dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 20:38

Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

sybilfaulty · 27/02/2011 18:22

Furtherest? Furthest! Farthest? I don't know. A long way for me, anyway Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2011 19:29

It was a long way then Sybil??!!

ClenchedBottom · 27/02/2011 19:46

Ooooh well done sybil that's great stuff!
I love your cautious optimism!

I'm thinking now that the fear of starting W4 at the end of this week might even distract me from the horror of going back to work tomorrow........

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2011 19:47

It was a long way then Sybil??!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2011 19:48

Lol! I'm going mad!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/02/2011 19:51

Is that because you are worried people might say
"Omigod CB, you've got a corner in yer butt??!!"

ClenchedBottom · 27/02/2011 19:57

I hadn't thought of this before, but (butt, even) I'll have to check my work trousers for buttock corners in the morning!!!!!!

ClenchedBottom · 27/02/2011 20:25

Once I've put them on, I mean......

  • The trousers, not the buttocks! I may have a peculiar bum, but(t) it doesn't have detachable buttocks!
Corriewatcher · 27/02/2011 20:29

I'm a fraud! Thought I was doing really well getting to the last week and doing my first 30 min run. Took DH's pedometer for first time and discovered I had only run 3.8 km, far off the expected 5 km! So the only way I've been keeping up with the programme is by going slower than I should. The shame. I've been boasting to friends about my running too.

On the bright side, at least I can concentrate for the next few weeks on increasing my distance as didn't really want to up the times. 3x30 mins suits me just fine and think I would start to miss runs if I upped it to say 45 min per run.

ClenchedBottom · 27/02/2011 20:39

Corrie - was the pedometer properly calibrated for your stride? It could be that it was set up wrong of course Wink

Alternatively, as you say, just keep going with 3 x 30 mins, which is utterly fab anyway! (Seems a long way off for me at the moment!)

Corriewatcher · 27/02/2011 20:46

Thanks Clenched

It must be an improperly calibrated pedometer! Wink

YorkshireCrockpot · 27/02/2011 20:54

Huge well done to cubscout! Marvellous work!
Hello to all the newcomers too!

Did w5 d1 today and did it- most pleased as have had another week off due to a stinky cold and rain stopped play yesterday. Anyone else refuse to step outside if it's raining or is it just me?
Aiming to get out midweek however that first really big run
is just around the corner.... Eeeek!

GypsyMoth · 27/02/2011 21:29

I don't mind the rain too much, just the puddles and frogs!

Just done wk6 run2. Enjoyed it tonight

MarniesMummy · 27/02/2011 22:26

Rain doesn't bother me too much, I try to think of it being better as it's cooling [severly deluded young lady here!] and I'm always headed for my bath/shower combo once I'm back so it makes little difference.

Love your point about the time economy in running Sybil. I love the fact that if you go out on your own and get used to it then you can nip off for some exercise whenever it suits you, wherever you are which is pretty cool. No excuse for stopping now eh?Wink

I didn't plan to lose weight when I started, I just wanted to be fit enough to jog along when the group of mums I power walk with decide to jog for a bit of the route. (One of them is a fell runner and the others have been runners for ages.)

Happily I am losing weight (despite eating more) though I weighted myself on a friends scales last week and unless they're massively wrong I haven't lost that much weight, but I am definitely almost a dress size smaller. So certainly toning if not slimming much (just wish it would come off tops of thighs and bottom a little quicker!)

cubscout · 28/02/2011 07:27

Well done sybil and corrie! Sybil, you will be fien for your race. If you think of 0.4 miles as just an extra 5 or so minutes of running then you are well on track.

Corrie, on the positive side, you are running for 30 mins, and again if you increace distances slowly you will probably get faster as well.

Clenched - you really must post before and after pics of your corner. I keep inspecting mine to see if it's changed shape Grin. Like Marnie, I think I'm a bit slimmer - clothes definately looser.

Come on everyone else - we will have more graduates in the next week and then maybe we can all do bridge to 10 k... or just concentrate gently on building distances. I'm definately not going to stop now (barring broken leg).

MarniesMummy · 28/02/2011 11:40

W7r3, tick!

ClenchedBottom · 28/02/2011 17:01

Well done MarniesMummy - so it's W8 for you now then???

cubscout - I'm not sure that the camera has yet been invented that can take a lense with a sufficiently wide angle to capture the cornered delights of my bum. And I certainly don't have any 'before' pictures either!

Legs are a bit sore today, but am not sure if that could partly be from a family badminton session yesterday - constantly picking up the dropped shuttlecocks does something to the backs of my legs.....

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 28/02/2011 17:33

Can I join? Grin I started ages ago (a year or so ago) and didn't get past week 1 Blush - twisted my ankle a little, took a break and never went back. Since then I have had another DC , and then had some personal training where we do 1.5mile tests from time to time. Last time was 18.56 with a few walks BlushBlush I am very unfit though & fat. Trainer has now moved away, but testing the 1.5 mile one more time mid march. My aim is to do it non stop at least Confused
I jumped in at week 4 this time because I am abit fitter, still struggled but completed 3 now. Am now going to move onto W5R1, hopefully tonight if DH will come out with me (desn't get back 'til 9.30 ish, and has a session with British Military Fitness tonight - I can't go as he goes near his work in London). I have just freaked out at W5R3 being suddenly a 20 min non stop run! Shock - is that a really hard leap??

McDreamy · 28/02/2011 18:39

I'm all set to start tomorrow, I have downloaded a new running playlist, I have worked out a route, I have signed myself up to the local Race for Life in May and announced it on facebook - no going back now!

DD1 and DS at school and DD2 in nursery tomorrow morning - watch me cough and splutter fly around my little route!

AmpleBosom · 28/02/2011 19:13

Hello again, i've completed the week 1 run 2 but for the sake of a neat week i'm going to class tonight as week 1 run 1 if that makes sense Confused I started well last week doing the 1st run on wednesday so i went to zumba on thursday and ended up with cramp. Today was the first day i've not been in pain so i started again Blush

You all sound like you're doing really well and much more advanced than me!

Does anyone know how i can listen to the couch to 5k podcast but over my own music? I need something a bit more my taste to keep me going Grin

dawntigga · 28/02/2011 21:14

ClenchedBottom · 28/02/2011 21:17

Ooooh more new recruits,, fabulous!
Good luck for tomorrow dawntigga, hope it works out well for you, that's quite an investment.

AmpleBosom · 28/02/2011 22:10

Good luck Tigga!

sybilfaulty · 28/02/2011 22:50

Good luck Tigga! We are all walking / running / jogging with you.

I wore leggings today Clenched and noticed that my arse had a certain, erm, right angle to it in the lift mirror. Could we be becoming bum twins?> My bum is flat and was just a bit saggy but now has a certain angle to it at the side. I am shocked and concerned!

BonzoDooDah · 28/02/2011 22:55

I saw this thread this afternoon ... and bought a Shock Absorber Bra this evening! Thanks whoever recommended it. Was fab to wear for Zumba. Now to find the dratted MP3 player and get off my fat bum and get running.

Any tips for a beginner?
