dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 20:38

Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Cubscout - I've given up on the supposed anonymity of going out early or late as it seems that everyone I meet seems to drop 'I saw you out running' into the conversation at some point! Pah!

Gonna have one of these tonight Wine, yum!

LIZS · 04/02/2011 18:14

I have to confess I couldn't face it today :( Nasty weather, wet and windy

Corriewatcher · 04/02/2011 18:14

Just done W6r1 today which was fine (ie 5 min and 8 min runs) compared to the mammoth 20 min one earlier in the week at end of W5. I also didn't look quite as much of a beetroot as I did with the 20 min run. One thing that's spurring me on is I think I might have lost a little bit of weight :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/02/2011 18:28

Oooooooh, Corrie - you are a step ahead of cubscout and me. We are doing that tomoz.

cubscout · 04/02/2011 19:02

Ok Rather - now we're chasing 2 people, Corrie and Sybil Grin

sybilfaulty · 04/02/2011 20:27

I feel a gauntlet being laid down Smile.

I have in fact done about 40 mins non stop but not for a while. I will try 2x 10 tomorrow. I think we are all doing fabulously as it is so cold, so to be out at all is a huge achievement.

Keep on running everyone.

midtowner · 04/02/2011 23:28

I didn't make it out either. Got up at 6.30 because I had to phone a doctor in the UK, who wittered on until after 7am. As I had an 8.30 meeting at work there wasn't time.

Just in from team drinks, so have scuppered chances of going tonight as well. Dh has disappeared, so presumably out running properly.

It;s great to hear how ell everyone is doing!

midtowner · 04/02/2011 23:29

well, obviously

sybilfaulty · 05/02/2011 08:07

Have just done my 2 x 10min runs. Only week 6 run 3 to go (just a 25 m non stop) and Robert and I will part ways again.

I swim a lot so am fairly fit anyway, but running is so different. My legs ache as I go and it takes a while to feel up for it. I am hoping that this will get easier as I keep on going.

Well done everyone. Keep on running.

YorkshireCrockpot · 05/02/2011 09:15

Everyones doing so well can't wait to get out but can't face it this morning. Head feels like a brick.

cubscout · 05/02/2011 09:43

Oh dear. Just back from week 6 run 1 and it was hard going. After Thurs I thought I would be fine, but by 3rd run felt like I was dragging myself round.

Dh (trying to be supportive) suggests muscles may be tired from Thurs and to just keep plodding on.

Who else is out today? Rather - are you going for it?

LIZS · 05/02/2011 11:21

Just done W3r2 and got further than previous one. Can see myself repeating this week though.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/02/2011 12:05

Cubscout - I thought week 6 run 1 would seem a breeze after W5R3 but I can see what your DH says.

I am going when it's dark!!

GypsyMoth · 05/02/2011 12:21

its till really windy but will get out tonight.

Liz....think i may repeat this week,or at least add on one extra run before week 4,think thats sensible as the wind is sabotaging my runs!

midtowner · 05/02/2011 13:40

Just back from W4D2. Raining, but no ice to contend with thank goodness. And it occurred to me that if I ran east to west across Manhattan instead of north to south (as I have been doing) there would be fewer traffic lights because the east/west blocks are longer. So thanks to whoever suggested varying the route as I wouldn't have thought of that on my own!

What do any morning runners eat beforehand?

MarniesMummy · 05/02/2011 17:06

Ooops! Have just twigged that I've been a bit too keen. Today I did w4r2. Blush I'm not supposed to run until tomorrow.

To be honest though I didn't know that till just now my body did feel a little less willing. I walked for about 10metres of the first 5min walk but ran the rest.

Also, remember my spurt in fitness where I finished about 100m on from where I did the run before? Well, I realised that I started further along, so today I finished where I'd finished on the first runBlush.

That said, I did do it.
I'm going to make sure I don't run tomorrow.

MarniesMummy · 05/02/2011 17:10

Actually, I was right to run today but I did w4r3. Gosh! I'm so Confused.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/02/2011 19:06

Well. Mmmmmmm
Don't anyone underestimate Week 6 Run 1. It looks comparatively easy but it is still a major effort. Did it though, and have more things to add to my list. I think I got up to number 10

  1. I prefer to run when it is not windy

  2. That I must run in a lopsided manner because my right leg always feels more tired more quickly. I fear I may resemble the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

  3. If I do not wear my beany hat, my headphones fall out!

  4. I understand now why one sees runners spitting. Yuk. But sometimes needs must.

Think that's all of my discoveries to date. I think there will be more.

Happy running to everyone, but moreover, Happy Days Off !
Grin slightly mad grin there

midtowner · 05/02/2011 19:07

Better to have gone out by mistake, than to have missed a run Marnie! Well done! You're one step ahead of me Grin.

I'm setting off on a two and a half week trip on Wednesday. I'll be on the road for quite a bit of it, so looking forward to some new running routes.

SkipToTheEnd · 05/02/2011 20:48

Hi everyone :)

I'm starting c25k on Friday. Any tips?

I have a cheap pair of trainers and was hoping to just wear those - do you think they'll do for a couple of weeks?

What running shoes would you recommend? On a tight budget just now so any bargains around? What do you normally wear?

I have never ran before - can you tell Grin

midtowner · 06/02/2011 03:45

Welcome Skip, nice to see you join us. What sort of trainers do you have? I think cheap are OK, unless they are something like converse which don't have any support for your feet.

ratherbe well done! I'm liking the additions to the list. I've been having to wear a splint on my left arm recently as a result of my own upper body lop-sidedness, so can relate to the leg thing Smile

WheeshtWillYe · 06/02/2011 04:06

I have been avoiding this thread Blush I have to confess I've been a total slacker - just had 3 (!) weeks off due to crap weather & illness. Will get back out on Sunday so please feel free to shout at me give me a hard time if I show my face again without completing my run. Going to start back on Week 4. Should be on Week 7 by now, dammit...

YorkshireCrockpot · 06/02/2011 13:02

Well been out after a week off and I couldn't do it! Sad On week4 day 2 and had to give up half way round. Big fat failure!

Going to repeat week 3 I think. Going to go out in the evenings (getting too hard to run with the buggy now)- the husband will have to stick his no evening running 'rule'.

2 weeks behind schedule now

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2011 13:57

I don't accept that you are a failure Yorkshire!

You are still working at it, and it's not been straightforward for you. How can that be failing? You started again at too high a level that's all but you are going to do something about it.

And you really need to move away from the notion of being behind schedule. There really isn't a schedule to this, but there is a goal.

And we will get there!

midtowner · 06/02/2011 14:45

Rather is talking a lot of sense Yorkshire. The fact that we are all trying to do something we weren't doing a few weeks ago is an achievement in itself. I take my hat off again to anyone who runs with a buggy, especially one that has a child or two in it Smile
