Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Good luck Mt. I am also running later. I am on W7R3 which is the last 25min one. I think the next is 28 mins. Keep going everyone Grin

sybilfaulty · 18/02/2011 07:40

Good luck MT, we are all behind you. I am going to try for 28 m this morning. That's about one song more than last time. I think it will be a park run though so different distance. There will be a lovely cup of coffee at the end though.

Keep on running everyone.

midtowner · 18/02/2011 09:20

I did it!!! Grin Grin

Very muddy and in need of a shower!

midtowner · 18/02/2011 09:54

OMG! 4.1k including the warm up and cool down!

sybilfaulty · 18/02/2011 11:44

Well done Midtowner! Great stuff. 4.1k is fab fab fab.

I did mine this am but with a new route. I am going to drive it on the way home from nursery pick up in a min and will report back. I ran for 28 m and it was hard today, but now I feel virtuous.

Keep on running everyone Smile

sybilfaulty · 18/02/2011 12:50

Just checked and I did 3.7k this am. Hurray!

cubscout · 18/02/2011 17:34

Well done midtowner and sybil Grin
We are so nearly there!

MarniesMummy · 18/02/2011 19:20

Well done to all you runners! (Oh yes you are!)

You're doing so well, the distances and times you are running for are fantastic, I can't wait to join you.

I'm just about to do my shower then bath combination that I seem to have fallen into having just finished w6r1. Not much to say about it really except I can't wait to go out on sunday!

Have a great weekend ladies.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/02/2011 19:22

Failed big time [arse]

I have asthma that is very well controlled ( normally ) but am changing medication, and at the moment it feels like I'm not taking enough, but actually in theory I am taking something stronger. It's not good.

Not sure what is going on, but I really feel frustrated with this. I did try tonight although it has felt bad for the last two days, but there was no way, I think I managed 10 m before realising it was futile Sad

So walked home again. < sigh >

Ironically up till now, my breathing has not been an issue at all, if anything has felt slightly dodgy it has been my knees and that has been so much better since I started having two rest days in between.

Ah well, I will try again tomorrow.
[cheesed off emoticon]

MarniesMummy · 18/02/2011 20:33

Oh Piste! That's annoying.
Was it cold where you are tonight?

I only ask as cold air constricts the airways
if you're asthmatic which won't have helped your situation. In fact it may have been the cause.

On the positive side next time I'm sure you'll get it sorted, there's nothing for the determination like not completing what you'd intended.

Go easy on yourself tonight, you've not failed, you just need t5o rethink this particular puzzle!

sybilfaulty · 19/02/2011 01:16

Dear Piste

You are out there running abd doing so well. Some days will be better than others, but you are giving your all. I'm sorry that today was not what you hoped, but tomorrow may be better. We are all with you and egging you on to have another go. I've had days when even 2 mins is too much.

Hang on in there. You can do it.

GypsyMoth · 19/02/2011 01:30

Yes hang on!

Wk5r2......2x8min runs which were surprisingly good! Can feel myself becoming fitter, recovery is quicker

Need some better shoes now and nice running stuff!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/02/2011 07:03

Aw. Thanks guys!
(When I said 10 m it was actually 10 metres!!! )
But my lungs feel better today. It doesn't feel quite so much like someone has laid carpet in there!!

Will try again today. It was certainly exacerbated by the cold air last night. It was quite misty too. I was doomed!! But a new day today. Keep going all!!

cubscout · 19/02/2011 08:50

Aw Piste, don't be hard on yourself. Yesterday was a horrible foggy day, which would have definately had an effect.

Today not much better either...if it stops raining I'm going to try and get out too, so will be thinking of you, but we're off to Spain later today so not much time left.

Or maybe we should all give ourselves a half term break.

Well done evryone, ILT and Marnie, good luck this week now you are on longer runs.

MarniesMummy · 19/02/2011 08:57

By the way (I am asthmatic too) now that I'm obsessed with warming up to avoid injury, I do a warm up for my lungs, using my powerbreathe (many links early on in the thread).

It's a very expensive warm up for your lungs (they cost about £50 and look like they should cost £10 tops!) that said, they do warm up my lungs and make them 'cold air proof'.
It is also (slowly but surely assisting me in breathing better) I definitely breathe (even day to day when doing no exercise) abnormally, probably due to being asthmatic.

YorkshireCrockpot · 19/02/2011 16:42

Aw piste don't be hard on yourself, you cubscout, MT and others are my inspiration at the minute! You're all doing amazingly well.
Well my eye didn't fall out and I can now see- hurrah! However I just couldn't get my bum out if my bed today to go out and its rained all day. No motivation at all. Aiming for a run tomorrow morning. That's another week gap though so I'm feeling a but apprehensive. Let's see what I can do!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/02/2011 19:19

Cor, I'm knacky knacky knackered! Did the last 25 min run. It's 28 next time.

But I did it! Breathing not 100% but good enough although I feel much more tired than usual.

I'm sO glad to have done it though and am now in my jim jams in that happy post running place.

I ran past DH and DS in my last 30seconds and they said I actually looked quite good!!

cubscout · 19/02/2011 19:47

Hurray, well done Piste! Enjoy a well earned rest now.

I managed the first 28 min eventually this afternoon and at the end I actually felt I could have gone a bit further. And I'm finding that I'm itching to go out, and even looking forward to the runs (shock). Running shoes packed and hopefully they will get a little outing in Spain.

Catch up with you all later in the week.

justaminute · 20/02/2011 11:30

Still in awe at all you runners.

Did w3r1 yesterday. 3 minutes is a big jump from 90 seconds. I was willing myself to each lamp post thinking surely Laura will say that's it but no I had to lurch onwards to the next lamp post and so on. i made it but my legs felt very tired.

sybilfaulty · 20/02/2011 12:05

I am having a day off today as I am tired. I was at work yesterday and caused mucho hilarity among my colleagues when I said that I measured my distance by driving it! Why had I not got one of those Nike chips which you can attach to your shoe? Or possibly a watch to tell you how many cals burnt, ave speed etc? I tell you , it's a different world.

Keep on running everyone.

YorkshireCrockpot · 20/02/2011 12:44

A chip in your shoe? Thought an iPod was gadgety!

Well I only went nailed it this morning ladies! Week 4 you are no match for me! Hahaha!
Next trip out will be midweek so am biting the bullet and going for week 5. Not checked it out yet.....

Was overtaken by 2 proper runners this morning and had to jump over many muddy puddles like the woman in the actimel advert (shoe stayed on though!).

MarniesMummy · 20/02/2011 15:19

I've completed w6r2 and it feels good.
No more run-walks from now on, it's quite good, I'm looking forward to it.

Incidently, the 'I saw you out last night' line of conversation continues. It amuses me that I can tell where I was when someone saw me by what they say.

If they say 'I saw you out jogging last night', I know they've seen me somewhere on the Eiger.
If they say 'I saw you out running last night' it'll be anywhere other than the Eiger and 'I saw you out power walking last night' means anywhere from the warm down to my house!

I'm very happy that no-one says 'I saw you shuffling as if there might just be an outside chance you'd make it to the hospital before your crimson head exploded' or the like!

Good running to all those out tomorrow and the remainder of today.

LIZS · 20/02/2011 15:23

wow you all seem to be going great guns ! I have to confess I have lapsed :( Busy week, foul weather but hopefully will resume over half term.

midtowner · 20/02/2011 22:55

Well done everyone. Piste, great that you managed to get out second time around. I used to have asthma, but mine seems to be laying low atm.

I ran around Northwood Hills - the clue is in the Hills bit of the name - today. Friend who gave me today's route does a 5k run 3 or 4 times a week in his lunch hour - he can do it in 21 minutes - and runs 10k's for fun. I need some new friends Smile.

sybilfaulty · 21/02/2011 22:53

I am getting faster (although still slow. Was overtaken by a 20 something lad, though of course I am double his age.) Have worked out that by increasing my distance by 300m or so, I will be doing my 5k in about 5 runs! OMG! My legs ache so much when I am about 10m in that I really could give up on the spot.

How is everyone else today?
