Where can I buy a ballet costume for my 4yo?

She has started ballet. She is the only one not in a costume!

I need leotard, tights, ballet shoes, and I am guessing a tutu? is this part of the leotard? although some girls have them with their leotards and some don't, not sure if it is needed or not.

I was told Sainsburys sell some? anywhere else?

At my DD's ballet school, it had to be a particular colour and style, although no tutu required. It sounds like yours has no dress code though. John Lewis are very good.

I use dance direct too, but check with the teacher exactly what she needs-some dance schools are stricter than others :)

I've seen some in H and M. Does the dance school sell any second hand ones? Or you could try ebay.

But agree with checking whether there is a colour code.

I know this sounds silly but what exactly do I need to buy? there is so much to choose from, I don't want to buy the wrong thing and have her look silly. I know what i like but not sure if it would look too fancy dress. I want her to fit in.

I have never done anything like this myself and her best friend from school goes and has done for years, so I want her to look right. Not better or fancy or anything, just not like her mother knows nothing about ballet!

colour is soft pink, that is clear, ALL the girls wore pink, but sort of guessed it is standard. I don't think they are too strict at this age, it is a small class of little ones, but they all look professional!

Have you asked the teacher? Our teacher sells the kit, but I've found it's cheaper on ebay (I've bought both new and used ballet stuff from ebay.)

Most dance school have a uniform dependig on which dance organisation they are affiliated with.

RAD is pink or lilac leotard and voile crossover skirt

etc etc

Most children wiat and go to the first class then the teacher tells them what to buy.

ISTD for little ones is I think Melody Bear all in one leotard/skirt in a selection of colours (each school chooses a colour)

BBO is all in pink leotard and attached skirt in a particular style

Tutus are virtually never worn to class.

No i didn't ask Blush i thought I knew what to buy, and then, went to buy it and realised that i didn't have a clue!

She is going tomorrow and I had wanted to get her some, as we decided that if after last week she enjoyed it (3 weeks) we would buy her outfit for her. She enjoyed it (although a professional dancer she is clearly not ever going to be Wink has zero coordination/concentration!) so we decided to buy it and I have been stuck.

I guess she will have to go one more day tomorrow with her leggings/tee-shirt and a promise to get it for the following week and we will ask exactly what to buy so it is right.

lockets that sounds right, but some have the voile skirt, and some don't. It was voile that I was thinking, not the full on tutu! I did not know the name! All have the tights, shoes and hair up.

You never know Pavlov. I said something similar to dd's first ballet teacher when she was 5. Two years later she was dancing with a touring Russian opera company in a professional production!

If it is RAd the pre primary uniform is changing and many schools have a mixture. The voile skirt used to be circular with dots on, now it has changed to crossover. However the skirts and leotards are a different style to ISTD and IDTA so it is best to check.

If you go to a local dance shop and tell them which dance school it is they will probably know thught they will be a bit more expensive than places like Dance Direct.

Pavlov - I have a pale pink voile skirt that I could send you. We have 2 and also they have changed the uniform. Had to buy new wraparound skirt just for dd1 to do an exam so now dd2 has that one. Might have a spare leotard. Got loads of ballet shoes. If you would like any let me know.

At dd's ballet school they take the stance that if you have the proper uniform then you don't have to go out and buy special stuff when they come to take their exams.

Some schools have one uniform for class then a comepltely separate uniform with brand new shoes for exams. Stuff that for a bowl of cherries!

I just said to DH 'this dance school DD goes to, it is not a serious one is it, it is just a local ballet dance school isn't it' and he laughed at me and said 'er, no, i would say, it is a serious dance school...'

no just DD learning stuff eh!

I will talk to the mother of her friend, and see what she says. Her DD is excellent at it, been going there since she was just 3 so she will know what I need to get, just won't be tomorrow, unless there is a dance outfitters somewhere in this godforsaken city.

so, for tomorrow, while I continue panicking, do you think I would be ok if I could locate her a correct coloured leotard, tights and ballet shoes? even if the style is not exactly right. I really don't want her to go in there with normal clothes on, I think she will get on so much better and fit in properly if she has the right colour at least!

Dd1 has just started grade 1. I nearly had a fit at the cost of buying various skirts and shoes. Some of them take it so seriously. Dd1 just likes dressing up!

schilke that is exactly like DD! She did fun ballet at her nursery each week, had a ballet teacher come in to the nursery, they had little cute tutus and leotards in class and I sort of thought in some odd way this would be a continuation of the same, have no idea why i thought that!

Is there a uniform guide at the ballet class?

The first time I ordered I rang dance gear direct and they helped me with sizing and everything, lady was fab.

Ballet shoe sizes are different - be warned!
