Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Still feeling ill, you'll all be running 10k by the time I start

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2011 17:28

Just done week 1 run 3 wooohoooooooooo!
It is fffrrreeezzziiinnng, but wore gloves this time and did feel better for it Grin

It was fine, we will have to see how Monday goes as I move onto Week 2 [gulp]

TechnoKitten · 08/01/2011 18:11

Ok then will give it a go. Will start next week once work back to normal after Christmas hols!

YorkshireCrockpot · 09/01/2011 13:58

Week1 done! Feeling good despite being lapped by 'proper' runners! Looking forward to week 2. Still hoovering up Christmas cake, jelly babies and celebrations so think I'm cancelling out all this good work....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2011 21:22

Blimee - am moving into week 2 tomorrow Confused
Will I survive? Time will tell.

MarniesMummy · 09/01/2011 22:19

Week 1 done on saturday (but I'm into DP being away so there's little time for posting).

Week2 commences on tuesday when Marnie starts preschool (awwww!).

I am BRICKING it!
How the devil am I going to run uphill for 90 seconds.

And as for you WheeshtWillYe Missykins, I have just one word... respect!!

GypsyMoth · 09/01/2011 22:22

i second that Marniesmummy!!

ds is loving it....wanted to do a bit more, but i told him noooo its not on the plan and will break the rules lol

WheeshtWillYe · 10/01/2011 01:13

Smile thanks ladies! Just finished week 2 & have actually enjoyed it. Getting a wee bit bored with my route but I'm trying to avoid hills - no way can I push that thing up hill & run at the same time!

midtowner · 10/01/2011 02:20

Can I be a late joiner please? I started to run a bit back in September, but have had a few weeks off. I went out today and couldn't get going. So I've downloaded the app, put some music on my i-pod and will start tomorrow!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/01/2011 11:39

I did my first run of week one today!! I feel so proud of myself. Annoyingly my new ipod (that dh got for me for christmas from China Hmm) kept skipping back to the beginning, but I managed to get to 22 mins till it did it finally, and then managed to cobble the rest together.

I did feel like i was going to die about 3/4 of the way through, but not to the point of vomiting or anything Grin

Was pleased with how my sports bra preformed, I got the shock absorber one so thanks to whoever recommended that, and my trainers felt nice and light on my feet!

The best bit was getting home and having a healthy glow for the first time in ages! I feel much more awake for doing it! HOpe I can dig out an old mp3 player so I can do the rest of the runs this week.

girtlush · 10/01/2011 16:37

Can I join?

I did week 1 day 1 today, i have never run anywhere before :O

Quite frankly I was pathetic. I did 6 runs and I couldn't manage the last 2 as I thought I was going to be sick :(

I can't see how I'm going to progress at all if today is anything to go by.

I have no kit as i don't want to spend loads on it yet and I just wore rubbish trainers and clothes that I had to adjust every 5 mins Angry I was also running in mud which was very slippery, and uphill so might have to rethink my route.

Do you think it's better to run on an empty stomach?

Sorry for the moaning and the longness :o

sybilfaulty · 10/01/2011 19:03

Welcome girt. I didn't buy any kit til i'd been doing it for 6 weeks apart from a bra. I found the first few weeks awful but then got back into it. I think it is tempting to run the 60s bits like a sprint, when you are really aiming for a gentle jog.

Well done to everyone who has been out. Great stuff. I did Week 4, Run 1 today as I am horribly out of practice and need to build it up again. Did OK and am looking forward to going out again on Wed or Thurs

BelligerentGhoul · 10/01/2011 19:14

I still haven't managed to get any trainers but I have done a couple of runs on Wii Fit. Yesterday I did fifteen minutes, all jogging and no walking and it was fine. Will do twenty minutes tomorrow.

I realise that it's not the same as you clever lot being outside doing it but what I have found helpful is that it's easy to maintain a steady pace. Last time I tried irl, I went too fast and nearly killed myself after a couple of minutes!

So - I can't properly count myself as 'one of you' yet but at least I'm trying to do something rather than the nothing I usually do! :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/01/2011 20:10

I second the steady pace!
Week 2. Run 1. Did it. Someone earlier on here said it should be comfortably uncomfortable. That's what I felt tonight Grin

MarionCole · 10/01/2011 20:10

Illness nearly gone so hopefully I will go out for W1R1 tomorrow.

girt - I get a terrible stitch if I run within 2 hours of eating, which is a right pita because it means I can't run until about 9pm.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/01/2011 20:42

girt, I think something light to eat before, as I ran on an empty stomach today and felt starving (sorry to contradict you,Marioncole!)There are reasonably priced running shoes in aldi at the moment, they might be worth a try and probably fairly decent. On clothes, I just wore some old yoga pant type trousers (very cheap ones from sports direct), an old cotton t shirt and a fleece jacket. I think the trainers really make a difference though, and make it much easier. Mine are new balance ones, and i have seen them very reasonable on ebay.

Also I third keeping the pace very gentle to start with. I did feel traumatised about 3/4 of the way through and wouldn't have continued had i been running any faster than a very slowww jog.

midtowner · 11/01/2011 02:01

dobby, thank you so much for starting this thread. I've been out tonight in a -1 temperature and after an eleven hour working day. The temptation was to stay indoors, but because I said I'd go out, even though it was to a bunch of strangers on the internet, I did. And once I got going I actually quite liked it Smile

PersonalClown · 11/01/2011 09:52

I DID IT
I got off my arse and went out. It absolutely killed me (yes, I am THAT unfit) but I did it and now I am having a well deserved cup of tea.

It does get easier, doesn't it???

girtlush · 11/01/2011 12:32

Thanks for the advise.

I'm hoping it gets easier too personalclown :) Good on you for doing it. I think the motivation bit is the hardest part.

My legs are killing me today, and I feel exhausted. Hoping I am less achy ready for run 2 tomorrow.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 11/01/2011 14:29

Well done PersonalClown! Im sure it MUST get easier. Im going again tomorrow so I'll let you know...
I am stiff today too Girtlush, I didn't stretch afterwards, which i think would have helped!

Did you make it out, Marioncole?

YorkshireCrockpot · 11/01/2011 14:47

Off out tomorrow for day1 week2.... Feeling a bit apprehensive about it especially as the buggy and dd2 have to come too. Week1 went well just hope this week goes ok

midtowner · 12/01/2011 00:56

Good luck geraldine and yorkshire. I hope to get out tomorrow, but we have 6-12 inches of snow forecast and I'm not that keen...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2011 07:55

Going out today in the daylight I do like going out in the dark because no one can see me and I feel invisible, but I won't be able to go later.

.I am on week 2 Run 2 and it's pouring with rain.Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2011 11:20

Week 2 Run 2 done but I had no energy today whatsoever. Made myself do it though. Maybe though I should stick to running in the dark!!

YorkshireCrockpot · 12/01/2011 11:29

Done it- phew! Had to force myself though but I didn't find it harder than last week running wise just harder to get my arse out if the door in the grey drizzle. Happy it was mild and not icy here. Running tomorrow too.

Piste - you're very brave running in the dark- my husband won't "let" me so I have the shame of half of Nottingham seeing me. Oh the shame!
