Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

Well, from that famously lefty, remainy paper, checks notes the Express - UK trade has shrunk since Brexit while EU thrives - data...

borntobequiet · 10/12/2021 15:03

I'd be interested to see the comparison with other EU countries. That would demonstrate whether it's Covid related or not

Actually I heard on the radio this morning that it’s noticeably worse, which is why I went looking, but I didn’t find a comparison.
Might have been on the early financial report on the Today prog.

HannibalHayeski · 10/12/2021 15:15

Now I wonder what could have happened in around 2016 that might have caused this...

No trade war after all?

👀 someone in UK Govt has been briefing the European media on record that the UK Govt has dropped its ECJ red line …. Rather significant change in tone. Deal in offing?

HannibalHayeski · 10/12/2021 17:40

Well, they've already threatened one with the USA, so unless they want one with Russia, China, and India as well...

DuncinToffee · 10/12/2021 18:40

Peter Foster @pmdfoster

SO. Screeching rowback now under way on this briefing: -- UK Govt spox: "inaccurate characterisation of our position"

But @StefanieBolzen is top-notch reporter. It is properly sourced. This wasn't some random UK official

So deeply revealing, even if it's now being taken back.

When asked why further talks with the US weren't happening before 1 January, Ms Trevelyan said the US chose to have a discussion with the EU first because it was a larger trading partner.

Opal8 · 10/12/2021 21:26

The papers are obviously keeping the party photos til the weekend

THere an M.R. James story - "Count Something" where aw many padlocked coffin is transported back from Transylvania to Britain.

Everytime someone on board mentions the Counts name, a padlock falls off the coffin.

If I remember right the last lock falls as the boat docks.

I often think of that story when I see Cutnpastanova mentioned.

How many locks ?

Some G7 data

leaderpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/brexit-britain-lags-behind-in-g7-goods-trade-rankings

Britain is the only Group of Seven advanced economy to have failed to regain the level of goods exports seen in late 2018, according to official data published by each country, including British data on Friday.

...

I suspect a lot more domestic frothing over parties in the coming dats ...

DGRossetti · 11/12/2021 09:34

I wonder how easy it would be to get #BringBackCameron to trend for long enough to see the Tories implode forever ?

I still stand by my view that the one price I would accept for Brexit was the destruction of the Tories. It may yet happen.

Have we reached the stage yet where however next weeks by-election turns out, it will be despite Boris, not because Boris ?

news.sky.com/story/dominic-cummings-says-pictures-of-downing-street-parties-exist-and-will-inevitably-get-out-12491785

Wasn't our Dom also devoted to destroying the Tories ?

Peregrina · 11/12/2021 10:13

I am tempted to agree. If as a result we got a decent PR system in Parliament and reform of the House of Lords, so that politicians who are booted out by their electorate e.g. failed politicians, Nicola Blackwood and Zak Goldsmith, or those who chose not to stand, Kate Hoey and Gisela Stuart, aren't allowed anywhere near the second chamber....

Well, it would all be a start - there is so much wrong - but it could be done if you think how the War years begat a complete change of direction.

Gisela Stuart has just been appointed as the new civil service commissioner by Johnson.

borntobequiet · 11/12/2021 10:45

@DuncinToffee

Gisela Stuart has just been appointed as the new civil service commissioner by Johnson.
She’s already shown how easily manipulated she is by the Leave faction. She’ll jump to Johnson’s tune no prob.
Peregrina · 11/12/2021 11:15

I think she sits as a Crossbencher when she used to be a Labour MP. I think that tells you about her loyalties.

Gordon Rayner, Telegraph, on the Shropshire by election

Brexit mega thread part 4 : non goady thread : Christmas edition
Peregrina · 11/12/2021 12:08

I am not holding my breath for the North Shropshire by election. I think the Tories will get back in with, like the Bexley by election, something like a 4,000 majority. Which will still be something of an upset, but it will be another Brexit stooge to go to Parliament.

DuncinToffee · 11/12/2021 12:37

I agree, the majority will still vote Tory as that is what they do.

jgw1 · 11/12/2021 12:49

I still stand by my view that the one price I would accept for Brexit was the destruction of the Tories. It may yet happen.

Boris is certainly working hard to make sure that happens.
