Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

Hanks for the tips, i did 30 lengths swimming today and working 12 hours tomrrow but am gonna do it when i get home because i usually feel the need to clear my head after work.
So i need to head back after 15 mins yes? Does it have music for you to run and walk to?

I am very excited at the prospect of becoming a proper runner Grin

KristinaM · 21/11/2011 21:51

Hi mosschops and kid
Waves to everyone else
Ran befroe work today as its still very mild weather here.

kid · 21/11/2011 21:58

I've listened to some of week 1 and I am fairly sure I can run for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds. Thats probably my limit actually but its a good start.
Am I right in thinking I do that for 3 times a week? I think thats what it said on the podcast but I was only half listening.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/11/2011 22:03

Yes, that's the idea, you are meant to leave a day at least between runs to recover.

I went out this morning but didn't do very well, I seem to have lost my running mojo a bit at the moment Sad.

kid · 21/11/2011 22:12

I go to the gym at least twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. I'll have to play about with the days to see how it goes. I don't want to drop any days at the gym, not yet anyway.
I think I'll start with Weds, Fri and Sun. Lets see if it happens though!

countessbabycham · 21/11/2011 22:57

Hello all and a big hello to Mosschops and kid

WhoKnows I'll have a look around for your running mojo next time I'm out,but I reckon it'll turn up again soon.

Have to report a broken nail and badly chipped french manicure from swimming.
Obviously I realise I'm letting the side down....

Shredded I am in awe at such a long run.

I have tried out my new running shoes today and I am suitably impressed.Just did 25 mins today, but I worked out that the route I do today is harder than the other route I do - quite a few sustained but shallow uphills throughout - whereas the other route is easier with the uphill on the way out.

It's all about learning and improving though,so I'll take the harder days on board and use them as a positive.Smile

kid · 21/11/2011 23:22

my running route is going to be round and round the closest park!

NellVarnish · 22/11/2011 08:45

You are all doing so well Envy. I ran this morning to my neighbour's house across the road because it was raining. Does that count? Am I back in the game? Sorry for my absence, RL getting in the way.

And well done on the mega run shredded! I've given up on the dangerous parcel I sent you and I'm working on something else more suitable ...

Welcome to Mosschops and kid too - you CAN do it!

NellVarnish · 22/11/2011 08:49

Oh shredded forgvot to ask you. What is that chippy thingy that you clip on your running shoe and what exactly does it do? Thinking of getting DS one for Christmas as he is doing better than me now.

But I'm not bitter. Or jealous. Oh no.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/11/2011 09:02

Countess - thank you, yes it usually re-appears sooner or later. It tends to take my housework mojo with it, they are good friends. Glad the shoes are good.

Nell - well, anything's better than nothing how far is your friend's house exactly?

OP posts:
KristinaM · 22/11/2011 11:09

Really, who knows? I ifind the more i run the less i feel like doing housework

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 22/11/2011 12:56

Nell it was this little jobby. You need an i-pod to go with it. It's glorified pedometer, so it tells you how far you have been, but if you are as short as I am it over-measures if you don't calibrate it to your stride. You can set it to talk to you at intervals of time or distance (a bit like the C25K, where they tell you how well you are doing Grin). As I didn't have the nike trainers that have a special space for the chip in the heel, I just bought one of these for my trainer.

No sign of the parcel at this end either, sorry that you went to so much trouble and it has not turned up Sad.

It was far too misty and drizzly to go out this morning, so I went back to bed. Hoping it will clear up by this evening so I can go out.

Housework, who mentioned that?

JelliBelli · 22/11/2011 20:04

Well done Nell! So give us a date - when is RL going to budge over and let you have 30 mins a day ?

Kid hope all goes well tomorrow, I am sure you will be fine though.

Mosschops how are you getting on?

I never feel like doing housework - I only end up doing it because someone might come round and see my pigsty and I can't even blame DH and DCs Blush. Chuck me off here if you see me later tonight....

I did my 3 mile lit run tonight on the way home. Time was just about where it was last week (a bit slow). I may have to take a long hard look at myself and make a big effort to speed up a bit but can I be bothered?

NellVarnish · 22/11/2011 20:38

WhoKnows it was from about that roundabout thingy in front of Buckingham Palace to the gates. So quite far. Grin And by that I don't mean she is the Queen, just that it's that sort of distance. Because that would mean I lived on that roundabout thing. And I don't. Is it even a roundabout? Or is it a fountain thing? To be honest, London is a bit sketchy to me. [hick from the sticks emoticon]

I'm being a bit blonde here shredded but do you clip/thread that wee Amazon jobby with the chip inside it, onto your laces? I might get him it if I can find his bloomin iPod which he lost about four months ago ...

They have confiscated it! It's my own fault for not lying about the dangerous goods on the parcel ... but something else of dubious quality will come, not sure what exactly yet. Wink

Jelli what are you trying to say exactly? Are you doubting my ability to run now? Surely not! Wink

and runs off. Well not runs exactly obviously.

mosschops30 · 22/11/2011 21:09

Hi all, well i did it for the first time tonight, i found it hard-ish, but i took the dog and he slowed me down at times.
When she said at the end 'well done youve run for 8 minutes' i felt a bit deflated but i have to start somewhere and in all honesty i dont think i could have done anymore.
I cant wait to be a proper runner Smile
thanks for the support this thread is great

Have you done it yet kid?

NellVarnish · 22/11/2011 21:15

Yipppeee mosschops well done! 8 minutes is 8 minutes and before you know it, you'll be running all those eight minutes together, then twenty and you won't believe it when you get to the end and finish! You can do it, that's the beauty of C25K, it's so gradual that it keeps you at it and there's no really great big jumps apart from W5R3 but we won't go there yet. Grin

countessbabycham · 22/11/2011 21:16

Well done mosschops

Have a good run tomorrow kid

Bloody well done on your run Nell

Hello everyone else and KEEP ON RUNNING!!!!

kid · 22/11/2011 21:20

I'm starting tomorrow as I did a tough gym class last night and didn't want to start running with achy legs. I must be mad to start tomorrow as its my birthday and I should be resting having a relaxing day. Nevermind, I'm picking DS up from school and will use the big park to run around in. I'll go in my gym kit and trainers and do the brisk walk on the way there so I can get started with the running.
I need proper earphones but I'll just use the ones that came with my phone for now.

I'm not looking forward to it but I do want to give it a go.

Well done on your good start mosschops, 8 minutes is still very good, even broken down into smaller chunks. I hope I can do as well tomorrow.
DS (9yo) is going to be running with me, he is super fit though so will have to slow down to let me keep up.

LinzerTorte · 22/11/2011 21:21

My gel insoles have finally arrived, so I really want to get out tomorrow or Thursday to test my knee. Still ridiculously busy with work so don't really have time, but I must.

Nell I have one of those Nike chips too, and have this pouch - you put the sensor into your pouch and then fold it over your laces (as you can see in the second pic) - it attaches with velcro. It wasn't very accurate to start with and told me I was running at something like 12 km/hour, but it seems to be OK now that I've synchronised it a few times (worked out the actual distance I ran and "corrected" the Nike app).

mosschops30 · 22/11/2011 21:37

Good luck tomorrow kid Smile

countessbabycham · 22/11/2011 21:41

Happy Birthday for tomorrow kid

kid · 22/11/2011 21:42

thanks
I'm dreading it already but I know I have to do it as I've announced here and to some people in RL that I am doing it!

I'll be doing it around 4:30, I don't even mind if it rains, less people to watch me!
The park is a 20 minute walk away. I figured the brisk walk there will be the warm up and then run the 60 seconds and walk 90 seconds and then I can take a slow walk home. I haven't listened the to the of week 1 so not sure if there is a cool down bit as well as the warm up.

countessbabycham · 22/11/2011 21:44

Don't dread it kid.

It'll give you a lovely feeling when you've done it!

kid · 22/11/2011 21:44

thanks Smile

I really like reading here how others are getting on, it is certainly giving me the confidence to give it a try.
I will report back tomorrow night. I'm off out for a birthday meal so it might be later in the evening. That doesn't mean I had to crawl home from the park (I hope not anyway!)

NellVarnish · 22/11/2011 21:44

Grin thanks countess! Wore me out it did.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow kid! You'll be fine, hope the sun shines for you!

Linzer your poor knee. Let's hope the gel insoles work and your knee is no worse. Thanks for the info, I might get him one but will definitely need to find the flipping iPod first. What colour are your nails today? Mine are China Glaze For Audrey again. I love that colour.
