Any tips for my first Spin Class?

Just booked my first spin class so if anyone has any tips they would be gratefully received! Do I need padded shorts for my arse?

ensure you plan tomorrow to not need to achieve anything that involves walking..

DrNortherner · 19/01/2011 17:19

No padded shorts needed. Take loads of water and a hand towel as your hands will sweat loads, then you can wipe the bars as you go along.

Enjoy! It's a fab way to burn calories and shrink your arse.

mozette · 19/01/2011 19:16

thank you ladies, class is next tuesday night so lots of time to dread it

Don't try to keep up with everyone elseGrin.

Popbiscuit · 19/01/2011 19:19

Take a towel (or two if you are super sweaty like me!), lots of water and ask someone to help you adjust the seat, pedals and handlebars (it's easy but can be sort intimidating at your first class).

Dr. Northerner is right; you will shrink!

onanightlikethis · 19/01/2011 19:20

its addictive!

GoJoGo · 20/01/2011 13:09

It very addictive have been doing spin classed now for 2 years, i also do x-spinning these are really good as well

AnyoneForPimms · 21/01/2011 18:43

I been thinking for ages about trying a class so will watch with interest. Good luck and let us know how it goes Smile

ivykaty44 · 22/01/2011 12:05

Oh I am missing my spin Sad Its been 42 days now...

Anyway - make sure your seat is at the right position, don't be afraid to ask about this as it is important and sadly at times missed.

Towel and water as stated and possible some squash if you feel the need for a little extra

As for not walking - even from my first spin I have never had trouble not walking either then or later - make sure you stretch and then stretch and then stretch again. If there is a pool go and swim five lengths of breast stroke to really stretch out again.

Don't worry what anyone else is doing, don't worry if they go fast have the lever further forward.

thick socks for the pedals may dig into your trainers on standing - depending how much standing you may do.

Enjoy the music and listen to the music as that's what it is about

Have fun Grin

When the teacher tells you to turn the dial up a notch just pretend you are turning it up. I'm fairly fit but only spin a few times a year and there's no way I can keep up with the rest of the regulars.

Brilliant way to get your heart going though. I always come out with rosy cheeks.

upahill · 28/01/2011 19:16

Have you had good results from spinning folks?
I mean have you seen changes in your body or is it just your fitness that has improved.

ivykaty44 · 02/02/2011 14:48

You can easily burn 550 in 45 minutes and give yourself a good cardio workout to get fit - so both if you are eating sensibly and you do need to eat to go to spin Grin

maltesers · 05/02/2011 19:50

Very important. . .DONT eat anything for at least an hour. You will work hard and will feel totally sick if you turn up having just eaten. So tiny energy snack over anhour b4 u go.
I have been a fitness instructor and love aerobics and swimming but find Spinning a KILLER. . . .So go at your own pace, take it easy and enjoy !

JimmyChooChoo · 08/02/2011 15:33

Maltesers-can you really go at your own pace?My OH told me that you cannot stop during the whole class!
Meant to be going tomorrow(as I just mentioned on my other thread)and I'm finding it so daunting! If I was on a bike/treadmill in the gym and I felt like I was going to die get out of breath I would just stop for a while but the thought of everyone seeing me being a wussBlush

FluffyMummy123 · 08/02/2011 15:35

course you can
you can sit down and cycle rather than standing up and whooping

FluffyMummy123 · 08/02/2011 15:35

i went after considering it a lot
it was FINE
h ard work but not scary

JimmyChooChoo · 08/02/2011 15:37

Thanks iCod!Apparently spinning is the best class for weight loss.Have you found this?

juneybean · 08/02/2011 17:48

What IS spinning???

going · 08/02/2011 17:55

Wear light clothing. A women at a class I went to a couple of weeks ago was wearing a fleece and had to leave as she was too hot and had nothing on underneath.

I only started in December and go once a week. I really love it, much more so than my pilates class!

mozette · 08/02/2011 18:15

Forgot to come back! I've been twice and going again tonight. First one was HARD and my seat was too far back but the second class was better and my seat in the right position. Could even do some standing up bits the second time!

I just went at my own pace and gears however did try and speed up when the class did. Will try and work a bit harder this week and move up some gears

WickedWitchSouthWest · 08/02/2011 18:15

I used to be very fit but since having ds 7 months ago I've not got back into anything. I've considered spinning but I'm a bit scared of publicly humiliating myself Confused

I do like the 'pretend to turn the dial'! That would be my tactic!

NorthernComfort · 08/02/2011 18:29

ooh, I'm off to my third ever class tonight and I love it. It's odd as well because I was one of those last picked and generally humiliated at P.E. type girls but I'm loving it. Tend to come out looking like a heart attack is imminent though. Good luck!

crystalglasses · 08/02/2011 18:37

How fit do you have to be to start with? Until 6 months ago I was fairly fit; went to the gym 2 times a week plus a personal trainer once a week bit since then I've been a complete couch potato as I haven't been very well. I'm feeling much better now and want to start the gym again but do you think I should raise my fitness level first before starting a spinning class or can I dive straight in?

FluffyMummy123 · 08/02/2011 18:39

It's really exhilarating. Wear a best deffo. I don't get to Gomorrah enough to affect weight. One you only lose through dieting not excercise

FluffyMummy123 · 08/02/2011 18:39

Go! Do a beginners class. Tell instructor you are anxious. Most classes in semi darkness so no one even sees you.
