it and completed the run, and stuck an extra min run on the end
I just don't see if the pain is so bad already - will it get better?! Trainers were fitted by running shop, am overweight but prev to starting this was gym x 3 a week, plus riding horse x 3 a week and mucking out so not inactive
Am thinking maybe it's a combo of my being heavy and my muscles/bones etc getting used to it

brighthair · 23/11/2011 23:41

P.s given everyone is talking about nails I have OPI cozu melted in the sun on my fingers and color so hot it berns on my toes BlushGrin

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:43

Hi brighthair and welcome!

Do you do plenty of stretching first? Even though I've been running a while now, if I don't stretch or have a decent walk first my calves still get sore.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:43

Oooh, just saw your second post, you'll fit right in here Grin

brighthair · 23/11/2011 23:47

Yep to stretching. Should also add that my run is more of a shuffle/trot - 6.5km on the treadmill BlushBlush

NellVarnish · 23/11/2011 23:50

Oh yes welcome brighthair, anyone who can tell us the name of their nail varnish on toes and fingers is more than welcome here! I'm off to bed in a mo but will google them tomorrow and see what they are like. You will get through it honest. It does become easier - make sure you do a brisk warm up walk and don't forget to stretch afterwards, it really makes a difference.

shredded have a lovely Thanksgiving - and love your nail colours! I especially love the names of OPI - No Spain No Gain - makes me chuckle. I should have one called No Run No Fun.

Jelli I'm going out on Friday morning not really. You're doing a sterling job of nagging me into it though. Grin

Night all, happy running!

NellVarnish · 23/11/2011 23:52

Hark at me giving running advice after so many months sitting here on my big fat arse painting my nails. Grin

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:53

Night Nell!

kid · 23/11/2011 23:53

I didn't do any stretching but did a 15minute walk to get to the park. The back of my thighs are feeling very tight now and my back felt a bit tense earlier.

I'be got gym class tomirrow, I hope I'm not too sore tomorrow.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:54

brighthair shuffle/trot/jog who cares as long as you are up and about

brighthair · 23/11/2011 23:54

I will keep staggering away on the treadmill Grin
Definitely have a look at the melted in the sun one - kind of a coral peachy gold shimmer, people always comment on it
Color so hot is just fire engine red Grin

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:55

Well done kid! The first few are always the worst. I hope you feel OK in the morning

brighthair · 23/11/2011 23:56

Will have a go at some calf raises too - may be that the 22 years of horse riding have er somewhat tightened them
Also not helped by horse being in a "can't do it, won't do it, make me then" mood after treading on my foot failed to warn me off riding

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/11/2011 23:57

nice choice brighthair!
